Labour isn't working - Thread 10

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Recent polling on I.D cards looks very different to earlier polls. Strongly opposed is the highest response, strongly approve the lowest.

Thanks for that. I've been looking forward to some unbiased polling on this.
That reads to me as if there are many undecided, but suspicious.

The main point I put to my MP was where is the mandate for this? At what point did the British public say this is what they wanted?

Exactly this. This Digital ID card idea has come out of thin air. Last saturday, we knew nothing of it, within a week it's all over the news. There is something afoot I tell ya, in the back rooms of government there's a problem, this is a magic trick that Ali Bongo Starmer and his assistants are using to deflect our view from what's really going on and I have a nasty feeling it's the budget.
Just call me Sherlocketta Holmes.😁

They didn't, this has been entirely pushed from the top. There was no mandate for this, there was no call for this. Tread lightly on your lives they said, fuckers.

Quite. We need to look beyond the headlines and keep an eye on what else is going on.

Right I'm off to brave Tesco on a Saturday morning.
Have a lovely day all x

So many of our transactions in society require some form of ID or data collection, I just don’t see what another one would do - good or bad. It all seems a bit pointless, and seems to be massively confusing for both politicians and electorate as the state rationale (illegal working) is not compelling. as an immigrant I already have to show a national digital ID when starting work (my eVisa) as well as passport, so genuinely baffled by what another digital ID would accomplish

And maybe there is some sort of underlying master plan, but Labour have shown no signs of having a cogent plan for anything else, so why ascribe to malice what is just as likely incompetence. I feel like somewhere in Labour HQ there is a hat with random policy ideas and every time there’s a scandal Starmer reaches in and pulls one out.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 27/09/2025 09:55

There is doubtless a bit of moribund moggy about this. But TBH I think the greater part of the explanation is that Labour are terrified of the small boats problem and want to look tough and effective. That’s why they’re pinning it all on illegal employment.

The fact that this has obviously come out of a crappy late-night ‘strategy’ meeting and, more to the point, most people see through the nonsense, just makes it yet another Labour dud.

This will do Starmer a shit load of political damage: the lack of a mandate, lack of a decent explanation, high-handedness, general scepticism and opposition, this cannot work and will be a huge embarrassment for the government.

Yes I think it’s a big deal and not in the manifesto. He’s running scared of Reform and weirdly perhaps has lost confidence in ‘one in one out’. If that were to work he wouldn’t need to do a political hit on himself.

i can’t was for the virtue signalling guardian cashmere! Can they print one with ‘please tax me
more’ for them?

yes, it’s a slippery slope, they want ID so they can extend it. This is a stalking horse for a grab by the left for more control. I’m not sure I want a ‘modern state’ in that sense - AI surveillance?

Sorry - on a train with dodgy WiFi!

EmpressoftheMundane · 27/09/2025 12:44

I think support for digital IDs could drop further. I was mildly against it because it looked pointless. Just a few posts from you all, with consequences I gad not considered and now I see the danger. The more this is debated, the less the public will like it.

Once again Starmer is in territory where we have to decide if he is a fool or takes us for fools.

BorneBackCeaselesslyIntoThePas · 27/09/2025 13:21

I think Starmer has introduced digital ID’s as both a distraction but also when he drops the idea he can claim he’s listened to the will of the people and aren’t we a good government , yes we are, head pat, head pat

Yes I imagine the focus groups were handled in a way not to prompt a reaction.

This will build. Also that arrogance got somewhat wiped after the last petition by the local
elections. Look how they panicked after dismissing it all.

This is much more than WFA too. As the whole system change tweet below indicates.

Labour hate SMEs. They don't even try to hide it.

Yep but they really hate small business owners, maybe as much as they hate parents who send their DC to indeed schools. Both types represent aspiration

Those that can - like trades - will put more business through under the table. So no new VAT, but also a reduction in income tax (if previously taken officially as salary) or corporation tax and dividend tax (if taken as dividends).

And those that can't - but have customers who are individuals (rather than VAT registered companies) - some of their customers will choose not to buy at a 20% higher price, and so they'll lose business (ie less actual value being produced)

Chances that on balance it will actually bring in more tax revenue? I don't know. Unfortunately, I'm pretty certain that Labour don't know either. They can't be bothered to even try to figure it out.

Most trades sail over the VAT thresholds anyway, don't they? The cost of materials alone make turnover costs huge.
