Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Oh its horrible it is supposed to be "Healthy " or something 😕

I don't drink alcohol so this isn't for me but I expect this will be a love/hate product 😂

@Needmorelego yet another horrible variation on a perfectly lovely original, I swear the people who invent these things are smoking weed at the time. No other explanation 🤷🏻‍♀️

iI don’t get sushi, it always looks so cold and unappealing.

Fresh well made sushi is melt in the mouth, nothing like the stuff in the supermarket.

So my daughter who is allergic to dairy can still enjoy pizza

Yes and absolutely vegan options should exist - but not as a lazy replacement on vegetarian food. I’m not vegan and I eat cheese

Agree, and sometimes they wrap gluten free into that too, so no one is happy.

About Jaffa Cakes.....
I did like the cola bottle flavour ones.
I hope that's not too controversial 😬

Seriously?!

FeetLikeFlippers · 14/09/2025 14:49

Fake meat or I Can’t Believe It’s Not Squirrel as I call it. If you want a “plant based” diet eat some fucking vegetables.

mydogisthebest · 14/09/2025 14:50

Gravy. Obviously needed in stews and casseroles but otherwise just revolting.

I don't understand the obsession with it, especially in the north. Gravy on everything even chips! Just why? It makes food soggy. Chips, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding should all be crisp but gravy makes them soft and soggy.

I have teeth I don't need my food to resemble baby food plus I don't want everything I eat to taste of gravy

For the first time ever in my 50 years on earth I actually threw half the pack away 😂😂

I'd put all Jaffa Cakes on the list, never understood it. Low quality, bad tasting cheap things that seem to have made a deal with the devil to put a spell on everyone else!

Oh I always thought that what Bailey's was...a sort of chocolate alcohol drink 🤔

Labelledelune · 14/09/2025 15:46

Nowadays all supermarket ham if formed, so are most gammon joints. People have no idea what they are eating and most don’t even care as long as it’s cheap.

All pasta is vile.

Yucky, slimy, tasteless bits of cooked flour. Absolutely disgusting.

I've been getting some nice Italian pasta from a deli near my DP's house. It cooks so much better (and definitely needs salt in the water to stop it sticking). The instructions also basically say "cook until it's ready"

lilkitten · 14/09/2025 16:22

I don't get things like caviar, there didn't seem to be any pleasurable taste. And celery

Hey take your nushroom hate back ! 😄
Slice them thinly Fry in way to much butter with finely diced onion then hot toast dipped in the mushroom butter / juice and eaten while its still hot enough to burn your lips is my quick go to for breakfast or supper.

Mushrooms NEED to be cooked in butter, I agree. Never make the mistake of oil or they become slimy and rubbery. But butter facilitates a delicious caramelisation and I find it very hard to believe anyone could not love a butter- sauteed mushroom.

I would love if they did the vegan version again, I'm lactose intolerant but I had some before I knew and Bailey's tasted so lovely

Squeakymoo1 · 14/09/2025 17:20

Try mushrooms well cooked in either olive oil or butter with a sprinkle of celery salt with full English or just on toast.
Or if they are dry enough after frying take off the heat and stir in some Chovi brand alioli (the one in the yellow pot) and slap in a cooked part bake roll

"cramming themselves full of food" I think you might have been doing it wrong 😂

As an aside, when we were hunter gatherers we would have 'grazed' (snacked) a fair bit. There is nothing wrong with snacking. Overeating is the problem (albeit often processed, snacking foods, can be easier to overeat)

Yes, but anyone who eat till they're full or almost full at meals will overeat if the also snack. I know a few slim and even skinny people who snack, but they're always pushing their snacks on normal people who eat normal meals and just can't afford to be constantly eating.

That depends on a variety of factors. It may be true for you, but isn’t necessarily for others.

Hmmm, ok, I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make. I’m also not sure what ‘pushing snacks on people’ looks like… is it the same as offering people something that you are eating? Which would generally be considered polite?

anyway, I maintain; Overeating is bad, snaking is not inherently bad. In practice I agree lots of people who overeat also snack but that still doesn’t make snacking the problem. Overeating is the problem.
