Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Pak choi, its like warm lettuce in a stir fry,

Gall10 · 12/09/2025 11:48

Avocado…or is it advocardo? I can’t even spell it never king eat it.
It looks like…and seems to have the texture of pus from a rancid boil.

Chicken and bacon burger - mixing two meats biting into together just isn't for me!

Fois Gras/Lobster/caviar - foods all for show.

Anything with kidney, liver etc in.

Should also say gnocchi. I just don't understand it. Had it as a main course once and it was the most monotonous thing ever! I am sure there are many more.

The texture is much nicer if you fry it, as I discovered the other day. Otherwise, I agree.

Olives. Nearly everyone says they didn't like them the first time – so why carry on??

Because if you start liking them, it is worth it.

They can give you satisfactory amount of savory taste in just a few reasonably healthy pieces.

jettisoned · 12/09/2025 11:59

Cheese. It's rancid milk and sometimes, rancid milk with mould in it. And it stinks, like vomit and decay. 🤮

VenusClapTrap · 12/09/2025 12:02

Sweetener instead of sugar in drinks. Just fucking stop ruining everything.

Snacking in general. Can people really not last between meals without cramming themselves full of more food? Admit it, you eat 6 meals a day.

People just get into a habit and if they're used to it they feel hungry without it. Also work snacking, which is more of a boredom thing.

I try not to snack too.

Needmorelego · 12/09/2025 12:02

Traditional Christmas Dinner.
I could just about nibble on a roast potato if I really had too but I can't stand the rest of it.
Always makes the house all stuffy too.

AncientBallerina · 12/09/2025 12:04

Chorizo in fish fishes. Just stop! The chorizo is far too strong a flavour and overpowers the fish.

Tunacheesequesadilla · 12/09/2025 12:05

Gnocchi. Gummy potato balls. Would rather have pasta OR a potato, not a mixture of the two.

I didn't like coffee first time... now I love it! I still don't live olives though, although my kids do (incredibly, given they are 2 and 4)

Celery. Stringy green water with an unpleasant taste. Just why?? It's not food.

Agreed raw but great for cooking

godlikeAI · 12/09/2025 12:06

Dates being considered in any way a replacement for sugar in Naked/similar bars - which all tastes the same and are disgusting

murasaki · 12/09/2025 12:07

That pasta in the shape of a bow tie. Impossible to get right. If the knot in the middle isn't rock hard, the ends are too floppy.

I love snacking. I snack all day and I'm a very healthy weight. My meals are much larger so, no, I wouldn't say I eat 6 meals a day.

Coffeeishot · 12/09/2025 12:07

Molluscs are just grim i don't know how anybody enjoys them, and such hard work getting into them.

All pasta is vile.

Yucky, slimy, tasteless bits of cooked flour. Absolutely disgusting.

I love Olives and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t! 😲

Cucumber. Watery, cloying and taints every food it tastes. I hate the taste, the texture and the smell.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 12/09/2025 12:10

Pizza.

Nasty sloppy vileness on a plate.
And don't get me started on the bit round the edge. You can break your teeth on those awful hard bits, which are also tasteless.

Cinaferna · 12/09/2025 12:11

All shellfish and snails. Slimy, rubbery, stinking devilspawn.

Cronuts. I very rarely throw food away after one mouthful. The only cronut I ever bought - and it was from a good fancy bakery when I was hungry - hit the nearest dustbin. Dry, flaky, fatty, gritty - all the worst bits of a donut and a croissant rolled into one high calorie bland flavourless, oversized pastry.

I don't mind gnocchi (if in a baked dish) but it was the first thing I thought of because I agree, no-one really needed to combine the two. Plus I swear it expands in your stomach so you feel extra full if you've eaten a lot.

TearsRunDownMyThighs · 12/09/2025 12:14

hard boiled eggs.

now don't get me wrong, I love me a burford brown for dippy eggs, poached eggs etc. but there's something about eating a cold, boiled egg (white) that makes me shudder and the taste just reminds me of solidified jizz.
both, achem, white substances are a slimy white protein based mouthful and I just can't get my head around it.

I hated them. Then a friend made me lunch with olives in and out of politeness I ate them and loved them, after avoiding them for years. Same with fish. I hated fish. Just the smell made me feel sick. Then inexplicably when I first met DH and invited him for dinner I made baked rainbow trout - I chose it - no idea why - and have loved fish ever since.

I read somewhere that your tastebuds change in your late twenties as your adult brain fully matures and people often start liking things then that they hated before - usually strong flavours like olives, anchovies etc.
