Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

I also love spinach I use it instead of lettuce and cook it down as a vegetarian although I do use butter and salt so maybe not the healthiest 😀

ChippySauce · 17/09/2025 12:10

Spinach gets put in everything here!
It's such an easy green vegetable to use, as it wilts down to nothing but you know it's in there.

Well I bloody love oysters, but I think anything from McDonald's and the like is vile, oysters =pure unadulterated food, McDonald's = processed crap your body can't deal with. Also agree with the fruit in cheese yuk,

I LOVE fruit in cheese:)
Each to their own....

Halloumi = tasteless rubber. My kids love it though….

TheGander · 17/09/2025 18:04

Try frying it, it’s game changer. Add a bit of
oil to non stick pan and fry till golden. Better if you pre soak for about 1/3 hour to get rid of the excess salt.

I always used to make my own then had really good gravy at a friend's house and she told me it was bisto. Now I use bisto as a base and add wine, garlic, herbs and meat juices. It's especially good for veggie gravy. You just add some wine and herbs and it tastes very grown up - good with veggie Wellington on Christmas Day for all the veggies and vegans.

That’s what I do and a quick slug if cheap red wine and a dollop of Dijon and tastes great to me - I don’t actually like this watery jus type gravy much

@CalzoneOnLegs , I really fancy some kippers , can I borrow a candle ? 😃

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/09/2025 13:57

@DeanStockwelll
Hiya ! okay I can report on the candle, appearance lovely, in a glass holder, nice shade of green, not a lot of smell to the wax, or when burning so I’m not convinced that any scented candle would be any different. However, I have used it albeit what I’ve been cooking is not strong smelling (excpet if you think Brussels sprouts are 🤣🤣) and there actually were no cooking smells. It’s definitely less noticeable smell wise than when I’ve used a nag champa stick but they are actually a bit much ! (But do the trick when daal has been made)
so for £2.50 they are worth a try 🕯️
enjoy your kippers 🐟

Agree with marshmallows!

Also… Jaffa cakes. How to ruin a chocolate biscuit

waltercrimble · 21/09/2025 12:25

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 12:48

@minipie its in the same category as candy floss and haribo to me, just rubbish with no redeeming qualities at all

Jaffa Cakes always seem slightly stale to me.

TheChosenTwo · 22/09/2025 15:46

Ooh I bloody love a Jaffa cake.

Don’t know why I’m lying to myself, it’s never one Jaffa cake is it? 🤭

Lol nope its the whole pack !! Love them
Another one for me is marrow what the hell do you do with them ?

DeanStockwelll · 23/09/2025 13:58

@CalzoneOnLegs , that sounds ideal, I dislike strong smelling candles I think they just mask the smell but if that one isn't to strong and by some wizardry cancels out smells that's great.
The kippers were nice but I think I can still smell them 😦

CalzoneOnLegs · 23/09/2025 14:18

@DeanStockwelll have you ever had ‘bloaters’ 🤣🤣 I’ve seen pictures and I can’t say they look very appealing. Mum used to cook kippers they were in a plastic boil in the bag is that still the case? The VERY WORST thing ever was ‘fish bits’ from the fishmonger for the cats boiled up on a Saturday morning with two Siamese cats yowling their heads off until it was cooled down.it was a horrendous smell and noise! No candles in those days 😢 sadly one if my most vivid memories

CalzoneOnLegs · 23/09/2025 14:20

@Xatz63 have you tried the Polish ‘jaffa’ cakes with raspberry, cherry or apricot filling, they are nice, really dark chocolate on them, they have them in Lidl Polish week
