Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Hmmm, ok, I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make. I’m also not sure what ‘pushing snacks on people’ looks like… is it the same as offering people something that you are eating? Which would generally be considered polite?

anyway, I maintain; Overeating is bad, snaking is not inherently bad. In practice I agree lots of people who overeat also snack but that still doesn’t make snacking the problem. Overeating is the problem.

I think my point was pretty clear. If you are eating meals that fill you up, that should be enough food. If you are ALSO snacking, that means you're overeating doesn't it?

I also said I know slim and skinny people who snack a lot. They do this by either being very active or not eating much during meals.

Yes, you might think that offering people food outside of meals is polite. I find it toxic, especially in the workplace. Remember that the majority of the population is overweight.

Yes and absolutely vegan options should exist - but not as a lazy replacement on vegetarian food. I’m not vegan and I eat cheese

I totally agree. I hear 'vegetarians can eat vegan food', but omnivores can also eat vegan food and they haven't gotten rid of the meat and fish options, just the vegetarian ones.

I agree. Smell like putrid, rotting farts.
Just can't understand while people.can't live without them at Christmas.

Good Night

Just need to be cooked right. Boiled just right is good, but roasted is even better.

I cook it in tinfoil with butter and garlic and some salt. Makes it a bit crispy. Very yummy!

I just can never find it!

Trifle
Black Forest Gateau
Lamb
The slightest hint of any fat on meat
Hershey bars (apparently the vomitty taste is actually added on purpose - WHY?

Hershey's chocolate tastes like it's swimming in oil. Revolting and not chocolate.

It’s not toxic to offer people food! They have the autonomy to refuse.

What is toxic is policing the amount people eat and judging them. Other people’s bodies are not your business.

There are so many posts that hate various foods, when it seems to me that the foods have not been prepared or cooked correctly.
Okra is one (not slimy), celery (not stringy) & many more foods.

I used to avoid many things - because my DM was the world's worst cook.

What meat is that? It's grey, so could be beef, pork, turkey......

I'm not policing what anybody else eats. It's a thread about food you don't understand/like. One poster said snacking and I agreed with her. I don't prevent anyone from snacking.

"They have the autonomy to refuse"
I think you need to read up on how this works. If you were right, there'd be no overweight people.

I don't mind celery, but it definitely is stringy.

Your post was judgemental. It is not inherently wrong to snack.

You need to read up on how obesity works, there are many complex factors to consider and it’s ignorant to suggest it’s because people cannot refuse snacks!

"You need to read up on how obesity works, there are many complex factors to consider and it’s ignorant to suggest it’s because people cannot refuse snacks!"

I didn't even mention the word obesity! I also didn't say people were obese only because they snack. But I do think it doesn't help if someone if normal weight or overweight to be adding a lot of extra food if they're already eating enough at meals.

As for judgemental, the OP's question was what food you don't understand. That means we can express an opinion. There's no point calling someone judgemental because you don't agree with their opinion.

It's funny that a previous poster said that matcha tastes of 'fishy grass'.

I bought some matcha pre-holiday about a month ago. Loved it. Caught covid on holiday and since coming back, that same pack of matcha tastes fishy as hell. Suddenly can't stand the exact same stuff. Bizarro.

Plastictreees · 14/09/2025 19:59

@Gwenhwyfar What is wrong with the word obesity? This is what you are referring to - the complex health issue that is obesity. Stating that it’s ‘toxic’ to offer people food is a very strong and unusual thing to state. Your statement about there being no overweight people if they could refuse food being offered to them, is really simplistic and ignorant.

Who cares how much other people eat or if they snack or not? Other peoples bodies are not your business. This thread is a lighthearted discussion about food, not an opportunity to judge others eating habits.

Brussels should be bright green like you bought them. If they are grey, mushy, they are overcooked - that’s when they are horrible. I bet many people have only eaten overcooked sprouts.. Many years ago, in B&M, I saw tinned Brussels! Not sure which ones are the most horrible- tinned or frozen.

Also my parents said that the varieties in supermarkets now are less bitter than the ones they ate 20 plus years ago

  1. I didn't say there's anything wrong with the word obesity. There isn't. I merely said that I hadn't used it.
  2. I also never said there would be no overweight people if they refused snacks.
  3. I care. You don't need to care. I can care about whatever I want to care about.
  4. If you really want to debate with me don't misrepresent what I've written.

Yes, shouldn't be overcooked, but also not undercooked. I think boiling them is really quite delicate and roasting is easier.

Plastictreees · 14/09/2025 20:07

@Gwenhwyfar I am not going to de-rail the thread. Hopefully you will refrain from making more ignorant statements.

I love Brussels I had some tonight first time for about a year i think 🥬

Plastictreees · 14/09/2025 20:10

Brussels are the devils work… I just cannot get on board with them at all no matter how they are cooked and presented. Even the smell makes me gag!

Ok, I thought you might be making a different point that wasn’t clear to me because the point you’re making is not in opposition to mine so I was confused about why you’d responded to my comment.

We’re both saying overeating is bad. I’m mearly pointing out that snacking is not inherently bad nor does it necessarily follow that someone who shacks is overeating. If you are overeating (however you might achieve that) then it’s a problem.

If you find someone offering you a biscuit when they are having one ‘toxic’, I don’t know what to say to you. At worst it’s insensitive IF the person in question happens to know the potential biscuit recipient is trying to lose weight but ‘toxic’ is wildly hyperbolic. I’m generally pleased if someone offers me a biscuit. If I’m not hungry I say no.

Do you offer alcohol to people you know are alcoholics?

Also, a government medical expert said work cake culture is toxic. It wouldn't be if we were all healthy, but you're talking about an already unhealthy population.

The smell can be bad even if you like them, but that's true of all the brassicas I think. I like broccoli, but not the smell in my kitchen the next morning.

Agreed, it's like putting porridge on your Christmas dinner!

I love porridge 😁
Bread sauce is like some one has chewed up some bread with a mouthful of milk and spat it on your dinner.🤢

its not at all the same 😂

recovering alcoholics don’t drink AT ALL. People on diets can legitimately eat biscuits and I’ve specifically said in my post I would find it insensitive to offer a person on a diet a biscuit. That doesn’t make offering people food ‘toxic’.

I’m not talking about ‘work cake culture’’ - you might be, I’m not.

Plastictreees · 14/09/2025 20:29

Urgh, I loathe both diet culture AND cake in the office culture!
