Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Have you tried the Hot Honey Jaffa Cakes?
How to ruin a Jaffa Cake 😂😂

The Jaffa Jonuts (basically jaffa cake donuts) is also a way to ruin both donuts and jaffa cakes.

Hey take your nushroom hate back ! 😄
Slice them thinly Fry in way to much butter with finely diced onion then hot toast dipped in the mushroom butter / juice and eaten while its still hot enough to burn your lips is my quick go to for breakfast or supper.

Nooooo! You read it wrong, we all love mushrooms, it was my sister's DH who doesn't like them, hence him saying to her
"You know how I feel about mushrooms" with a look of disgust 🤭

So now, being us, we just throw the phrase around.
It's even better when used out of context, we just end up laughing our heads off 😂

@oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends but okay if I have one all to myself 🐷

Have you tried the cheese melty things that Aldi sell ?
Small bowls of mixed cheese that you put in the oven the dip what ever you fancy in them . Imo perfectly sized for one person.

iI don’t get sushi, it always looks so cold and unappealing.

CalzoneOnLegs · 14/09/2025 10:44

@DeanStockwelll i think so, is one manchego and chorizo ? and another that is non meat.
Its that time of year now when the terracotta oven cheeses will be available (the only good thing about Christmas along with twiglets in tubs)
also I think I have seen a fondue thing in Lidl Alpine Week.

thank you

ETA I like Aldis version of dairylea dunkers breadsticks, (nicer than dairylea)

They are easier to chew than live ones.

Oh my we need the laughing emoji back 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Meekly taps you on the shoulder and apologies 😳.

DeanStockwelll · 14/09/2025 11:03

@CalzoneOnLegs , yes that's the ones , although last time I went to buy them they were in much shallower plastic bowls , which is a real shame because the terracotta ones are great to reuse for melting your own cheese, dips , snacks or even small pet food bowls.

I haven't tried aldis dairylea but I will do , thanks.

@PassportPhotosAreHorrific

I’m too old school to buy any of those gimmicky flavour changes they’re always dreadful

No need for apologies, just plate me up a dish of your finest mushrooms on toast please! 👌

On Shrove Tuesday, the pancakes that many make are awful. It’s just slime. Adding lemon and sugar makes it more slimy. Bought some ready made ones and still not good

Yet no issues with crepes, American pancakes

@DiscoBobreheated pasta becomes resistant starch, doesn’t spike blood sugar so I have no problem with that.
whelks - yes absolutely with you, rubber with a fishy whiff.
margarine is not a by product of petrochemical industry! It’s made from chemically processed seed oils.

Properjob · 14/09/2025 11:45

Most pasta tbh but especially 'pasta salad'. The two words are mutually incompatible and it's a slimy mess. I get the rage when every bloody 'salad' in the lunch section contains pasta. Yuk.
And tripe, 'sweetbreads'. Just why 🤢

Properjob · 14/09/2025 11:48

And Sriracha. Go ahead, ruin your food and taste buds...

CharlesPetrescu · 14/09/2025 11:48

Dragonfruit. They look gorgeous but have no flavour.

Liver. I know it's nutritious - but it tastes vile! 🤮

Needmorelego · 14/09/2025 11:59

About Jaffa Cakes.....
I did like the cola bottle flavour ones.
I hope that's not too controversial 😬

I don't understand Matcha it just really isnt that nice and im positive people just say they love it to appear "cool" 😀

I thought this was a typo until I googled it. It looks disgusting! Yorkshire tea for me and nothing else 😀

My visceral emotive description of margarine was tongue in cheek. I was just demonstrating my hatred. I do know it's not made of petrol. It just tastes like it. And has the texture of it.

I heard that about reheated pasta but it's just too soggy. I like my pasta practically raw!

Glad you're on the same page re whelks. I reckon if you stewed them for ages in a tomato sauce or something, like Greek octopus stew, they might be tolerable and softer? But they never seem to be served that way.

JohnBullshit · 14/09/2025 12:04

Mildly curious about the hot honey craze. By 'hot', do they mean heated, or spicy, or both? I'm not a big fan of honey so it's not something I'd ever actively choose, but it'd be good to know what to expect when it inevitably turns up on my plate. Sweet things in or on savoury food are far, far worse than fruit with chocolate, which can be delicious if done well, though absolutely dire if not.

DeanStockwelll · 14/09/2025 12:06

@ChippySauce > 🍄🧅🍞 is the best I can do right now but w ill send you some next time I make it 😀

Hot honey is honey infused with chilis and other hot spices. You can get sweet hot honey which is mainly cinnamon for pancakes.

I don't like honey but like hot honey

ChippySauce · 14/09/2025 12:40

Thanks @DeanStockwelll that's me sorted for lunch! 😄

Jellied eels. I mean, what the actual fuck is that all about.

I also have a memory of sitting beside my uncle on the seafront at Scarborough while he was eating whelks with a pin. It was the most shocking thing I think I'd seen in my then 6 years of life and it's stuck with me forevermore.
