Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Polenta. Like a shite mashed potato.

Oh and fruit with chocolate. What a waste of both. Never, and I mean never, put fruit with chocolate.

fyi - bananas are not, for this purpose, considered fruit.

What about a chocolate dipped strawberry?

Everyone has already agreed that strawberries and chocolate are an abomination.

Polenta. Like a shite mashed potato.

That's polenta cooked horribly. Polenta cooked with garlic and smoky paprika then cooled, cut into chip-sized slices, tossed in dried polenta with a bit of salt and some more garlic granules and paprika, then bakes until crispy in the oven is delicious. The yellow wallpaper paste version is disgusting.

Oh sorry I missed that. I love them!

Bread sauce is wonderful, but must be home made. Not out of a packet or even chilled supermarket stuff. Please try it - it's delicious!

It’s not 🤢

Greysowhat · 13/09/2025 16:06

Tripe!

....that is all

I find this very strange - I eat asparagus most days as it is so good for you - and don't find urine any different from usual.

Not the same for everyone, think its an enzyme causing it. Its good for your kidneys!👍

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/09/2025 16:47

@wavingfuriously i like it, I’ve only ever had the packet one ! I was In sainsburys and a shopper asked me where it was turned out she was buying 20 packets to take to her daughter in Spain.

It's revolting stuff!

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 13/09/2025 17:11

I've never eaten it ,it smells and looks awful

Turning cauliflower into various forms, wings, cous cous, steak. No thank you. Also beetroot randomly appearing on every menu. I like it but it just seems to be everywhere at the moment.

I love cauliflower but cauliflower pizza (where they make the base out of cauliflower) is truly truly revolting, and I’ll eat anything!

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/09/2025 17:21

@JPMJuliz I didn’t even know that existed 🤮 it’s like cauliflower rice and that courgette ‘spaghetti’ ABSOUTLEY awful
my sister is a good one for this, always swapping out Ingredients In recipes to make them ‘healthier’ they definitely make you eat less becuase they are always disgusting like using zero fat cottage cheese as a lasagne topping 🤮🤮🤮

Agreed! Cauliflower rice 🤢
courgettes slices grilled with reasoning and a bit of garlic is fantastic, I do not understand courgette spaghetti 🙈

Crikeyalmighty · 13/09/2025 17:27

Oh I actually quite like cauliflower rice- especially as I’m dieting , but it’s best if it can be covered with something tasty and ‘mixed in’ like curry

LittleBitofBread · 13/09/2025 17:35

viques · 12/09/2025 19:46

Mould is mould! There is a reason we don’t eat blue food, it is a sign that something has gone very wrong.

blueberries exception, there is always one!

So why don’t people die from eating blue cheese then?

DiscoBob · 13/09/2025 17:38

ChocolateCinderToffee · 12/09/2025 14:30

Oysters on the shell are alive when you eat them.
I'm out.

I know that is kind of gross when you think about it. How about cooked ones? I haven't tried that but I like the smoked ones from a tin.

Well yes covering up the taste with a nice curry ! Ditto cheese sauce !

I didn’t think legitimate rice was a bad food though, is it the carbs ?

LittleBitofBread · 13/09/2025 17:40

centaury · 12/09/2025 23:13

Profiteroles. Not horrible, but I do not understand their status as a beloved dessert. I would pick almost anything else.

They always seem slightly stale to me.
Having said that, I wouldn’t turn one down. And I love a chocolate eclair , which are basically the same but a different shape.
