Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

That's so true about breaded ham, why?!

For me - mint chocolate chip. Noo. These are two separate flavours. To be fair, in adulthood I probably wouldn't find it so offensive but as a child no. Memories of those awful after dinner mint square things.

It needs to be cooked till the slimyness disappears, takes a little time. Then you will be left with non-sticky, individually separated pieces. And after that if you increase the heat on the stove, they get very crispy too. Though no water should be added at any point. I always cover the pan with a lid, so steam does its work. But okra has to be cooked only with oil.

This has removed my desire to explore okra.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 13/09/2025 10:52

I’m going to have another go at cooking okra following FieryA’s instructions.

I thought it was the other way round and overcooking
causes the slime to be released (so including in slow cooking curries and stews) whereas slicing thinly and a quick stir fry on a high heat (with ginger, garlic and onion), zero slime and not bad tasting at all!

Okra typically cannot be quickly cooked as, while it is non slimy, it is essentially raw. Once properly cooked, it can be made crispy. I also use onion and garlic as a base. You can also add chopped potato to increase the quantity and add more flavour, as okra shrinks considerably.

Sweeteners.

If you want something sweet put sugar in it. Or learn to eat/drink something that is sour.

Don't give me "it's good for dieting" crap. It's not. Nor is it good for those that are pre/diabetic. It just fools them into wanting to eat more sweet stuff. And the so called sugar tax has meant that those of us who choose to consume sugar have had this option taken away. I used to love cranberry or cherry juice - can't now as it always has sweetener in it as do the vast majority of squash. I know of about 2 brands I can buy if I can find some store stocking them which is really difficult.

SmudgeButt · 13/09/2025 11:37

Oh and fruit with chocolate. What a waste of both. Never, and I mean never, put fruit with chocolate.

fyi - bananas are not, for this purpose, considered fruit.

I hate Oreos I can remember when they first arrived in the UK my dd was obsessed and they just taste of nothingness!

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 13/09/2025 11:58

Food that looks like other food.

Those "is it cake" videos make me feel sick to my stomach.

It's even worse when it's food that looks like something completely inedible like a shoe, door handle or a baby.

A friend had a baby shower cake that looked like a baby's back end in a nappy, and little feet and it took all my might to stop my face from having subtitles.

Yes ! Agree with that.
My daughter loves them. They taste stale to me.
I'd rather eat a Rich Tea than a frigging Oreo 😂

I had a beef and oyster pie a few years ago somewhere very fancy. It was actually amazing! I doubt I would be able to recreate it though.

That sounds delicious but I wouldn't attempt to make it either!

Rosemary61 · 13/09/2025 12:32

Also, raw onions 🤮

I like a lot of the foods mentioned on this thread but my controversial pet hate is.....custard. Please keep that sweet slimy stuff well away from my pies and crumbles and above all don't contaminate my Christmas Pud with it.

I occasionally like a bit of custard, @MrsGusset, but you are 100% correct about custard on Christmas pudding - it is an anathema. Christmas pudding should be eaten with rum butter or brandy butter - nothing else.

The lack of flavour and it just being texture confuses my brain,

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/09/2025 12:43

I agree. Oreos look like they should be rich and chocolate-y, but taste of nothing. A total waste of calories.

murasaki · 12/09/2025 11:43

Snacking in general. Can people really not last between meals without cramming themselves full of more food? Admit it, you eat 6 meals a day.

I definitely eat 4-6 meals a day and have no problem admitting it 😂

Waitingfordoggo · 13/09/2025 12:47

Puddings with booze in. Yuck. Bloody love puddings and I quite like alcohol in small quantities, but putting the two together doesn’t work for me.

Although I did see some baileys frozen chocolate eclairs yesterday 🐷

Mokel · 13/09/2025 12:55

Commercial brandy sauce. Tastes fake. Custard is not a thing to pour over Christmas pudding

And they are added to so many other products, as if they improve them

Also, raw onions 🤮

I went off onions in pregnancy and I’m still averse now. Which is so annoying as they are in everything! I’m hoping my aversion will pass at some point…

On MN snacking is sacrilege and everyone eats 1 small salad a day… apparently 😆

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/09/2025 15:04

Absolutely right, @VenusClapTrap! I’d loathe the taste of pretty much every sweetener that isn’t sugar, and so many drinks have been made ‘healthier’ by taking out sugar and adding these sweeteners. I have an inflammatory bowel condition, and I dare not use sweeteners in case they set off a flare up of my illness, but all too often, menus don’t make it clear that the drinks contain sweeteners. I’m sick of being caught out by drinks that used to be delicious - and safe for me - that are now all artificial sweetness. Gah.

Only original coke has no sweeteners now 🫤

Is that the thick sterilised cream? Blue and white label? Yes, fantastic with tinned fruit.

I think it was called Ideal milk

Most frozen veg. Once cooked it’s very watery and texture is unpleasant. The only frozen veg are fine are peas, carrots and broad beans. I believe it’s the water content in the veg that is reason.

Brussel sprouts freeze/cook from frozen pretty ok too imo. Some of the worst are broccoli and cauliflower, they go all mushy 😖
