Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

That's so true about breaded ham, why?!

For me - mint chocolate chip. Noo. These are two separate flavours. To be fair, in adulthood I probably wouldn't find it so offensive but as a child no. Memories of those awful after dinner mint square things.

mint and chocolate is a match made in heaven IMO

I think the original Percy Pigs have changed.
I used to like them but not anymore.

You need to try Henry Hippos from Lidl!

My contribution to the thread - avocado in a fry up. Wrong for so many reasons.

Excellentvintage · 13/09/2025 17:53

Afternoon tea or rather the cost of it I suppose. If you break it down it's so expensive!

They always seem slightly stale to me.
Having said that, I wouldn’t turn one down. And I love a chocolate eclair , which are basically the same but a different shape.

I ate so many when I was an apprentice chef ,the choux pastry balls were bought in ,I had to pipe in the cream and pipe on the chocolate.
Two to the tray
One to me😋😋

So why don’t people die from eating blue cheese then?

I dont know. One of life's unexplained mysteries.

If the okra is slimy, it means it has not been cooked enough.

I agree I hated everyones okra it was slimy. The day I cooked my own I changed my mind it wasn't slimy.

@JPMJuliz I didn’t even know that existed 🤮 it’s like cauliflower rice and that courgette ‘spaghetti’ ABSOUTLEY awful
my sister is a good one for this, always swapping out Ingredients In recipes to make them ‘healthier’ they definitely make you eat less becuase they are always disgusting like using zero fat cottage cheese as a lasagne topping 🤮🤮🤮

I bought some courgette spaghetti out of curiosity. It was so disappointing

I don't understand fake / vegetarian "meat". I'm looking at decreasing my meat consumption but don't want to go down the fake meat toute. If I want meat I'll have the real thing

Agree about the fake vegetarian/meat - if you're gonna be a vegetarian then be one!!

Meat
Fish
Seafood
Fennel
Jerusalem artichokes
Durian fruit

Jerusalem artichokes are horrible, the worst vegetable I have ever encountered. Impossible to peel, taste horrible and they give me wind too. I get a veg box and I am sure the only way growers can get rid of them is to sneak them into one!

I sometimes spiralise a courgette & add it to spaghetti <1min before it's cooked.
Good, as a lot of pasta dishes lack green veg.

Olives. Nearly everyone says they didn't like them the first time – so why carry on??

I agree, but if you try the really expensive stuffed ones they are delicious.

So you don't actually like them unless the flavour is disguised or overwhelmed with something else?

murasaki · 13/09/2025 18:29

I'm going to posit a new theory. Foods you don't understand in general, but work in one specific context.

Example, radishes. Not for me. But they were in a gousto recipe with cucumber ribbons and a dressing of lime juice, sugar and olive oil. Gorgeous to cut through the spicy main dish. But it's the only place I'll use them. That salad gets done a fair bit.

Otherwise, no chance.

It's the combination. But I would eat them in salad if pressed.

Well I love chocolate dipped strawberries and orange chocolate 😆

So do I!

I prefer dipped fruit to chocolate with a fruit flavour added, and I like something like a raspberry coulis with a chocolate marquise. But chocolate orange sticks or dipped strawberries are delicious!

JohnBullshit · 13/09/2025 18:32

Don't mind courgetti or cauliflower rice at all. Unfortunately they don't really work for me as carb substitutes, because I'm raiding the cupboards a couple of hours later.
Another thing that's not actively unpleasant, but I don't understand, and that's the fashion for decorating desserts like cheesecake or fancy brownies with biscuits. Whole biscuits. Often quite shit biscuits, like the aforementioned Oreos. Someone's made a nice treat, then plopped something really boring on top, sometimes a whole bunch of them in a pretty pattern. Why?

That sounds okay, when I had it was like a bowl of slime, as it had been boiled 🤮 another one of my sisters epicurean delights !

Sounds like an ex-friend who once served boiled aubergines sprinkled with curry powder !

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/09/2025 18:49

@Rainbow1901 @TigerRag

i have been meat free 42 years and I do know what you mean, up to a point, the fake meat burgers have their place for people that actually miss the texture, or for people doing a meat free meal, personally I don’t like them, but I do like a quorn sausage with a cooked breakfast, it ‘completes’ the breakfast. Also in some pubs the fake burger is the only thing on the menu, they tend to repeat on me and have that smoky flavour which I hate. I make cottage pies and Dahl, I much prefer lentils as more natural substitute than soya mince.
sainsburys do a nice chilled burger not pretending to be meat and it holds its shape and is full of nice things, I think it’s grain based. Very nice when you want a bun with a burger and salad and cheese.

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/09/2025 18:52

@oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends mouthwatering (in the pre-vomit way)

Bless her, my sister, she says something like I’m making cream of leek and potato soup but with skimmed milk, and no potatoes, as if a few spoons of single cream would make any difference except leaving it out makes the soup inedible. I just smile and nod and feel glad I don’t have to eat it

restingbitchface30 · 13/09/2025 18:54

Hot dogs. Tbh I wouldn’t even class them as food. The taste, the texture 🤮 they are vile

Ooh, good shout, must dust off the fondue set I got off freecycle and haven't used for a couple of years. Cheesy goodness.
