DS just bum shuffled and I could cry

I desperately don’t want him to be a bum shuffler but I knew it was likely to be on the cards because he has always hated tummy time and was pretty late to roll.

Bum shuffling is linked to all sorts of developmental delay, dyspraxia, dyslexia etc. I’ve just read a study that stated half of bum shufflers went on to be diagnosed with ASD.

I just feel very sad that I can see a tricky future mapped out for him. I will forever ask myself if we could have done more to encourage tummy time but in the early days he just screamed and screamed and in the later days he was just not fussed about it and would roll onto his back.

Crawling is so important for developing visual acuity, handwriting, visual spatial skills etc. I am just absolutely heartbroken for him.

DH bless him doesn’t have a clue about the implications and is sitting there cheering him and proudly videoing it 😔 I’ve had to come out of the room I just feel sick and so gutted.

In the nicest way this is nonsense. I’m a bum shuffler, both DC bum shuffled. They’re both very capable children in an academically selective school. Sporty, arty, one on an academic scholarship. Bum shuffling is very common.

PlanetOtter · 07/09/2025 20:26

I’m sorry, but this is ridiculous.

Lots of kids bumshuffle. It sounds like you’ve written him off when he’s tiny.

AllrightNowBaby · 07/09/2025 20:26

Seriously! I would not be worrying at all at this point.

Tummy time likely wouldn't have helped. You get the dc you get, quirks and all.
Ngl I bum shuffled and I'm autistic and dyspraxic but I love my life and I think overall the world is better for me being in it. I don't think i gave my parents any more bother than nt children would have.
You're right to frame it as an indicator of potential difference - is your dh usually a bit more laid back?

Birthoptionss · 07/09/2025 20:27

I’m terribly confused. I’m guessing he is very little? My nephew bum shuffled and barely ever crawled-he literally went from bum shuffling to walking. No diagnosis of asd…

Kindly, you sound a bit bonkers and this mentality is incredibly unhealthy.

I would really try not to worry OP- lots of babies bum shuffle then crawl, some babies do neither and just start walking, try not to stress until you know there is something to stress about x

Chobby · 07/09/2025 20:28

My eldest was a bum shuffler. No signs of ASD (she’s a teen now). My youngest was the only one who crawled properly and he is as autistic as they come!

Chocolatepavlova · 07/09/2025 20:28

In the kindest way possible, get a grip. My two were both bum shufflers and are completely fine, no issues. I know several others who also bum shuffled and had no issues.

stargirl1701 · 07/09/2025 20:28

I had the same worries, OP. I modelling crawling so stopped walking at the point. It seemed to work. She did crawl rather than bum shuffle.

She is autistic.

Zzxxyyzz · 07/09/2025 20:28

I haven’t written him off, that’s an awful thing to say. He’s my absolute joy.

I can’t deny the academic research findings.

Don't be ridiculous. Do you usually catastrophise? My bum shuffler is now a strapping 14 year old, top set in all classes, super sporty, intelligent and well adjusted. He didn't walk until he was 19 months either. All will be well.

Youknowwhatright · 07/09/2025 20:29

3 kids, two crawlers, one bum shuffler. The autistic (and dyspraxic) one was one of the crawlers. Bum shuffler is NT as far as I can see and shuffled for 6 months before starting crawling. Calm down.

Pianoaholic · 07/09/2025 20:29

My DD hated tummy time, never crawled but bum shuffled instead. She didn't walk until 18 months, which is usual for bum shufflers.
I remember worrying that she was late to walk. I had no idea that bum shufflers could have so many issues ahead of them!
,My DD was absolutely fine. She is now 19, having passed 9 GCSEs, 3 A levels and starting 2nd year of a degree!
So try not to worry.

IndieRocknRoll · 07/09/2025 20:30

Right, firstly step away from Google. You have taken some crazy leaps here!
How old is your DS? Have you raised your concerns with your GP/health visitor?
My DS was a bum shuffler and was eventually diagnosed with joint hypermobility.

blondebombsite13 · 07/09/2025 20:30

Get it in perspective.

I read the title and thought you were crying with happiness. Thought maybe your son had physical difficulties and had managed to bum shuffle and was ready to say a huge congratulations.

Think you need to take a step back.

TimetoGetUpNow · 07/09/2025 20:30

What flooring do you have in your main living area?

DramaLlamacchiato · 07/09/2025 20:31

Based on him just starting bum shuffling, this is a complete overreaction. There’s no reason he’s not going to crawl, pull up to stand, and walk as normal. And even if he does have ASD that’s not the end of the world either.

Overthebow · 07/09/2025 20:31

This sounds a bit ridiculous. I have friends who had bum shufflers and they are all NT. I crawled, I have ASD and ADHD.

Irgyburgy · 07/09/2025 20:31

Is this a troll post? So ridiculous to be upset by something that is perfectly acceptable variant of typical development. Also, bum shuffling doesn’t cause autism - if your kids is autistic it would be due to neurodivergence (differences in their brain) from birth, not because you do don’t do tummy time. 🙄Also bum shuffling is not a diagnostic feature of autism so you are somewhat jumping the gun.

WhereIsMyLight · 07/09/2025 20:32

just read a study that stated half of bum shufflers went on to be diagnosed with ASD.

So the other half aren’t bum shufflers? So it’s 50/50 whether bum shuffling has any impact on ASD? The exact same chances as flipping a coin.

There is more than one factor in if your son has ASD, with a large body of research pointing to the fact that genetics is a leading cause.

vodkaredbullgirl · 07/09/2025 20:32

I was a bum shuffler, I'm fine.

Cinaferna · 07/09/2025 20:33

DS2 never learned to crawl. He has ASD and is slightly dyspraxic (rubbish at team sports) But he has a First from a world-renowned uni, is a brilliant, in demand musician, has a job he loves, loads of friends, a loving partner. Honestly, even if it is a sign of developmental delay and SEN that doesn't mean less of a life. It may (probably does) mean a lot more effort on your part as a parent to ensure he meets milestones at some point, and learns key skills that he might struggle with and are effortless for others. But it's all learnable. Just may take more time.

Yes - my youngest is autistic and of the million questions we were asked about him, there were zero about whether he bum shuffled ((he didn’t)

TimetoGetUpNow · 07/09/2025 20:30

What flooring do you have in your main living area?

Carpet, but we put down a cotton play mat. It was freezing on the floor over the winter which was another reason we didn’t put him down much.

He’s just turned one, for those who asked.
