DS just bum shuffled and I could cry

I desperately don’t want him to be a bum shuffler but I knew it was likely to be on the cards because he has always hated tummy time and was pretty late to roll.

Bum shuffling is linked to all sorts of developmental delay, dyspraxia, dyslexia etc. I’ve just read a study that stated half of bum shufflers went on to be diagnosed with ASD.

I just feel very sad that I can see a tricky future mapped out for him. I will forever ask myself if we could have done more to encourage tummy time but in the early days he just screamed and screamed and in the later days he was just not fussed about it and would roll onto his back.

Crawling is so important for developing visual acuity, handwriting, visual spatial skills etc. I am just absolutely heartbroken for him.

DH bless him doesn’t have a clue about the implications and is sitting there cheering him and proudly videoing it 😔 I’ve had to come out of the room I just feel sick and so gutted.

Kindly, you are going to find the next 18 years of parenthood very difficult if you continue to catastrophise every non issue.

Coldnightsapproachingwhereismyduvet · 07/09/2025 20:35

A load of tosh..
You need to read material better for your mh..
And enjoy your dc.

Zzxxyyzz · 07/09/2025 20:35

I know bum shuffling doesn’t directly cause a diagnosable issue. I know that it is (or can be) frequently a symptom of one. It can cause problems with vision and coordination due to the pathways between both sides of the brain not forming due to a lack of crawling.

On some developmental histories, the question of bum shuffling is there.

Good lord! Stop reading stuff!
My DD never crawled. In fact neither of them really did much. One bumshuffled. Both are doing very well as teenagers. One very sporty the other an excellent dancer. Both doing very well academically..
Please get a grip. Celebrate this little milestone with your baby. He can now move around independently! How exciting!

In the nicest way this is nonsense. I’m a bum shuffler, both DC bum shuffled. They’re both very capable children in an academically selective school. Sporty, arty, one on an academic scholarship. Bum shuffling is very common.

Anecdotes like this do nothing to disprove OPs contention that half of bum-shufflers get diagnosed with autism or that it is linked to developmental delay. I haven’t seen studies showing this, but no one is saying ALL bum-shufflers have this which would need to be the case if only three examples were sufficient to disprove it.

OP whether your child is eventually diagnosed with autism or dyslexia or not, their future is definitely not mapped out for them.

Pricelessadvice · 07/09/2025 20:37

I was a bum shuffler. I do have Asperger’s but I’m well educated with two degrees, have a successful business, lots of friends and a very good life.

Do I believe my bum shuffling was any way related to my Asperger’s? No!

I walked and could talk in sentences at 9 months. I have an IQ of 140. Maybe bum shuffling made me smarter! 😅

orangetree81 · 07/09/2025 20:37

Mine went from bum shuffling straight to pulling up and walking. He liked to roll as well. Crawling was too much like hard work. He’s now a healthy, happy NT 11 year old. Kindly, it’s very easy to attach huge importance to these things with our kids, especially when they are babies still. I’ve done it myself with different things and I remember the stress and upset well. I really wouldn’t worry too much about this.

I haven’t written him off, that’s an awful thing to say. He’s my absolute joy.

I can’t deny the academic research findings.

I've got three autistic children, OP.
None of them bumshuffled.
So I wouldn't write your child off quite yet.

WhereIsMyLight · 07/09/2025 20:32

just read a study that stated half of bum shufflers went on to be diagnosed with ASD.

So the other half aren’t bum shufflers? So it’s 50/50 whether bum shuffling has any impact on ASD? The exact same chances as flipping a coin.

There is more than one factor in if your son has ASD, with a large body of research pointing to the fact that genetics is a leading cause.

Well, no. Half of all crawlers are not diagnosed with ASD, but half (it was 42% actually, I just checked) of bum crawlers were.

WearyAuldWumman · 07/09/2025 20:38

I never crawled, according to my mother. According to Mum, I used to wait for things to come to me and went straight to walking.

FWIW, I do have a diagnosis of OCD and ASD runs in my family. I'm told that I am probably on the spectrum with a bit of ADHD...but I'm now 65 and there's no point of a diagnosis.

I have an honours degree from a good uni, and a PGDE. I was a faculty head in a Scottish secondary school, married...

As others have said, it's unlikely your DS is neurodivergent...but even if he is, it's really not the end of the world.

My daughter bum shuffled and is absolutely hitting the mark at everything. She’s bright, capable, independent, funny, and at 14 (while a little teenage) is very astute and capable.

NHSworker2025 · 07/09/2025 20:38

One of mine bum shuffled and one crawled. Both have ASD. But the one that bum shuffled is bright, capable and recently moved out of the home to live miles away. There is no mapping of a child at this point, no one can tell you how well they will do. Don’t cry, just enjoy your baby and step away from Google!

MargaretThursday · 07/09/2025 20:38

I thought the research was that there was a correlation between those who don't crawl and those who have dyspraxia and/or dyslexia.
I don't think bum-shufflers are a large part of those; more often it's those who go straight to walking.

But even if it was, it's a loose correlation, so it very slightly makes it more likely, certainly not even 50/50 likelihood.

My dc with ASD was a very keen crawler, who crawled at 7 months. He liked to crawl so he could push a car along and watch the wheels go round.

soupyspoon · 07/09/2025 20:38

Wow, you've written him off quick!!

I was a bum shuffler and wouldnt walk until I was 2, preferring the bum shuffle

I have 2 degrees and am a professional.

Zzxxyyzz · 07/09/2025 20:40

Awful posts saying I have written him off. In no way is that the case. I am worried and afraid for his future and what it holds, because I love him so very much. That is the very opposite of writing someone off.

soupyspoon · 07/09/2025 20:40

And Ive just remembered my sibling who was not a bum shuffler has a diagnosis of Aspergers. She has no degrees but a very good job and is far more intelligent than me.

Rusalina · 07/09/2025 20:41

From one bonkers mum to another - you’re being ridiculous. I promise! ❤️ If your child ends up with autism or something else, it is not going to be caused by a lack of tummy time.

Icanflyhigh · 07/09/2025 20:41

What complete and utter bullshit!

All 3 of our DCs were bum shufflers.

None of them went on to be diagnosed with any ASD or developmental delays at all.

christmascalypso · 07/09/2025 20:43

There is no strong evidence at all as far as I know that links bum shuffling in babies to later autism diagnoses . What research papers have you been looking at?

Myhairissopoofy · 07/09/2025 20:43

One of my DC bum shuffled and didn’t crawl, at all.

One crawled.

The bum shuffler is NT. Crawler is ND.

Both are very bright and high achieving.

Do I sense some anxiety/OCD/health anxiety, OP?

Worried about what the future holds. Because he bum shuffles? Are you serious?

Wherehasthecatgone · 07/09/2025 20:45

I know a good number of children with ASD, or other developmental issues or significant childhood illnesses, and one thing they all have in common is other people dismissed their parents’ concerns. Sometimes causing significant delays in support.

OP don’t let anyone put you off if you are concerned about your child. Trust your instinct and always seek advice/get support when you are concerned.

Are there any other signs that are causing you concern, or just the bum shuffling?

Neemie · 07/09/2025 20:46

If your child is autistic, they are autistic. The bum shuffling doesn’t cause it so you don’t have to worry about encouraging tummy time.

Remingtonsteele · 07/09/2025 20:46

You really need to go and get help for your anxiety. I’ve got asd and adhd. I never bum shuffled or crawled. Of my kids, the one who crawled also has asd and adhd.
