Pretty much every week there's a fresh story in the Chronicle about some numpty who ignored the tide times needing rescuing. Unless they literally break down in the middle of the causeway while it's still dry it should invalidate their insurance.

One to add to the weekend vibe

cats rise up against their human captors in (checks notes) somewhere off Brittany

Mine remains its natural silver because I vowed never to dye it again when I stopped 30 years ago.

It’s been a momentous day in this house. My Telegraph reader of 50 years bloke is considering cancelling his subscription because it’s pushing Reform so hard.

That is momentous!

BIWI · 06/09/2025 21:29

Have been away for the last couple of days. I’m sad and angry about Angela Rayner, and I think she will be greatly missed.

Anyway, as per thread title, here’s the corn moon from Seaford, where we were yesterday.

Good evening all. I heard some of the speech from Farage on my way to the cattery. You could tell from the strangulated pitch that he was lying. Tolkien and little Tennyson kicked up a terrible racket on the journey home. They're very pleased to be back.

I think what you meant to say was that you could tell he was lying...because he was speaking.

What the Shock

The Reform party conference has been told that Covid vaccines are the probable cause of cancer for the King and the Princess of Wales

The party chose to platform Dr Aseem Malhotra, a prominent ally of RFK Jr in their dangerous maverick campaigns against vaccines

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/09/06/politics-latest-news-reform-uk-lucy-connolly-farage-tice/

I mean wtaf indeed. The exclusions for health insurance must be growing by the minute in the USA. Heaven help us all IF Reform are ever in Government.

I've been to Lindisfarne @Cheguevarahamster and loved Gertrude Jekyll's walled garden. Stunning place.

All hairstyles are lovely 🌹

There's a quite bizarre new piece of mis/disinformation circulating on MN atm ie that Thatcher came from a working class background which you may or may not have seen

I've only seen it in the last 24 hours

Does anyone know what it's about? is it elsewhere eg FB/Twitter? what's the motivation if deliberately mis-leading? just whyyy?

It's not really important and hope that me saying this doesn't bring [hostile] visitors to the thread

But it is fascinating - like seeing a myth being born in real-time

Frog doesn’t handle pushback well at all - he gets very clearly arsy - only has his ‘bonhomie man of the people’ voice when he’s allowed to spew his shite unchallenged. IF people challenged him more maybe he’d lose some of his appeal - but he seems to be the favoured saviour of U.K. mankind by many including MSM - for some reason completely unfathomable to me. I sometimes wish I could ‘get’ it so I could handle debate around his lies better!

MN is full of extremely wealthy, privileged people. By their definition, she was working class.

I'm a teacher and was told I am working class on HE once (in the context of someone telling me teachers don't need degrees , are all a bit dim , and students couldn't possibly actually aspire to a working class degree...)

I'd describe her background as 'ordinary' and she was always a 'grocer's daughter' when people wanted to talk about the beloved meritocracy. Boy, did she try and hide her origins (unlike poor old Keir who is trapped in perpetuity in the 'my father was a toolmaker' line).

Thank you
I hear what you say about MN - and there are so many wind-up merchants tooAngry the scorn for teachers [public sector workers generally] in some - plus the blurring/ changing of socio-economic boundaries in recent decades 'we're all middle class now' bouncers are crowd control managers etc etc is so different to the era of Thatchers childhood

But from what I know of early 20th century social history and listening to my parents generation who were born in the same decade as Thatcher - class boundaries were much clearer/explicit then and you knew your place in the hierarchy. Plus owning assets [a shop] and employing other workers [shop assistants] were clear markers of not being working class

I started my working life the summer she was elected - so also remember the 'grocers daughter' schtick! And it's true she wasn't an old- Etonian or the heir to the Fortnum & Mason fortune

Perhaps I'm taking it all too seriously Smile

Piggywaspushed · 07/09/2025 08:21

The key is Thatcher thought of herself as middle class. Her father was an alderman and pillar of the community. She despised most of the working class. let's face it.

Yes she did on both counts

BIossomtoes · 07/09/2025 08:50

It’s interesting how this myth about Thatcher has suddenly made an appearance. Anyone more middle class you’d never find. She’d have conniptions if she heard it.

I don't think it's advisable for Starmer to try and promote Shabana Mahmoud as deputy leader. He shouldn't interfere.

I haven't actually seen this so I must be on the wrong/right threads. Delete as applicable!

Very inadvisable indeed. Given the demands of her new job it would be a good idea not to burden her with any more responsibility. I see Meg Hillier is in the running. She’d be excellent.

cardibach · 07/09/2025 09:47

As I predicted, this sort of bollocks has started about Mahmood. The replies are a mix, but lots of ‘she’ll open the border/she’ll have cruise ships coming over/she’ll set up sharia law’ going on. It’s sad and frightening.

It's horrible Cardi, I have seen posts on X saying the same, I shared the Ant Middleton ones on the previous thread.

The 13 Sep thread is more heartening, many people calling the racism out.

Where did you read this? The only source I can find is the Telegraph.

DuncinToffee · 07/09/2025 10:22

Defence Secretary John Healy to Sky’s Trevor Philips this morning

A Starmer government will never pull out of the ECHR. We would be the only nation in NATO if so
