Labour isn't working - Thread 7

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I stumbled on a thread with a cat tax, it seemed to be a friendly chat with some current affairs thrown in.

Yes it’s a lovely friendly thread. Until there’s a poster who dares to disagree. 🤷‍♀️

Joy 😁😁😁
I really hope he makes it to be LOTO. I think I might be a JC superfan 😂

Fingers crossed.. I wonder if they saved him for later, KB though I like her, is the placeholder.

Evening all, just trying to catch up with all the news after a busy day at work. What a day for Angela Rayner!

Just watching Patrick Christie on GB News and he said a new scandal for AR is she used her disabled son's NHS compensation to buy her second home.

I chose not to poke the bear- or disturb their peace. It would be nice to be given the same curtesy!

The thing with Starmer, Rayner et al is they have been so pious over the years and they are no different from any Conservative.

Evening. Good to see you back.
I've just read that about AR's son on another thread. It's in the telegraph apparently, but I don't subscribe.
I get really uncomfortable with any talk of politician's children. Rayner should not have dragged her son into this. She should be protecting him at all costs imo.

@EmpressoftheMundane yes I agree and with nut ,just being able to discuss and ask without the droning on and on from some posters that just don't add any value or interesting points and are what I like to call...Reforms main recruiters.

I'm actually a swing voter and don't see myself allied to any main parties at all and I find it really irksome to be addressed like a rabid far right Tory because I may have said a mild positive comment.

So I can have a good old moan here and express my outrage at the disgrace that is currently our labour government but I can also say a few positives without being called a rabid lefty.

However I think generally left supporters on here are the die hards never kiss a Tory type, where as generally i find people more to the right more considerate of others views and thoughtful .

I have tried really hard to like Kemi, but I just don't. I liked her as a minister, but never thought she had what it takes to be leader. I cancelled my membership when she won the leadership 😬.

Bloody hell! That’s awful.

Labour won’t cut the rate of growth in disability benefits, pleading that we need to be compassionate, meanwhile AR is buying a second home with money earmarked for her disabled son. (I know it’s not a state benefit- but it is money from the taxpayers to care for her son.)

Xmasbows · 03/09/2025 21:30

As someone who recently paid more stamp duty because of Labour I want her sacked. If she had been a Tory she’d have been out by now. These people have no shame

I haven’t read that story. But it Could be that she’s using / used that money to adapt a property for him. Etc.

Let’s hope so. The optics are dreadful. I don’t like her politics, but I struggle to believe that she doesn’t care about her son.

Liker · 03/09/2025 21:40

Thanks @TheNuthatch I'm always reading the threads, just don't always get chance to comment - but always nodding my head in agreement with you lot 😀

I think AR will go and I wonder if she will join Corbyn's new party? They said on GBN that Ed Milliband will be lining up as new deputy. I would not rule out Wes Streeting.

Anyone see Zia Yusuf on Good Morning Britain this morning? The thing with Reform is they are good communicators and talk to the silent majority. You listen when they talk. I'm on the fence with Reform, but can see how they are gaining traction. Folk are fed up and the Conservatives need to WAKE UP!

No numbers yet for Yvette Cooper's one in one out. And now they are considering ID cards - bonkers.

Rayner dreadful grifter using disabled son as an excuse

I think the story is that the trust in which the money had been deposited for her son effectively paid her 25% of the value of the house on divorce. I think her ex also owns 25% and the trust owns the rest. So yes on the face of it could look like trust money was used. In some ways you think well this probably made the separation/divorce financially fair but was it an appropriate use of the trust.

i think this is moving away from the main issue which is around how can the Housing Minister at a senior level in Government not be able to establish how much stamp duty she should be paying, even with advice.

I really like KB, but I worry that she might not be able to bring the Conservatives out of the desert.

I really, really hope that if there's a leadership change it isn’t acrimonious, and that KB stays on the fronch bench. If someone has been PM, they usually get out of the way afterwards '- but naybe that's less necessary for the LOTO. We need good, capable politicians, and the UK will be worse off if we lose one of KB's calibre.

Agree with you on that

EmpressoftheMundane · 03/09/2025 23:05

I like KB too. She seems to think things through and to be coming from a position I can relate to. It’s fun to hear snappy come backs in PMQs- but do they really move the dial? William Hague was brilliant, he did not lead the conservatives to victory. There is do much more to it.

I think there is an element of luck, being the right person in the right place for the particular moment. I don’t know if she is the right woman for this moment, but I do trust her and I would be comfortable voting for her in a way that I am not with Nigel Farrage.

I like that idea.
Lets hope she stays on if they go for a new leader. I like the way she thinks.

All this talk (elsewhere) about how Rayner was badly advised, poor Angela, she didn’t know, it’s not her fault, it’s her lawyer/tax accountant who are to blame etc. It really annoys me.

It look me less than 2 mins to google “HMRC higher stamp duty rates” and find the following wording on the HMRC website:

”If any of you will own, or part own more than one residential property worth £40,000 or more, you will have to pay the higher rates on your new purchase (unless there is another reason why the higher rates do not apply).
Include any residential property that:
is owned on behalf of children under the age of 18 (parents are treated as the owners even if the property is held through a trust and they are not the trustees)”.

Which is pretty clear to understand, I think.

If Rayner either doesn’t know or doesn’t understand her own government’s tax rules, or doesn’t know where to look them up, then I dread to think what else she doesn’t know about or doesn’t understand.

EasternStandard · 04/09/2025 07:11

Who is this nefarious advisor who gave bad advice anyway?

Shoosmiths have promptly put out a statement because it’s not true they had anything to do with it.

The bad advice part sounds like a big ol lie.

Upstartled · 04/09/2025 07:12

Rumours are circling that Starmer delayed the reshuffle expected on Monday because he already knew that Rayner was heading for an ethics review.

Rayner had already commissioned a barrister last weekend to go over the dealings and he concluded that she had underpaid the treasury.

And so, if that is true, then Kevin Hollinrake is asking if Starmer knowingly misled the public when he said that there was no merit to the accusations levelled against Rayner and it was simply the product of people briefing against their own people and trying to bring her down in a BBC interview on Monday?

Her own team had continued to stick to the line that she had paid all her taxes. Certainly they were convincing enough that on Monday anyone who suggested Rayner was lying about her tax affairs were told they were either snobs or sexist by the true believers.

Upstartled · 04/09/2025 07:15

And now we've had two female cabinet members having a cry at work. At least Haigh fell on her sword with some dignity.

Upstartled · 04/09/2025 07:34

Yes, I like KB but I don't think she has enough charisma to appeal to the population or enough political instinct to make the most of Labour's open goals as the leader of the opposition but I think it would be a shame if she were lost to the backbenches.

SpaceRaccoon · 04/09/2025 07:43

I really like KB as well, she strikes me as extremely intelligent and with a good historical grasp of the world.
