Hate how racist everything has become, and how quickly it’s happened.

I was just looking at facebook, and a ‘Sad face’ newsmaker article came up. Practically all the comments mentioned boats, asylum seekers etc etc. Its really getting me down.

Travelled to the south west last weekend. On the way down no flags on bridges. On the way back, in some areas, every bridge.

Its scary how quickly it’s all happening.

This is often how the Brits abroad behave too - except it’s called expat.

I think SEA should limit the entry of old foreign men clearly there for sex tourism. You know why they don’t?

Does anyone else feel that we are conflating separate issues, or are they all interrelated?

I feel we are mixing up racism with xenophobia and uncontrolled immigration.

onlymethen · 25/08/2025 10:49

So sad just went out to get some shopping and a roundabout has been painted badly and they have sprayed the wall. It’s vandalism, there is not one house with a flag in our market town so I can only assume (hope) these racists are ferried in to do this damage.
Very sad state of affairs.

I've travelled the world and lived with people of all races...my life experience tells me YOU are the one that's out of your depth !

Hey so have I. And I’m not nearly so staggeringly naive as you.

Not always.

However, there will always be an exception to the rule. Also, I find it’s certain areas and not whole countries?!

No I don’t believe them and already said I don’t read the BBC website. It’s evident that person is male and to pretend otherwise is silly but you haven’t explained which news source you consider better and more balanced.

But if you had only listened to Today and Newsnight you wouldn’t even have had a picture to show you the truth. You would have believed them when they told you a women murdered her husband.

I have said I look at a variety of sources - I do so precisely because all news sources have their own bias.

Yes, racists are using false narratives about uncontrolled immigration to legitimise the expression of their racism and xenophobia.

Lilactimes · 25/08/2025 10:51

You do realise that many many of the people of different colour you’re seeing in this country were born here? @Icebreakhell

People fall in love/ marry/ have kids with people of different colours because global travel and movement is a big thing and we have invited people into our country in the past from different countries. They have then had kids.

It’s dangerous to look around and think all brown people don’t belong here or aren’t properly “British” @Icebreakhell - that’s the sort of thought process fascists go through.

I am not call you a fascist - but be aware you are on that track. People across the world are becoming increasingly homogenised because it’s easier to move around now even than 100 years ago. Christ the first moment of people was from Africa into Europe 10,000 years ago. We are all a hot potch of descendants.

Infiltrate? Good grief.

Asylum seekers are not the reason for the UK’s economic challenges.

The tax base is too narrow and the welfare state is too large versus what people are willing to pay for. There are hard choices to be made but some politicians hide behind immigration.

I probably used the wrong word.

they will still claim the benefits etc like the thousands of us British and some do go and get good jobs.

No, Brexit was about who ruled Britain. Which was why Kent - bellwhether for the nation many times - voted to leave. The people of Kent had discovered that some aspects of their local government had been outsourced into France, something that did not appeal.
That poster is similar to the 'Labour isn't working' poster used for the election in 1979 btw.
There was a problem with free movement of labour which was driving down wages at the lower ends of society and causing problems for small businesses e.g. sole plumbers etc. The EU is not worker friendly but business friendly in that 'right of establishment' to import non-local labour at lower rates is championed over union rights. The EU benefits the middle classes who get some crumbs off the table with the right to go and live in another EU country (as long as they have a job) and in the import of cheap domestic labour e.g. nannies, housekeepers etc. and being able to study at a university outside one's own borders. It has little benefit for the working classes - who frequently protest in EU countries. Who forgets the referendum of the Greek people against the austerity and selling off of national assets that the EU (Germany, mainly, to whom Greece is now massively in debt) then enforced? Doesn't sound like a democratic utopia to me - actually, utopia, yes, since utopias are (see Moore and Plato) also the tyranny of the 'best' i.e. a self-appointed elite.

Edited

See you tell yourself that to make you think your leave vote was due to a well considered democratic deficit argument.

It may have been for you.

Many other people voted because they didn’t like immigrants. Didn’t understand that all the EU immigrants were here completely legally and thought they were taking why should belong to British people despite the vast majority of immigrants being net contributors. That poster was a dog whistle to racists which is why the official leave campaign distanced themselves from it.

Brexit was absolutely to do with racism and so is this latest bout of the some people in the UK going loopy

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/08/2025 09:29

No, I can well believe that you don't believe in traditional values like compassion.

And no, when I refer to tolerance, I'm not talking about tolerating abuse or criminal behaviour, any more than about I'm advocating that we should tolerate racism and hate. But I think you already know this.

Those who are promoting hate and division represent the very worst of Britain. They talk about "our values" and "our beliefs" as if they are defending something important, when actually, they stand for nothing but petty hatred. People like that are a scourge on our society and they bring nothing but shame on this country for all of their mindless flag waving.

Well said! Agree with every word.

Absolutely this 100%

There is serious cause for concern, and yet the government are doing absolutely nothing. Less than nothing to address the festering issues at the heart of this, and no doubt some political parties are now taking full advantage of the situation. There is a leadership vacuum.

But that’s not what I said. At no point did I say the BBC should be the only source of news. But it is balanced, it has a public duty to be. Far more than print journalism bd far more than internet news.

You’re making up an argument I haven’t made.

Piknik · 25/08/2025 10:56

This open hostility was IMO triggered by Brexit. Before that, people voted how they voted and you might not agree with your Tory neighbour or your Lib Dem mate, but you respectfully tried to keep politics away from social interactions unless someone's views were really abhorrent. And you normally, wouldn't know that because people weren't open in their unpleasant opinions.

Then the referendum was announced and almost overnight a whole swathe of people who were considering voting 'leave' - for 1000 different reasons - were labelled as racists. Some of those people were. Some were fooled by the Farage bus. Some genuinely believed that economically we'd be better off. Some were sick of Brussels. Some would financially gain from Brexit. Some had lost faith in the EU. Some didn't like brown people. Some didn't have capacity to think critically so just voted how their mate/mum/neighbour voted. And some just weren't sure but knew they had no work and the COL was spiralling and they hoped it might mean change.

But they were all demonised and called thick racists.

And that caused a lot of people to feel outcast from society. And that's how it starts.

I voted Remain but I was horrified by the way anyone who voted differently was treated. And it was perfectly opened a door for the Tommy Robinson's of this world to harness that hurt and shame and start twisting the narrative.

What interests me is how much immigration left wing people think is too much. Because we live in a small country and there are clear signs that our infrastructure can no longer cope. If we keep adding more and more people to our population, how will we expand our road network, our train network, our housing stock sufficiently to keep life bearable? Are you happy to see more and more of our countryside disappearing to accommodate the newcomers? At what point will you say enough?

And what about demographics? Are you happy for the white British to become a minority in their own country? We're fast approaching the point where half the births in Britain are to non-ethnically British parent (which is why Muhammad was the most popular boys' name in 2023). Are people allowed to be concerned about that or not?

Wtaf? I can't believe I've just read that.

This whole thread is fucking frightening. The amount of misinformation and uneducated, unbased, biased and racist opinion is actually staggering.

I'm scared at what this future is going to look like, if this type of rhetoric is allowed to continue.

Being a brown immigrant has never been harder. The only thing I have to my advantage is that I'm born and raised English speaking from an English speaking country.

I hope more people will educate themselves on the whole immigration process. Many of us have had to pay thousands to immigrate here in application fees and visas. We have had to have thousands in savings to show we can support ourselves. We don't get given recourse to public funds or NHS treatment as a landing present. Those that do are in dire straights. In order to claim asylum in the UK it must be done on British soil from within the country. Hence, they apply when they land here.

I have paid for NHS trastment before getting my settlement Visa, I have paid taxes from the moment I put pen to fucking paper and paid for application fees and the day after I landed I was working and paying taxes. I am not unique in anyway shape or form.

Why should I not receive what I'm entitled to? Which is equality and freedom from prosecution because of my birth and colour of my skin. This is a basic universal human right.

There are so many positives to immigration and benefits to the economy. Without immigration systems that are already failing would completely collapse.

How about we see people as people and not their status, skin colour or whatever is the latest new hate is?

Thank you to those who raised their voices for equality and shout down misinformation, racism, antisemitism and hate.

The rest of you please educate yourselves because this immigrant and many like me are far more educated and cultured.

CharSiu · 25/08/2025 11:00

I live within a 15 minute walk of a migrant hotel. They stare at you and are in groups, myself and my women friends don’t like it at all. Many of these have a cultural view that women are way below them.

One of them glared at me a few months ago in the local park, really staring, eye intimidating. I won’t walk-in that park anymore alone.

My family were documented immigrant's, the authorities knew who they were from day one. Anyone arriving without papers should not be allowed to set foot in the UK. Germany are turning away people without papers now. They have more immigrants than the UK as does that bastion of inclusion Sweden most beloved by liberals on MN. They are now paying the price but I see that mentioning stuff like the mass sex assaults that took place in Germany and reported by the BBC here are easily forgotten by liberals. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-35231046

Well I'm a pensioner , only living on the state pension, but I'm not stupid enough to think my heating allowance disappeared due to migrants entering the country . Try again with ' real' critical thinking this time and you'll probably find my heating allowance disappeared due to 14 years of Tory mis- rule !

The colour of a rapist is totally irrelevant, we do need to consider however that it is totally normal for children, mainly little girls to be sold as young as ten years of age to grown men of forty years old in some countries - and some of these men come from exactly these countries. It is not difficult to see why we have a massive problem on our hands in Europe (not just here) and why people are up in arms.

In some countries child rape and molestion is entirely legal. That is a fact.

i agree. But often people who escape those countries are people who don’t agree with the status quo - otherwise they’d still be there.

@Nestingbirds -
