Asylum seekers.

The last government allowed a huge backlog of asylum claims to build up which meant additional housing was needed.

What are your thoughts?

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 24/08/2025 10:53

I think the previous government didn't put enough investment in clearing the asylum backlog to save money/didn't give a shit and therefore the current government (who are pandering to those Reform bullies) was landed a huge problem.

Caveat: I don't live near any hotel ir other establishment that currently houses asylum seekers, so I can't comment on what it's like to have them as neighbours.

Goldengirl123 · 24/08/2025 10:54

It makes me very sad that we have our own homeless people and yet we are providing these people with a comfortable bed and food

And they all seem to be young men

What a surprise that those are your thoughts despite your OP being so vague.

Fitzcarraldo353 · 24/08/2025 10:56

How do you know they're here illegally? Asylum seekers aren't illegal - they're going through the process of claiming asylum which is a legal process.

My thoughts are, where should they go if they're not in hotels? There's a massive social housing shortage and we definitely don't want to bump people down the list even further. HMOs bring their own issues and means they'll be spread out in the community which people also don't want.

So what do you think OP?

Why?

OP posts:
CoastalCalm · 24/08/2025 10:59

The argument about them being young men astounds me - would we really like to see entire families risking their lives to get to our shores ? These young men are spending a lot of money often gathered from their entire family to try and establish a life in a supposedly less oppressive regime. Those who have wife and children can start the process of joining them once they have settled status and send money home to support those left behind . Have we forgotten the horrific photos of drowned babies ?

Fearfulsaints · 24/08/2025 11:00

My thought is why in earth did the previous government create this issue amd how rich are the hotel owners getting.

My second thoughts are around rapid processing and integration as I do live bearish a hotel and the young men thing is an issue.

What are you doing to help homeless people in your local area?

There are often spare homeless shelter / accommodation space as people live a life of addiction on the streets as is the nature of disease - that’s the problem that needs solved initially

PinkiOcelot · 24/08/2025 11:03

Perhaps all those people who are pro illegal immigrants, asylum seekers or whatever you want to call them, should put them up. Problem solved.

OP you’re right, they’re mostly all young men. Where are the women and children? Back home fighting?

The weather is turning now, I’m sure our homeless population would love to be put up in nice warm hotel with meals provided.

LEM0NS · 24/08/2025 11:03

I feel very sad to see all these flags going up. People are being fed all sorts of lies on social media.
I work with the people in these hotels. Believe me some of them have been through hell you couldn’t imagine in your safe little country.
I have travelled extensively and always been made to feel welcome, I’m sad that people coming here are greeted with this hatred.
Don’t believe the propaganda Tommy and his fascist mates are pushing on you

The ignorance on all these threads is shocking. I hope you never have to go through what they’ve been through. How lucky you are to have been born in one of the wealthiest countries on the planet.

I do understand this and as a mother of a young man, this is exactly what I would do. Send him as he is strong and adaptable. (He doesn't have a wife or child tho).

But I think our system of not allowing them to work, putting them in hotels all together, not funding english lessons or really giving lessons in our culture etc is bonkers.

I'll bet you didn't give one singular fuck about 'our own homeless' before asylum seekers - human beings - started getting placed in these buildings.

I can't believe you begrudge humans a comfortable bed and food.

'Our own homeless' are getting the same help they always got, asylum seekers haven't taken anything away from them at all.

MissMoneyFairy · 24/08/2025 11:05

Goldengirl123 · 24/08/2025 10:55

And they all seem to be young men

I do wonder where their children wives, sisters, mums, grandma are when they get left behind in unsafe countries, no one seems to care too much about them.

WhineAndWine1 · 24/08/2025 11:06

@Goldengirl123 Your comment isn’t about homelessness, it’s about bigotry. Blaming refugees for the failures of our government is racist scapegoating, plain and simple. People fleeing war and persecution aren’t taking homes from anyone here. The reason we have homelessness is because of political choices, austerity and a housing system that puts profit before people.

It is attitudes like yours that fuel division and make things worse. Instead of demanding action to end homelessness for everyone, you’d rather attack vulnerable people who have already been through hell. That isn’t compassion, it’s cruelty.

There is more than enough wealth in this country to house and feed both British citizens and asylum seekers. The only shortage is empathy from people who prefer to point fingers at those with the least power.

OSTMusTisNT · 24/08/2025 11:06

If you dont agree with it, write to your MP and give them your suggestions. Mumsnet isn't going to change Government Policy.

You're obviously very concerned about 'British' Homeless people, could you maybe share how you help with that, do you volunteer for a Homeless charity or have a regular donation set up. Presumably you do?

blacksax · 24/08/2025 11:06

@Fearfulsaints I'm not sure the hotel owners are getting rich off the back of this. After all, they were already running a hotel anyway, presumably with guests paying to stay there; they are losing out on the huge profits they make from weddings and the like; and what kind of state is the place going to be in when they finally get it back?

YesHonestly · 24/08/2025 11:07

Asylum seekers.

Illegal immigrants get nothing, you know….because they’re here illegally and don’t tend to make themselves known by popping up at the council offices asking for housing and benefits.

Hotels are paid for out of the foreign aid budget, it’s not an either/or scenario. The amount of asylum seekers currently in hotels in the UK wouldn’t even fill Wembley stadium.

Homelessness is complex, and isn’t solved by putting a homeless person in a flat. Most have complex needs that they need support with in order to maintain a tenancy, but those support agencies have been cut to the bone or closed (Thanks, Tories!).

What do you do to support your local homeless community?

Goldengirl123 · 24/08/2025 11:08

This is exactly what I was asking. I value everyone’s opinions & I respect them

i also do charity work for the homeless
