Tea and coffee on waking

I'm wondering if this is a generational thing. I'm mid fifties and myself and DH always have drank either tea or coffee as soon as we wake up. Our young adult dcs don't. Where I work it is only the older staff that drink tea and coffee at all. The younger ones usually have just water or cold drinks. Do you drink it specifically on waking and if do what age roughly are you?

I somehow don't fully trust people who don't drink either tea or coffee. If it's becoming generational then I'll have to try to shift my thinking.

So weird 😂. Why on earth would not liking a particular drink mean someone can’t be trusted?
I love coffee. My husband doesn’t drink hot drinks. Overall I think he’s probably more trustworthy than me.

Late 50s/early 60s & we always start the day with a cuppa, made by either me or DH. I then drink tea through the day as I don’t like coffee. DH has coffee made with his posh machine, usually a maximum of 2 cups a day. DD16 has coffee sometimes & likes iced coffee. She doesn’t drink tea. I love hot chocolate but for some reason hardly ever make it. DD likes it too.

HevenlyMeS · 23/08/2025 21:16

Yes I completely comprehend & love my mug of coffee 1st thing
Just recently,in order to keep my blood sugar lower, before my mug of coffee, I have a teaspoon of Apple Ciders Vinegar in water
Then it's time to enjoy my marvelous mug of coffee
💚🤗☕

31 - I will sip on water as soon as I wake up but have coffee within 15 mins of waking up. One of my greatest joys, first coffee of the day!

EndorsingPRActice · 23/08/2025 21:19

DH and I have tea on waking and I have a coffee when I get to the office. DS (22) does similar, DD (19) is weird and often doesn’t drink anything until mid morning. At the office the youngsters are split between those who drink coffee and those who drink water. Very few drink tea.

Rainbowbeginings · 23/08/2025 21:22

Water all day everyday for me. I’ll have the odd chai latte in a cafe if we’re out but I don’t ever have tea of coffee. I’m 38!

Impatientwino · 23/08/2025 21:28

46 - DH and I have a very specific pattern! One black earl grey when we go downstairs or one of us brings it up, then one black lady grey half an hour or so later and then one black coffee at 10ish. Never have any more than that apart from the odd iced coffee in summer. DS is 13 and loves a tea/cappuccino/latte! We have always encouraged no sugar in them but I suspect he adds it if we’re not there!

I have 3 colleagues under 30 and they all drink monster from first thing!

😂 I was half-joking, but I think making tea for each other is kind of bonding in house shares, at work, etc. And when people don’t partake in hot drinks at all it makes me very slightly uncomfortable. It’s just not right!

I hate tea 😁

kittensinthekitchen · 23/08/2025 21:34

I'm early 40s, drink coffee pretty much non stop from getting up late afternoon

17yo drinks 2 or 3 caramel lattes a day - first one when she gets up (after lounging in bed for a while first on her phone of course 🙄 ) Her 18yo girlfriend drinks many teas throughout the day

20 yo sometimes has a tea in the morning when he gets up, usually ends the day with a mocha or a hot chocolate

Bufftailed · 23/08/2025 21:38

Usually two coffees straightaway 😂

Then you’re probably right about your DH being the more trustworthy 😉

charlieandthechocolatfactory · 23/08/2025 21:43

29 and coffee and water first thing

MellowPinkDeer · 23/08/2025 21:45

Don’t even bother talking to me first thing until I’ve had my cup of tea. I’ve never understand people who start the day with a glass of water!

I think you might need to expand your horizons a bit.

I've never felt I'm missing out on anything by not drinking tea or coffee and never caused an issue socialising.

I've never thought 'oh I wish I could have a cuppa right now, it would make this situation easier'

One of the strangest things I've read about people that don't drink hot drinks is that apparently we can't be trusted!

I was once told by someone on MN that my not drinking tea or coffee would 'raise red flags' for them about my character. 🙄

AlligatorTears · 23/08/2025 21:53

Water first. Then a coffee. Then I’m on cold drinks the rest of the day. I’m late 30’s. My parents drink coffee from the second they’re up until they lay down at night.

DeadMemories · 23/08/2025 21:54

PurpleKittyKnitting · 23/08/2025 10:37

I'm 53....never liked coffee, don't even like the smell! 🤢

I used to very occasionally have a cup of tea, but it's been over 15 years since I've had one. Just doesn't appeal to me.

When it's very cold, I'll sometimes have a hot chocolate.

I'll have flavoured water, and coke most days.

I thought I had wrote this 😂 can’t stand tea or coffee never drank it, my DH loves tea.

SereneCoralDog · 23/08/2025 21:54

39 and the very first thing I do is make a coffee, closely followed by another if I have time.

Occasionally if I wake up feeling dehydrated then i'll down a pint of water while I'm waiting for the kettle to boil.

FollowSpot · 23/08/2025 21:56

Coffee in bed, every morning since I was a student. (60s now)

Dc have tea or herb tea once up if they fancy it, but not as a ‘must have’ habit

TinyPastry · 23/08/2025 21:58

Myself and DP are in our 20’s and need a coffee before we function in the mornings.

Thedoorisalwaysopen · 23/08/2025 22:01

I tend to have water with breakfast and then make a tea for when I start work. Coffee mid morning. Tea afternoon.

Fifthtimelucky · 23/08/2025 22:01

I’m in my 60s and my husband is in his 70s. Neither of us ever start the day with a hot drink.

I don’t drink tea or coffee at all. He never drinks tea but will sometimes drink coffee (one or two a week if that).

'Raise flags about character' ?!

So far, people that don't like hot drinks can't be trusted, are missing out socially, are childish and others are concerned about our character! 🙄😂

Gymbunny2025 · 23/08/2025 22:05

We get up early. I hear DH firing up his espresso machine then he brings me up a cup of tea in bed. Early 40s.
