Tea and coffee on waking

I'm wondering if this is a generational thing. I'm mid fifties and myself and DH always have drank either tea or coffee as soon as we wake up. Our young adult dcs don't. Where I work it is only the older staff that drink tea and coffee at all. The younger ones usually have just water or cold drinks. Do you drink it specifically on waking and if do what age roughly are you?

I'm 62 and like large glass of water when I first get up, then cup of tea with breakfast. I usually feel a bit dehydrated when I first wake.

LizzyEm · 23/08/2025 10:24

Early 40s.

I never used to drink hot drinks, except the occasional hot chocolate.

I then started having the odd tea. Started having one first thing. Eventually started drinking green tea.

Didn't like coffee at all. Have now started drinking coffee now I've got a dulce gusto machine and it's the first thing I have on getting up or home from the gym. In the week I don't have one until I get back.

Water when I get up. Then a latte and then a cup of tea.

I’m in my 40’s and the first thing I do when I wake up is put the kettle on!

Me too

Bambamhoohoo · 23/08/2025 10:29

Well yes I do, but it wasn’t the first thing I did as a young adult. I probably didn’t start having coffee or tea upon waking until my 30s.

i don’t think it’s generational just age

fivefoottwowitheyesofblue · 23/08/2025 10:30

Mid 50s, don't drink coffee at all. Enjoy tea but can't drink it till I've been up a few hours - just finished my first one this morning.
When in in the office, I'm finding I only make it for the 'social aspect', I rarely actually drink it!
I know I'm very particular though!

A nice cup of tea at home is the thing I long for though when I've been away. It's comforting 😊

It seems some younger people still drink it. I can't imagine starting the day without one. The first thing I check when I book a hotel is that it has a kettle Grin.

A lot of younger ones hang out at coffee shops for a hot drink or fancy cold juice drink .
Much more cool then drinking alcohol

PurpleKittyKnitting · 23/08/2025 10:37

I'm 53....never liked coffee, don't even like the smell! 🤢

I used to very occasionally have a cup of tea, but it's been over 15 years since I've had one. Just doesn't appeal to me.

When it's very cold, I'll sometimes have a hot chocolate.

I'll have flavoured water, and coke most days.

Letstheriveranswer · 23/08/2025 10:39

I, (50+) start the day with coffee and so do my DC (late 20's, early 30's)

Nottodaty · 23/08/2025 10:41

Late 40s always a coffee in bed before we function. We take turns to make it.

Even my girls know let me wake up with a coffee before I function. Eldest 22 will have a coffee on her drive to work, if she home she doesn’t bother.

TheChosenTwo · 23/08/2025 10:43

Dh will have a cup of tea when he wakes up, but after his shower.
I don’t drink tea or coffee but will have a drink of water as soon as I can be bothered to get up (this can be very quick if I’m thirsty and my bedside water is empty!).

youalright · 23/08/2025 10:45

Mid 30s as soon as I wake up the first thing I do is make a cup of tea and iv been doing that since my early mid 20s i didn't as a teenager

JLou08 · 23/08/2025 10:55

Late 30s. I do drink it on waking every day but I didn't start doing it until I was late 20s. I drink it a lot more in my 30s than I did when I was in my 20s.

ExcellentDesign · 23/08/2025 10:55

Late 50s, very rarely drink either on waking, maybe once or twice a month, I normally just drink water (hot or cold) first thing. At work I drink 2 or 3 cups of tea over the course of a day, but if I'm out and about I will have a coffee sometimes. Virtually never drink coffee at home. I really like iced latte having been made to try it by teen DD. I also make a macha latte before bed quite often.

DH (also late 50s) rarely drinks tea, will make himself a coffee in the morning at weekends if not going out in a hurry and drinks several at work every day, he also has a takeout one if we are out and about. Never before work though.

DS (21) hates coffee, drinks tea at work occasionally but prefers herbal.

DD (19) makes a cold brew coffee to take to work in a thermal mug and also drinks iced coffee in coffee shops. She often has a chp of tea in the evening.

My under 40 colleagues by and large drink water and squash, all the regular coffee and tea drinkers are 40+.

the80sweregreat · 23/08/2025 10:55

I love a cup of tea first thing. Not over keen on coffee.
I drink too much tea really!

DramaLlamacchiato · 23/08/2025 10:56

I always have coffee in the morning so does my husband. My eldest son (19) does too but maybe only because we have a fancy coffee machine

YetanotherNC25 · 23/08/2025 10:58

Mid 40’s, coffee as soon as I wake up. But no other hot drinks throughout the day, I drink water.
DC’s don’t drink tea/coffee. It’s water, fruit juice and for the older DC a mild addiction to Pepsi max cherry. They buy this themselves.

Partridgewell · 23/08/2025 10:59

My whole family start the day with a hot drink made my whoever gets up first. Tea for me (46) and both boys (19 and 11) and coffee for DH (46) and DD (21). DH is the only one who would ever not do this, I think. I would rather set my alarm half an hour early and have my tea in bed, even when I have to get up at the crack of dawn for work or travel.

MyAcornWood · 23/08/2025 11:01

I’m 31, DH is 33 and he makes us both a coffee every single morning. I don’t always drink mine because we have two very small children, but I love that he does it without fail anyway. We’re in the process of training our three year old to be the same, he has a little cup of milky decaf with us 😂

LazySunbedDays · 23/08/2025 11:02

DH (50’s) and DSD 17 both start their day with a coffee in bed
I have water, squash or milk and I only have a tea or coffee at home less than once a fortnight when I fancy one.
DH and I go out for coffee most weekends but I’ll only have a hot drink half the time

Sirzy · 23/08/2025 11:02

early 40s and start the day with a herbal tea and a coffee.

reluctantbrit · 23/08/2025 11:03

Without tea I can't function so it's definitely part of waking up.

DD, 18, only recently started drinking coffee. First only the odd cup but now she has one each morning. I definitely see an improvement in her behaviour aka less sleepyness when she has one.

We offered her tea since she was 12-ish in a variety of ways but never pushed, She doesn't like it, coffee only since her friend introduced her to caramel macchiatos and she moved to plain coffee with milk afterwards.

I don't see a need to drink it, there are plenty of other drinks. One of my best friend has the odd espresso but that's it, nothing regular and can still socialise with us everywhere.

Onthebusses · 23/08/2025 11:03

I'm 45 and my Nespresso is in my bedroom and is the second thing I greet each morning.

Hoppinggreen · 23/08/2025 11:04

I am 50 and have a coffee from my B2C machine after I feed the dog first thing.
DS16 doesn't drink tea or coffee and DD19 likes iced Matcha oat whatever nonsense.
A few Mums and 16 year old boys were here yesterday before the boys all set off for an event and one Mum asked my DS to make her a cup of tea, he was happy to but was a bit clueless (we only drink herbal tea and then rarely). Between 4 of them they did manage it eventually
I used to make drinks for my parents all the time, I am sure my DC would be DH drinks 1 coffee and a couple of herbal teas a day and I am the same.
My parents always had a cuppa on the go

Cornishmumofone · 23/08/2025 11:05

I drink a pint of water when I have breakfast and tend to only drink hot drinks when I’m cold. I never drink coffee. I’m nearly 50.
