Tea and coffee on waking

I'm wondering if this is a generational thing. I'm mid fifties and myself and DH always have drank either tea or coffee as soon as we wake up. Our young adult dcs don't. Where I work it is only the older staff that drink tea and coffee at all. The younger ones usually have just water or cold drinks. Do you drink it specifically on waking and if do what age roughly are you?

I’m 30 and have to virtually inject coffee into my veins the minute I step out of bed 😬

popcornandpotatoes · 23/08/2025 20:26

I'm mid thirties and have a cup of tea as soon as I'm up. Enrages me if DH gets up to let the dog out and doesn't put the kettle on

Arsed · 23/08/2025 20:27

Neither me or dh function in the morning without coffee in bed, we argue over who’s turn it is to make it! I’ve usually drunk about 4 by lunchtime but then no more throughout the day or I wouldn’t sleep.

I’m 43 & always have a cup of tea first thing in the morning.
I don’t have hot drinks at work though - can’t be bothered with the milk wars!

Littlepidgey · 23/08/2025 20:27

In my 30s and struggle without some form off caffiene in the morning 😂

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 23/08/2025 20:29

I’m a scout leader and on a recent camp noticed that most of the older kids -15-17 were drinking coffee

Breatheinabit · 23/08/2025 20:34

This thread has made me cry a bit, daft I know but let me explain a bit.
When I lived at home, dad brought me and mum tea in bed and I took it for granted as a small( but actually massive) thoughtful lovely thing to do for someone to start their day.
Fast forward many many years, stuck in loveless marriage, mum and dad long gone, no kids, no one would ever think to bring me a cup of tea in bed, it's such a loving gesture, don't take it for granted you peeps who are getting one.

Airspice · 23/08/2025 20:35

First thing I do on getting up is go downstairs and put the kettle on, it’s a must! My two teens (16 & 17) don’t touch it though. At their age I was already a tea-a-holic

DeirdreChambersWhatACoincidence · 23/08/2025 20:39

Ah @Breatheinabit I know what you mean. It's just me and a very young child and it really is the little things that are the biggest isn't it- sometimes all I need is someone to make me a cup of tea. Hugs.

Kossak · 23/08/2025 20:43

I can't function without several mugs of tea first thing, but I'm getting on a bit. Leaf tea in a teapot. A large teapot, for second mugs. I move smoothly on to coffee by mid morning but seldom drink coffee in the afternoons. The kettle doesn't really get cold in this house. Working from home so can do what I like. Son in his 30s, living and working elsewhere, drinks coffee in the mornings. Says he misses it if he doesn't have it.

Ohmych · 23/08/2025 20:46

The first thing I do when I get up is put the kettle on. I'm 43. Dp doesn't drink hot drinks. I used to have 2 coffees in the morning but I've gone onto tea now. I drink coffee in work. DD who's 28 drinks coffee first thing too.

Gowlett · 23/08/2025 20:50

I’m 50, couldn’t leave the house in the morning without tea.

Coffeeandcake32 · 23/08/2025 20:50

Im 33 and love coffee. I like tea but probably have a cup or two a week. I probably have 3 cups of coffee a day usually first thing but I've recently started to have a mug of warm lemon water with a small amount apple cider vinegar in first thing

RaspberryCloud · 23/08/2025 20:51

RaspberryCloud · 23/08/2025 20:15

First thing I do - wake up, dressing gown on, kettle on!

Whoops forgot - am 40

Chinsupmeloves · 23/08/2025 20:53

50s and absolutely first thing after wee is coffee ☕️

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 23/08/2025 20:54

I am 60-ish, and cannot function without a massive mug full of (fairly strong) filter coffee shortly after waking up. With a yogurt and a small bowl of cereal. Occasionally a yogurt and a couple of breakfast biscuits. I have a wee, and a shower first though (while the coffee is cooking.) Grin (A wee AND a shower, not a wee in the shower!) 😆

My DC - both 30-ish, both have coffee first thing too. They didn't do this until they were at Uni though. So, 19-20ish. Would have a glass of water, or orange juice - or apple juice before that.

Also, I didn't start drinking coffee myself, til I was in my 20s. Used to have milk, or water first thing. I don't drink tea, nor does DH, nor do either of our DC. Never have. All of us dislike tea.

SunnySlopes · 23/08/2025 20:55

Dh and I both start the day with a cup of tea or coffee. Most people I know do! (unless they don’t like hot drinks)

Louoby · 23/08/2025 20:56

First thing every morning is putting the kettle on for a cup of tea (around 6-6:30). I will then have another cup of tea around 8 before I leave the house for school drop off then I’ll get to work at 9:30 and get a coffee then will have another one (maybe 2) before lunch!

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 23/08/2025 20:59

66.. love my cuppa tea first thing.. my Dad was always the one up very early and used to make us all a cuppa every morning once we became teenagers .. before school/ work etc.. my eldest daughter ( age 40) is the same .. my Grandson her son age 20 loves a cuppa too.
My sisters are the same.. only my youngest daughter doesn't like hot drinks.

TabbyCatInAPoolofSunshine · 23/08/2025 20:59

I drank so much coffee whilst doing my A levels that I sometimes couldn't fall asleep due to racing heart and tremors (when writing essays at night I'd make an instant coffee and as soon as I poured the water out I'd refill and reboil for the next one). I'm somewhat glad my children have a more casual relationship with caffeine, but do think energy drinks are worse than tea and coffee.

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 23/08/2025 21:00

I somehow don't fully trust people who don't drink either tea or coffee. If it's becoming generational then I'll have to try to shift my thinking.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 23/08/2025 21:02

We’re mid 50s. First thing I do is switch the coffee machine on when DH gets up for work at 5.30 and make us one before he leaves. I have my second one around 8.30 and that’s it for the day for me. Neither of us drink tea.

The kids, mid 20s, don’t drink hot drinks at all and never have. They don’t make us hot drinks either, which both DH and I grew up doing as it was a standard thing to brew up for everyone.

OtherS · 23/08/2025 21:06

Mid 40s, brush teeth, then shower, then breakfast, then coffee. I'm odd in that I don't like drinking coffee with food, so have water with breakfast. Only started drinking it mid 30s though, drank diet coke before so I think it's a definite improvement, health wise.

Squishymallows · 23/08/2025 21:09

Earl grey as soon as I wake up. Early 30s

Lilofthevalley · 23/08/2025 21:09

56 - Have never drunk either, tried it, didn't like it.
