Tea and coffee on waking

I'm wondering if this is a generational thing. I'm mid fifties and myself and DH always have drank either tea or coffee as soon as we wake up. Our young adult dcs don't. Where I work it is only the older staff that drink tea and coffee at all. The younger ones usually have just water or cold drinks. Do you drink it specifically on waking and if do what age roughly are you?

I don’t make it myself but it my husband is off of a weekend he makes an amazing coffee with cream and brown sugar and a cheeky couple of chocolate hob nobs too

EveryDayisFriday · 23/08/2025 18:14

I get up, showered and dressed but then it's straight to the kitchen for a freshly ground coffee. Unless DH brings one up to bed for me.

Cinaferna · 23/08/2025 18:16

Tea first thing then coffee with breakfast. I am usually making the coffee while drinking the tea. I love both of them. Totally unfair but I have always slightly judged people who don't drink either, as if they haven't quite matured. (I know it;s irrational.) DS2 didn't drink either for ages and I was so glad when he came back from uni drinking both.

I'm 60. I drink water when I get up at 5am. On weekdays, I have my first tea/coffee of the day when I get to work (around 7.30am). On weekends it's usually around 9am before the kettle goes on.

  1. Shower and dress first. Then tea with breakfast. Coffee as I start work (either at home or in office). So basically first thing, but not in bed. I don’t really like sitting and eating or drinking in bed. It’s just for sleeping. Both my sisters have tea/coffee in bed in the morning though, like my parents - they even had a teasmade!

21 year old son likes an espresso first thing. 23 year old daughter is more of a fruit smoothie or matcha latte kind of girl. And possibly a bit later.

supportergirl · 23/08/2025 18:23

I always get an ice coffee before work during the week, don't tend to do hot drinks, on the weekends or if I'm WFH I'll have a red bull not long after waking 😅 I'm 30

catlovingdoctor · 23/08/2025 18:26

31 years old. Can't do anything before a strong coffee in bed.

ButSheSaid · 23/08/2025 18:33

In my forties and I don't drink tea or coffee, they both taste disgusting to me.

I’m 43 and have a coffee first thing.

Dabberlocks · 23/08/2025 18:50

Tea. I'm 60's and have been drinking a cup of tea first thing for a very long time indeed. DH is the same. Adult dd was a coffee queen, but I think even she's gone over to a nice cup of tea now.

Crinkle77 · 23/08/2025 18:51

I'm 47 and can't do anything until I've had a cup of tea.

Knobbsa · 23/08/2025 18:51

Love my coffee first thing. My daughter loves tea first thing.
Boys don't touch either.

Alwayssnacking · 23/08/2025 19:02

I'm 37 and have tea and always first thing when I get up

Nousernamesavaliable · 23/08/2025 19:03

36, I start my day with a pepsi max straight from the fridge. I've never been one for hot drinks- I do not like tea or coffee, may have the occasional hot chocolate over winter.
Just to add i drink water all day...I just like my can of pepsi max in the morning and one with lunch or tea for a bit of flavour.

Catsandcannedbeans · 23/08/2025 19:23

I’m 27 and my DH doesn’t drink hot drinks (freak). When he moved in with me it was a non negotiable that he brings me a coffee when I wake up and that it be good. He is a pro now! His equivalent is a Dr Pepper, which I think is a bit gross. Since kids, we take it in turns to wake up with them. If it’s my day to sleep in he still brings me my coffee (as he is obligated to do until death do us part) but when I’m up first I will make it myself and bring him his Dr Pepper. A coffee on waking is pretty much a necessity for me to not be cranky. When I used to smoke it was a coffee and a cig, but now just a coffee.

Thisisbetweenyoumeandtheinternet · 23/08/2025 19:42

38 and coffee as soon as I wake. I know you’re meant to hydrate before you caffeinate but I never fancy a glass of water!

Pigsinblankets13 · 23/08/2025 20:02

Hydrate before you caffeinate

Brokeandold · 23/08/2025 20:10

I love either a mug of tea or coffee in bed at the weekend ( depending on my taste buds it’s either one or the other- whichever one gives me “glimmers”) my (D)H isnt that bothered ?!
Our second DS , from around age 15 would bring me up a mug of tea around 6am in the working week, I certainly miss that-he went to Uni at age 18, now he’s miles away age 23, good for him ( untie those apron strings-argh!) He loves a mug of tea first thing.
I’m hoping our DD ( age 15) will oblige me now-I wont hold my breath as she doesn't like “hot” drinks!
Our eldest DS can barely get up for work in time so no hope there ….

butterdish93 · 23/08/2025 20:13

Yep. Coffee first thing. Always have since I was 13 or so.

I'm 39 and as soon as I am downstairs I have 2 coffees before I can do anything else!

Me too straight downstairs kettle on i make 2 cups attention same time drink them while watching news then make another to tale round d with me whilst I get ready for work. My head is racing when I get up and that just settles me and helps me think straight!

RaspberryCloud · 23/08/2025 20:15

First thing I do - wake up, dressing gown on, kettle on!

Sunnydayze43 · 23/08/2025 20:22

One of my favourite early memories is having a cup of tea with 2 sugars with my dear dad 😊

Me too @ConnieHeart 😊 sweet memories.

On a small table in my home, along with the seashells collected and given to me by my DCs, sits a very small cup and saucer, the very one I had my tea in when I was just a little girl.
Habits that have been steeped in tradition are hard to give up.

HelenHywater · 23/08/2025 20:24

I have a coffee (two in fact) first thing, but don't drink anymore all day. My colleagues at work only see me drink water.

My dd (20) drinks iced coffee first thing. Actually my other daughter age 22 drinks a coffee too. My 17 yo ds doesn't but I think he's quite young to do that.
