Tea and coffee on waking

I'm wondering if this is a generational thing. I'm mid fifties and myself and DH always have drank either tea or coffee as soon as we wake up. Our young adult dcs don't. Where I work it is only the older staff that drink tea and coffee at all. The younger ones usually have just water or cold drinks. Do you drink it specifically on waking and if do what age roughly are you?

DH and I have a coffee (post showering and dressing), both DCs (twenties) also have a coffee first thing. I think that's common as their friends to the same here.

KPPlumbing · 23/08/2025 13:10

41 and I go to bed looking forward to my coffee, which I drink first thing.

I only have one hot drink a day, but would be panic stricken if I had to go without!

StarlightLady · 23/08/2025 13:13

Coffee is compulsory first thing. 😀

I've never felt I'm missing out on anything by not drinking tea or coffee and never caused an issue socialising.

I've never thought 'oh I wish I could have a cuppa right now, it would make this situation easier'

One of the strangest things I've read about people that don't drink hot drinks is that apparently we can't be trusted!

I’m in my 40s. I can’t stand tea. I drink one double espresso in the morning, and no other hot drinks throughout the day. My DH (also 40s) doesn’t drink hot drinks at all.

Middlemarch123 · 23/08/2025 13:28

Mid 60s. Wake up, pop to loo, put kettle on, feed cats. Make large pot of Yorkshire loose leaf tea, take teapot and my favourite mug and milk jug back to bed for half an hour, bliss. I can’t function before my brew.

Flutterbees · 23/08/2025 13:37

Cup of tea first thing, then a coffee after breakfast.

cinquanta · 23/08/2025 13:44

I’m 50 and I don’t like tea but do drink black coffee. Not on waking though.

My husband on the other hand has to have a cup of tea when he wakes up. It has to be tea, not coffee. He drinks coffee with breakfast.

If we are somewhere hot, he drinks tea rather than water.

cannyvalley · 23/08/2025 13:47

I’m 41.
first thing I do in the morning is stumble to the coffee machine and fire it up. Have done for years and years… probably started when kids were babies, in the land of no sleep.

i recall liking a cup of tea in the morning g when i was a teen, early 20’s before having g kids. Don’t think it was as ‘urgent’ as my morning coffee is now tho.

the younger people at work drink water or pop, but some have cups of tea. Deffo see younger colleagues drinking less hot drinks that the older ones.

I thought it was just me that did this 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

It’s literally the first thing I do when I get downstairs. Coffee machine on before I even let the dog out. Dd who is a teen loves tea and coffee but it isn’t the first thing she does.

I’m obsessed by tea and coffee. I actually go to sleep excited about waking up for coffee.

Funnywonder · 23/08/2025 13:53

Sometimes I forget to drink anything when I get up, but when I do, it’s tea. I’m 58. Never anything else as my first drink of the day. My 17yo usually likes a cup of black coffee when he gets up, but will also drink fruit juice or Pepsi Max(🙄)

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 23/08/2025 13:53

Once showered and downstairs the first thing I do is switch on the kettle. DD16 does this too.

DH and DS14 and DD13 do not drink hot drinks.

I'm 44

janehopper · 23/08/2025 13:53

I hadn't really thought about this before as a cup of tea before anything else in the morning is what I grew up with and still do at my mum and dad's now. At home I have coffee now. But I think after my generation (45) it won't be a thing anymore which is quite sad really, although I can't really explain why.

FLOWER19833 · 23/08/2025 13:55

Wouldn't even occur to me to leave for work without at least one coffee. I am 43

Me too, i think about my morning coffee when i fall asleep, in winter months i put my American coffee maker on timer so its ready when i am opening my eyes

Zodiacrobat · 23/08/2025 14:04

I have to have a couple of big glasses of water first thing as I run hot and feel quite dehydrated when I wake up.

But then I have a strong small coffee with my breakfast straight after!
Drink decaf the rest of the day along with lots more water.

But I def need that morning shot of black to make life bearable.

Zodiacrobat · 23/08/2025 14:08

Sorry should have said, I’m mid 50’s. Hubby is similar to me but also drinks decaf tea sometimes.

Teen DC has started to have a latte style coffee in the mornings since we got a better machine with a fancy milk frother. Wasn’t bothered before. Also drinks loads of water and usually a glass of milk with dinner.

Sunnydayze43 · 23/08/2025 18:02

I can't imagine beginning my day without a steaming mug of extra strong tea.
My DH however, because he drinks pots of tea throughout the day, makes a carafe of coffee just for him.
I read once that younger people are shunning tea in favour of other drinks, so not surprised to read this.
A bit OTT here, when we visited a friend in the southern US, we learned that it's a cultural thing to have cold fizzy drinks; Coca-Cola for example, for breakfast instead of coffee.
I can't say I blame them though, you still get the caffeine but in a hot climate it would be nicer to drink.

fetchacloth · 23/08/2025 18:04

Early 60s. Two mugs of strong black coffee in the morning to wake up, green tea before lunch.
I mainline caffeine in the morning as I'm not a morning person so it's the only way I cope.
No caffeine after lunch otherwise I struggle to sleep at night.

ConnieHeart · 23/08/2025 18:09

I always have a cup of tea in the morning before I do ANYTHING. Then I try to have a 2nd before properly starting the day 😊. OH is the same. Dd1 (21) loves a cup of tea or two during the day & a latte & dd2 doesn't drink tea, just iced coffee once a day. One of my favourite early memories is having a cup of tea with 2 sugars with my dear dad 😊

pokewoman · 23/08/2025 18:10

Im 39 and have a coffee before I do anything. Im not even sure of my name before caffeine.

Eviebeans · 23/08/2025 18:12

I have tea in bed then coffee
I drink water during the day - no hot drinks
have recently been advised that my first drink of the day should be water - hard habit to change
I’m in my sixties

FloweringBuds · 23/08/2025 18:13

Yep tea every morning as I'm getting sorted. This started 10 years ago in my 30s Before that it was red bull !

Violinist64 · 23/08/2025 18:13

DH always brings me a of tea first thing in the morning. I like coffee at around 11 am. I mostly drink tea, though, DH will drink more coffee. All my three adult children drink hot drinks DS1, mostly tea but likes a latté in a café. DS2 drinks black coffee exclusively and DD is another tea drinker but loves hot chocolate in a café. There do seem to be more people who do not drink hot drinks. It seems a bit childish to me but, of course, it's their choice. It isn't only young people - l know an 85-year old who only has cold drinks.
