Labour isn't working - Thread 6

TheNuthatch · 22/08/2025 15:23

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I'm not actually disappointed with Starmer. He is exactly how I though he would be. I despised him viscerally even before he became Labour leader. The man repulses me, always has. If he was in a lift, I'd instinctively take the stairs.

@Hollyohara Thank you for your kind words. This thread keeps me sane 😁.

@twistyizzy I'm trying not to go down that particularly rabbit hole. It's too frightening to consider that all this may actually be deliberate. I'm sticking to Hanlon's razor.....for now.

Oh for goodness sake, of course it is not deliberate. It's pure and simple incompetence in all its glory. That particular rabbit hole takes us into over-imaginative conspiracy theory territory and is really quite ridiculous.

Hollyohara · 24/08/2025 21:26

‘If he was in a lift, I'd instinctively take the stairs.’

😂😂

Same. Actually I can’t think of a Labour politician I would willingly share a lift with. Of course Moai Man must take a lot of lifts. What with his lack of legs. 🗿 👓

Wow there...steady on.
As I said if you read my post again, I'm (personally) sticking to Hanlons razor.

If others feel differently, that's fine too. I'm tolerant like that. No need to describe it as ridiculous.

I know you said you didn't subscribe to that line of thought. Just commenting generally that I think that line of thought is segueing into the absurd. The reality is fantastical enough 😂

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 24/08/2025 21:59

I do think there can be a tendency to look too hard for bad or hidden motive when stupidity and uselessness is much the more likely answer. Which is Starmer Labour all over.

Human flaws, like self-adoration and arrogance, are often the base reasons for political failure. The difference - at least in one respect - that I see between the right and the left is that the right doesn’t stand on its saintliness. So the right is less likely to be hypocritical and less likely to mislead the public about its true intentions.

If that was aimed at me, cheers!

Look at who bank rolls Labour, same as any political party. The old saying "follow the money".

Nah, it's not that strategic - they are just useless.

Partly agree but also partly disagree sorry.
The court case against taxing education laid out too many lies and deceipt for me to believe that it's just purely incompetence.

90 000 jobs lost in the hospitality industry since October. It represents half of the job losses in that time. This is an industry that is clearly cut to the bone and will be further harmed by the additional employment rights that will increase staffing costs and make it harder to adapt to the peaks and troughs throughout the year.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 25/08/2025 18:26

In other, fucking dreadful news, apparently this hot summer plus an abundance of discarded and easily available food, has supersized the rat population - in both their numbers and size - not far off chihuahua 😯. It's at this point I can only be relieved that we remain in a council with weekly bin collections. Poor Birmingham - if having a piss-poor bankrupt inept Labour council wasn't enough, they're about to set the scene for a plague of ROUS's (for the Princess Bride fans).

Hollyohara · 25/08/2025 18:47

😂😂 Ah. The joys of a Labour government.

I get it. Fire swamp.

I bloody loved Cary Ewles, anyway, I feel myself drifting off-topic....

Yep, the industry is still recovering from the lockdowns and still paying off debts incurred then. To have additional employment costs and huge increases in minimum wage, at a time when customers are already cutting back on leisure spending, is crazy. Pubs, bars and restaurants are reducing opening hours and cutting staff to bare minimum just to stand still. As entirely predicted by the industry, the result is job losses, reduced turnover for the businesses, businesses closing down etc. It all means increased unemployment and therefore increase in benefits cost, as well as loss of tax income for the government.

TheNuthatch · 26/08/2025 21:07

Evening lovelies 😁. Sorry for the lack of engagement. Life is chaotic atm.

God awful news for the hospitality industry. 90K job losses is shocking. It will take years, if not decades, to recover from this Labour stint. It's unforgivable that we have a Chancellor who hit businesses with tax rises when many were still very fragile post covid. She should know this ffs. Growth FIRST, then and only then, look at taxes.

Yields on 30 year bonds have now reached 5.62% which is a 27 year high. Not quite up to the high of 5.66% we saw in April but its only heading one way ⬆️. Reeves's piss poor decisions are coming home to roost.

Farage has caused a stir today hasn't he! Will Labour dance to his tune? Interesting to see how far Labour will go on immigration to stay in power. 950 people crossed the channel over the bank hol weekend.

Because we aren't bogged down with ideological doctrine

Ain't that the truth !!
I did not went to pursue the Tories after they let us down ,they ate themselves
However under sunak there was far far more hope and minor improvements than there are now.
It's dismal now.
But I did feel a tenny bit of optimism that fresh eyes and fresh ideas maybe what we needed

TwoTierBbq · 26/08/2025 21:15

TheNuthatch · 23/08/2025 19:27

That speaks volumes doesnt it. A sign at their house to let the world know that they hate tories ffs. Your friend would love me lol!
It is trendy to hate tories. My kids hate tories too, "except you Mum" 😂😂

The id never kiss a Tory t shirts ... People on here saying they would feel let down if their (brainwashed ) DC ever voted Tory
It's a cult

TwoTierBbq · 26/08/2025 21:17

Many parts of the education sector is reeling from the ni.rise . Reeling !!

twistyizzy · 27/08/2025 10:14

Well if speculation is right, that Torsten Bell will be overseeing the Autumn budget then a lot of the champagne socialists of Mumsnet could get their wish to pay more tax! He is radical left wing and would happily see everything taxed! A lot of people are going to get a shock.
However it also calls into question where that leaves Reeves....

He's been the favourite to replace her for a while. IMO he is one of the most unlikeable politicians Labour have. He's awful when faced with media scrutiny. Remember his newsnight appearance? 🤢

I don’t know how exactly these things work but why is he “overseeing” the budget? Can’t Reeves do it on her own?
