A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

He's been the favourite to replace her for a while. IMO he is one of the most unlikeable politicians Labour have. He's awful when faced with media scrutiny. Remember his newsnight appearance? 🤢

Vile man and ultra left wing 🤮 Life is going to get harder for most people.

He's obviously got himself a brown tongue trying to impress Starmer.

Ah well, it's another nail in the coffin for Labour. Tick tock.

And...now Jack Straw has said we should revisit the ECHR echoing Farage's sentiment that human right laws have been deployed in a way that wasn't considered at the point they were codified into our own system.

You know, I know there are some dyed in the wool Tories here, but I kind of love watching the old guard wake up and unravel the black and white thinking of current labour supporters and their sentiments about who these people are who have the 'wrong' kind of ideas.

It's not just the C2s and the DEs - or racist gammon - as has become the shorthand for those who should not say such things.

Hollyohara · 27/08/2025 10:56

‘I know there are some dyed in the wool Tories here’

I’m not sure about that, maybe! I think it’s more despising labour. As they are today, especially. I’ve never actually voted for the conservatives. When I’ve voted, I’ve only voted for Labour. My first vote was for Tony Blair. Since then a lot has changed. I haven’t actually voted for the last xx elections, I couldn’t bring myself to choose any of them.

Interesting about Jack Straw! Who next?

As for the rhetorical comment about why is someone overseeing reeves’ decision as treasurer? I paraphrase . Well that kind of says it all about her competency.. nothing we didn’t know already.

I will vote in the next election, I’ll vote for whoever we need to vote for to get Labour out.

Yes I posted about Reeves and the budget. Agree somewhat rhetorical, just surprised as it would appear to openly undermine her authority.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 27/08/2025 11:05

I'd have voted Tony Blair in 1997 but I was a few weeks too young. In a northern town, hammered by Thatcher and decimated in the 90s recession - I can't begin to tell you how much trust capital they have had to blow through for me to give up on them and finally vote for the conservatives in the last g.e.

But I think Straw was a good home secretary, and just all up decent guy. And they should ignore him at their peril.

TheNuthatch · 27/08/2025 11:17

My first ever vote was for Tony Blair too. Northern mill town, Thatcher hating, labour stronghold upbringing. I switched after Iraq. Adulthood also brought a period of political enlightenment. I vote tactically though, no point voting tory where I live as it's wasted.

Jack Straw's comments remind me of the difference in calibre between the previous Labour gov and the current one. There's no comparison.

Yes, that's what it is, it's a relief to see a measured opinion from a politician that doesn't build a rhetoric against some derided 'bogeyman other'. It's just a statement of fact and opinion.

I think you can say the same about the quality of the One Nation Conservative MPs from a similar era, rather than the bunch they have now.

Even if you didn't agree with their politics, MPs were totally different back in the day (all parties). Johnson made sure he got rid of the old guard Tory MPs when he was PM.

With a few exceptions, the general quality of those people who are / want to be MPs has plummeted in the last decade or so.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 27/08/2025 11:30

Contrast Straws proposal against the Downing Street response to criticism of the ECHR....

'Anyone who is proposing to renegotiate the Good Friday Agreement is not serious,” he added. The spokesman endorsed comments by housing minister Mathew Pennycook that leaving the ECHR would align Britain with Russia and Belarus.'

So, it's not just a matter of the Good Friday agreement being a difficult matter that would require greater thought and skilled negotiation that might be beyond their capability, it's...

Those people over there aren't serious people and look, look, if you squint you can see the Russians in their soul.

I mean, come on...do better. The othering is unnecessary and counter productive.

Yes totally agree. I just think it's even more pronounced with Labour.

Yes, this with bells on. Current Labour are so feckin divisive at every opportunity.
Constant comparisons with Russia for anyone who disagrees with them. They can't even see the irony in it.

I see speculation that the French govt is on the brink of collapse. Should think the “one in one out” agreement might be in jeopardy.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 27/08/2025 12:40

Yeah, I expect the irregular hokey cokey, one in one out, will be on the back burner. Looks like they are in for a hell of a rollercoaster if the austerity package doesn't pass.

CinammonSquirrels · 27/08/2025 14:21

I'm pleased that Labour are getting a thrashing in the polls. They have been abysmal so far and there is no cohesion whatsoever in their portfolio of nasty policies. However, Tories are dead ducks unless they can have a massive rebrand. Badenoch has got so much to criticise but doesn't seem to be galvanising that. Seeing Reform climb the polls fills me with dread.

Julen7 · 27/08/2025 14:30

TheNuthatch · 27/08/2025 13:21

Well France have huge debt (even worse than ours!) and the PM, Bayrou, has drawn up austerity measures but of course no one likes them. To try and get them passed Bayrou is going to try for a vote of confidence early Sept. which he will most likely lose. If he does lose it would make things difficult for Macron as he would be dragged back into urgently trying to sort out France’s domestic issues - like Starmer he really prefers poncing around on the international stage to dealing with dull old stuff at home, even if it is bankruptcy.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 27/08/2025 14:33

Some more YouGov polling...only 37% of the population can identify Ed Davey 😂 in comparison 89% can identify Farage, 87% Starmer, 62% Badenoch. I wonder how fair that was though and if he might have done better if there was a pic of him clinging to a parachute/ falling off a paddle board?

And here is yougov's work on the most pressing issues of the day.

There's clear water between the most cited concern, immigration, and the economy. Never fear, Rachel will put that right when she gets back to work.

Greyhoundmad83 · 27/08/2025 14:41

I honestly feel so miserable today. I feel like the 'racist' card is being thrown out wildly again to anyone who is worried about immigration and the impact is has on our lives and prosperity. I really feel the hard left bave been such useful idiots for the governments.
I'm sick of death of working full time just to pay extortionate housing bills, council tax and now hear that energy bills are going up yet again.
I just wish there was some hope.

Southwestten · 27/08/2025 14:50

People on here saying they would feel let down if their (brainwashed ) DC ever voted Tory.

I remember a thread a few years ago in which posters said they would be so horrified if their dc went out with a Tory voter or God forbid, married one.
Because, apparently, it’s right wingers who are closed minded and intolerant ……..
