DH wants to wear shorts to birthday meal

I've arranged a big family lunch at a very smart hotel to celebrate DH's Significant Birthday. He's worn shorts every day over the summer (he doesn't work). I said he should wear long trousers but he doesn't see why he should. What do you think?

Well he's an adult and can wear what he wants surely?

TinyTempest · 10/08/2025 11:19

I think it's a poor choice but it's up to him.

Assuming the restaurant will allow it.

It also depends on the shorts really. City shorts/Chinos might be ok.

Large baggy Union Jack shorts, not so much.

HoneyHoneyHowYouThrillMe · 10/08/2025 11:20

Doesn't he have any lightweight trousers?

I'd expect DH to dress smartly to eat at a smart hotel as well, and to be fair to him he'd never think to do otherwise either!

SprayWhiteDung · 10/08/2025 11:20

So it's been specifically organised to celebrate his big birthday; but you don't want him to be able to celebrate it in the way that he feels most comfortable?

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 10/08/2025 11:20

I think he should wear whatever he is comfortable in.

ShesTheAlbatross · 10/08/2025 11:21

It’s his birthday? Then I think some chino type shorts are fine if the restaurant is fine with it.

Picklechicken · 10/08/2025 11:21

Depends on the shorts and the place, surely!

Adidas sweat shorts - nope. Smart tailored shorts and a short sleeved shirt - maybe.

HoneyHoneyHowYouThrillMe · 10/08/2025 11:21

But I suppose if the venue doesn't stipulate such as part of the dress code, then ultimately it's up to him.

Lins77 · 10/08/2025 11:21

Of course he can wear what he wants, but I don't want him to feel uncomfortable when he's the only one in shorts. He's not the best at knowing what's appropriate to wear.

If they’re smart shorts and the dress code allows it, why wouldn’t you?

He's a grown ass man! 😂😂

Leave him be.

youreactinglikeafunmum · 10/08/2025 11:22

Its time to ltb xx

jokes aside, he should put on a smart pair of trousers for the event, it won't kill him. He should do it to look presentable for his family

He can change into shorts as soon as he gets home if its so important to him 🙄

Yes but he'll learn then, won't he? And he'll learn then that sometimes he ought to give your advice some credence, since you did try to say.

converseandjeans · 10/08/2025 11:22

Does he actually want a lunch at an upmarket hotel? It sounds like he’s more comfortable in casual clothes.

Of course I do - I've gone to a lot of trouble to make it nice for him. I just don't want him to feel like he's dressed inappropriately when he gets there. But I'm not going to insist.

I mean at the end of the day it'll be his own fault if he feels stupid.

He's not a teenage boy that you have to manage.

IMissSparkling · 10/08/2025 11:23

How big a birthday are we talking? 40, meh let him wear the shorts. 50 plus, no-one wants to see his legs in the dining room.

Yeah, he'll love it - the place has a special significance and all the family will be there.

What sort of shorts?

Yes, 50 plus 😂

If he’s one for wearing shorts all the time he’s not going to give a monkeys or even notice what others are thinking of him - it’s you that’s bothered.

In that case the only way he’ll learn is for him to make the decision himself and if he feels uncomfortable he’ll remember that feeling for the next time.
If he doesn’t feel uncomfortable then he’s happy with his choice

Fenellasbum · 10/08/2025 11:26

Unless there’s a dress code at the hotel, I’d just let him get on with wearing shorts. If the place is really posh, I’d phone up and check.

But he’s choosing to wear shirts so he obviously doesn’t feel it’s inappropriate or he’d choose to wear trousers?!

Of he knows everyone else is wearing trousers and is still choosing to wear shirts why would be arrive and suddenly regret the decision?

Chino/tailored shirts and a shirt is pretty normal smart summer attire here where I live. He’d look out of place in trousers ime.

rwalker · 10/08/2025 11:27

As long as there a nice chino/tailored short rather than grey sweatpant, Hawaiian board shirts or high cut flappy running shorts hell be fine
