Be honest; if you’re a tall woman do you consider yourself superior to shorter women?

I know a few tall women who refer to shorter women as things like ‘short arses’ and I’ve seen the same thing said by taller women on the Style and Beauty boards here, too.

I’m 5ft 4, so am short myself, and have had derogatory comments made to me in the past by a few tall females. Yet I’d never dream of calling them an insulting name about being tall, or even really comment on their height at all.

I think this was a thread to get tall women to hate themselves and sadly it has worked for a few.

I’m not quite sure why everyone thinks life is much harder for tall women though? Models are all tall… the social epitome of beauty that’s lauded around the world as the ideal. They’re all 5’8+ so I’m not sure why we’re all acting like tall women don’t have representation within beauty standards.

I think tall height is generally considered masculine (its linked to testosterone levels) - so a plus for men but negative for women in terms of attractiveness. Also aren't the beauty standards for models influenced a lot by gay men who want tall and androgynous looking women (eg very skinny, no curves, tall) so they look more boyish? I'm sure I read that somewhere - that modelling beauty standards aren't about femininity

I thought that 5,4 was average for females in the UK? I'm only 5,6.5 and am a fair bit taller than most of me female colleagues, yet I've always wanted to be a few inches shorter (silly insecurity, because I'm quite broad across the shoulders and have always felt I have a fairly masculine frame as I have no hips and a smaller chest) I think the majority of people are likely more concerned with their own insecurities to think too much about other people's height!

waaaaaah · 08/08/2025 22:52

@JamesMacGill sadly my (very well used, not influencer haul and return type) account was deleted in the weird recent purge, so I’m asos-less now! Only DP and LTS do true Tall items like 36 and 38 inside leg and longer sleeves etc. Places like MandS and Next claim they do, but are really only 34inch length and still short at the wrists and torso. I’m so mad at asos 😂

I’m not sure anyone insinuated it’s problem. I prefer being smaller to taller, in as much as we prefer anything in life.

The person I quoted literally said it was a problem.

I have the same experience at 5’6”

idk but I’m pretty sure most women and straight men also find models attractive… femininity is often contradictiory sometimes it demands we’re fragile with bones on show and other times requires a buxom chest and child bearing hips. Femininity doesn’t rule beauty standards at all.

Haven’t read the read but isn’t 5’ 4” slightly above average?

Apologies but UK average went up from 5’3 to 5’4 as of 2022

Says a short arse!

MetalliCat89 · 08/08/2025 23:48

I'm 5 ft 11 and built like a tank; I've probably had more less than nice comments about it than thoughts on shorter women.

However as I've aged I now always get shorter elderly people asking me to reach stuff in the supermarkets for them so I'm clearly not unapproachable lol.

I also very rarely have to move aside for groups of men which is nice compared to what some women have to put up with.

Haha true. I personally find tall women really elegant and attractive

NW3Lady · 08/08/2025 23:51

LaughingCat · 08/08/2025 22:38

While I love being a bit taller than you are @NW3Lady, the bit I always found hilarious with internet dating was how many guys at 5 foot 9-10 would claim to be 6 foot. I realised that if you’re 5 foot 5, or 5 foot 7, at some point, taller than you is just, well taller so they could get away with it. But if they met me in person it would be painfully obvious they definitely weren’t. And they always said things like ‘oh, I didn’t think you’d actually be that tall’.

For the record, most of my exes have been shorter than me bar maybe 4 or 5 of them and they all LOVED my height. Not in a fetishy kind of way, they just loved the package I came in. And my aunt is 6 foot 1 and happily married to a short-arsed Yorkshireman (I know, I’m apparently not allowed to use that term anymore) for nearly 40 years. So loads of guys are definitely out there who don’t give two hoots about how tall you are!

Unfortunately when I was on the dating scene I never seemed to meet them.

Orders76 · 09/08/2025 00:18

I like being tall, but that feeling is nothing to do with other shorter people being equally happy.

I'm 5'2", not unusually small although being a pear shape, I'm smaller in the top half and people seem to underestimate my height because they think my build is small.

I once did a 10km running time trial with DH. He was ahead pacing much of the time and I followed. 4 laps of the park. It was surreal, people saw him and moved out of the way. It was really odd to not have to constantly plan ahead 15m in advance and weave around people. It was so easy! It made me appreciate how much mental energy goes into constantly dodging people.

Generally I like my build, but the downside is having spent my 20s and 30s being invisible. Things like defending my place in queues because people don't register that I'm an adult standing in line. The worst one was colleagues failing to register my presence amongst y7s and y8s. Trying to send me out of the break detention I was hosting was somewhat undermining. Actually no, worse was the night I got ignored by bar staff for 30 minutes. By the time I finally got served, my friends assumed that I'd slipped off for the last bus and buggered off to the next bar without me!

The other thing is that there is no point in going to busy, standing events. I can't see through chests and shoulders, and it gets hard to hear clearly through the wall of obstructions. It also makes me claustrophobic.
The perk is that I do fit neatly into old theatre seats. Plane seats aren't too bad although they're really not designed for human use.

I'm not a great judge of height. Most people under 45 are some kind of "taller" People observe that I'm short but people are very rarely nasty about it. There are friends that I mutually banter with which is an even playing field.

The people I get most aggro from are 12 year olds as I'm often one of the first adults that they get taller than. The novelty tends to wear off; although DS has a particularly annoying smug look about it. He's got no grounds to be smug though, the view up his nostrils is getting rather hairy Grin

Some while back I found some comparative stats on porn stars and fashion models. The porn stars were the slummer end of ordinary and were ordinary height. The fashion models were very much taller than ordinary and crazily thin. I think it's a good bet that the average porn star's vital statistics reflect heterosexual men's preferences better!

No it’s not, it’s genetic not hormonal 😆 PCOS is linked to high testosterone, I know a few ladies with PCOS and they’re all shorter and apple shaped.

The rubbish being pedalled on this thread - I can’t help but think it was started to get everyone bashing tall women. There are some short women out there who seem to make a big ‘thing’ of their height and how tiny/cute they are when they… just look like a short woman. And the funny thing is OP is actually an inch taller than average!

Porn stars also very often have fake boobs and ridiculous OTT lip fillers - does that mean we should all aspire to that look to attract the "majority" of men?

I don't understand this. Were people running towards you?
Normally in races everyone's running in the same direction. You do have to weave because they can't see you (or anyone). They may be able to hear more heavy footed people.
Or do you mean members of the public were using the park at the same time, just going about their day? That would be an unusual set up for a time trial - like adding a handicap.

Anyway, I haven't noticed any disadvantage for shorter people in running races in terms of being able to compete, if anything the smaller people can nip in and out more deftly than larger people.
