Is there a serial killer in the UK?

I don't know what to think. It is social media, after all. But . . .

I've seen quite a few TikTok videos recently, all listing a large number of female deaths, all being found in or near a body of water (river, canal, lake). And all ruled as "not suspicious" by the police, even before toxicology reports have been released (if they are even released).

The first video I saw listed 14 women over a period of 30 months, but some comments were saying that there have been other deaths which haven't been reported on. Other videos mention different women.

These deaths are over the country, leading to speculation that it could be a lorry driver.

Does it seem likely, or is this the latest SM scare?

I find people who do criminal profiling and psychology fascinating. Not because the subject is interesting but because the conclusions are always the bleeding obvious mixed with useless generalities.

Never heard of her but if she has any serious insights should she not be sharing them with police via official channels not putting them out to all and sundry on social media?

You might want to aquaint yourself with Laura Richards before you post such total nonsense about her.

Your assumption appears to be that because you don't know who she is she isn't an extremely well respected expert in her field

TheLudditesWereRight · 26/07/2025 15:21

No, my assumption is that highly expert profilers share their insights first and foremost with police not Insta.

Emma Kenny is the Queen of stating the Bleeding obvious
And that other body language guy who say things like ,you can his left eye is twitching which indicates he's feeling the pressure etc.

Why do you think she doesn't do that when you've never even heard of the woman? That makes no sense at all, how would one tell from anyone's social media posting that they hadn't earlier shared their thoughts either the police?

There's no mandatory #alreadyreportedtolawenforcement rule on instagram

As I understand it the police prefer not to have the information they hold spread over the media, since, if the information shared is accurate rather than simply yet another guess, that gives the criminal a heads up.

I agree op. Never understood how a person could drown themselves. Your instinct would kick in surely?

I'm sure thats true but we're talking about the other way round, do the public need to tell the police their theories before they make podcasts or tiktoks or write articles in The Times. Is it wrong to voice an opinion without logging it with 101 first?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/07/2025 18:19

It may make the lives of the police more difficult for them to be the last to hear it, I suppose. But then, if they themselves spread vacuous rumour they can't really complain if other people do as well.

TheVeronicas · 04/08/2025 13:23

I think people are being a bit unfair to tiktok! As a platform! Yes there's some crap on there but there is on all social media platforms and the algorithm is very good--if you know what you want it to show you (and not!) it responds well, I only ever get interesting and well-substantiated news (including crime) and histoory channels and funny animal videos etc-none of the stupid ones.

Emma Kenny irritates the crap out of me to be honest. So OTT with her gestures and mannerisms and yes, a lot of 'No Shit Sherlock!' moments with her too.

People have been drowning themselves since we slithered out of the water and onto land. You not understanding why someone would doesn’t mean anything apart from you aren’t likely to do it.

The criminal profiler posting ‘feels unsettling’ is just more attention seeking nonsense.

If she’s so good at pattern profiling she’d see another common link - all women of peri or menopause age. Back in the day these women might have been medicated to incapacity or committed or killed themselves and never had it reported due to shame or lack of interest.

As I said before what people need to pour their time and attention into is asking why so many women are suffering through peri and menopausal symptoms to the point of suicide and yet trying to get help is like nailing jelly to a wall due to ignorance, lack of resources or lack of training in medical staff.

People like to talk about menopause being natural or ‘well I suffered through it why can’t you’ but that’s not good enough. We need more meno specialists in GP surgeries, more education on the shifts years before menopause and the impact on MH as well as the links between hormonal shifts and neurodiversity.

Didn’t the police openly say they believed there was a serial killer in Ipswich in the 2000s? He was killing prostitutes. One prostitute was interviewed on the news about it and sadly she ended up being another victim.
ETA the Suffolk strangler - he killed 5 women and there was huge publicity about it before he was caught

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/08/2025 19:25

The probability of a police conspiracy to mislead the public over the danger posed by a serial killer about whom they know seems to me to be exceedingly remote. Contrary to what people seem to think, the police on the whole are not in favour of random murders happening on their patch.

Quite the opposite. I remember clearly that when the first woman went missing the police weren’t really interested, as she was a known sex worker and substance abuser. It was only because her friends and family pushed it that there was any sort of campaign about her going missing. It was quite far down the line before they thought it could be a serial killer.

Ah didn’t realise it took a while to reach the news. I do remember a fair amount of coverage once it did hit the news. I googled and one of the victims was interviewed by Anglia News and said she had to keep working as she needed the money. 😢 The life stories behind the victims was so sad
