Is there a serial killer in the UK?

I don't know what to think. It is social media, after all. But . . .

I've seen quite a few TikTok videos recently, all listing a large number of female deaths, all being found in or near a body of water (river, canal, lake). And all ruled as "not suspicious" by the police, even before toxicology reports have been released (if they are even released).

The first video I saw listed 14 women over a period of 30 months, but some comments were saying that there have been other deaths which haven't been reported on. Other videos mention different women.

These deaths are over the country, leading to speculation that it could be a lorry driver.

Does it seem likely, or is this the latest SM scare?

There are probably lots of them in the UK but what you are looking at is nonsense

CallMeFlo · 24/07/2025 13:41

We're not just going to jump in a river and hope

Yet many do. Thankfully you didnt but its a more common method than you'd think

It would be a very strange MO for a serial killer. He'd need to pick a body of water then wait until there was noone around other than his potential female victim.

Pushing her in the river wouldn't necessarily cause her to drown so how does he ensure she does. He cant hot her over the head to make her unconcious. Theyd find that injury in the PM. Does he get in the river with her and hold her under water til she drowns? All that takes time. And still there would need to be absolutely noone around to see what was happening. And no reports on camera or from eye witnesses about a man in wet clothes.

Why do people actually want a serial killer? more drama?

On average 400 people drown in the UK every year, nothing unusual to see here.

There are just shy of 4,500 'unidentified doe' cases in the UK, most are actually male and quite a large number of them drowned, it both a common accident and common form of suicide and its probably the second most common cause of 'doe' deaths after 'railway' deaths.

There are probably several serial killers in the UK.

The most intelligent ones won't be leaving a clearly identifiable pattern behind them and hence remain at large. Only the stupid or very unlucky ones will be caught.

Out of all of the unsolved UK murders in the past 50 years I bet there are loads that were linked, we just don't know it. And probably never will.

FloofyBird · 24/07/2025 13:44

I remember a spate of women being found dead in water a couple of years ago whom didn't appear suicidal beforehand. I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything but families seem shocked and it seemed odd and out of character for them and this question was raised then. Who knows though! I mean they usually get a fair few deaths under their collar before anyone realises it's a serial killer. On the other hand it could be coincidental.

Yes, so boring that a woman has killed herself or slipped. Wouldn’t it be better if she’d suffered the terror of being abducted and murdered?

NigelPonsonbySmallpiece · 24/07/2025 13:46

There’s always at least one on the go I reckon. However I also don’t think the cases mentioned in the OP are serial killer related.

orangedream · 24/07/2025 13:46

I'd presume there are a number of active serial killers in the UK at any given time.

ThatCyanCat · 24/07/2025 13:48

Use TikTok for funny cat videos and makeup tutorials and absolutely nothing else.

housethatbuiltme · 24/07/2025 13:48

Also my family worked in construction, you would be AMAZED the amount of idiots that go swimming in industrial sites during heat waves.

Every year there where deaths, commonly people get tangled in wires, waste rubble and plant growth under the water in ponds/lake that form in excavated holes. Some councils/companies even have to actively dye quarry lakes black to discourage people from swimming because the fences and signs don't stop them.

Robin67 · 24/07/2025 13:50

As you have eluded to in your first paragraph. SM is hardly a place for reliable information

Not seeming suicidal isn’t always a good indicator. Many people are suicidal and don’t let on. But also the serial killer theory is a rubbish one because the examples given are far from one another geographically. Lancashire, Cheshire, Glasgow. What person will have the detailed knowledge of so many areas and the ability to lie in wait for a victim? Most of the serial killings in this country have always been geographically proximate - eg Moors Murderers (used local locations), the Wests (their own home), Yorkshire Ripper (all fairly close to home in areas he knew well), Ipswich killer (all in Ipswich near where he lived).

A few years ago it was all about the Manchester canal killer that targeted young gay men.

There will always be blobs in data, and the media will always report on what interests people, social media will drive more content that you pay attention to. So this is a self fulfilling situation, created by you.

However there will be active serial killers in the uk. Obviously. As well as a far higher number of men with poor impulse control killing women fairly regularly who are far more of a risk to an average woman than a serial killer.

The ‘Manchester Pusher’ story was started by some idiot journalist trying to make a story when there wasn’t one. The Manchester Pusher wasn’t allegedly targeting gay men it was everyone. Journalist went to see a criminologist at Birmingham Uni and gave a number deaths by people who had ended up in the water in Greater Manchester and criminologist came to the conclusion that it was statistically significant and unlikely all the deaths were deliberate or accidental. Greater Manchester Police went on the investigate after a lot of media pressure and the keyboard warriors. It then turned out the criminologist thought the figures quoted were for the City of Manchester obviously a much smaller area than Greater Manchester which includes the surrounding towns such as Bolton, Stockport, Oldham etc etc. Criminologist then armed with accurate information revised his opinion and said the number of water related deaths was as expected for an area of that size. Also it was pointed out if there was a prolific pusher statistically at least one person would have survived to tell the tale but they didn’t find anyone.

HurdyGurdy19 · 24/07/2025 13:51

Fair enough. It is, as I suspected, the latest armchair detective fantasy on SM.

I will continue to watch videos of funny babies, funny animals, birds of prey centres, animal rescue centres, and gardening, and hope that by scrolling quickly past, the algorithm will stop putting this content on my FYP

As for the question of 'a serial killer' in general (utterly nothing to do with these women in water) yes, there will probably be several as theres 68 million people and some of them will be killers.

Historically there is about 180 record serial killers in the UK but those are 'known' ones and some can date back over 100 years.

Malaco · 24/07/2025 13:53

There may well be a serial killer in the UK. There have been before, so unlikely it would never happen again. I don't know if these water deaths are linked to one though. We know people get away with murder. Ian Stewart completely got away with killing his first wife, until he killed his next wife too, who was a famous children's author.

coxesorangepippin · 24/07/2025 13:57

I would imagine so, yes

Owl55 · 24/07/2025 13:58

I read the suggestion today that there could be a serial killer around . I think it’s unlikely to be true but there are a lot of women who are struggling with their family life , responsibilities , relationships and depression. Many must be hiding it well and / or not getting the help they need . It’s so sad , please talk to someone ❤️

DorothyWainwright · 24/07/2025 14:01

I have never even been on stupid tictok but I've wondered the same thing.

Mental health has always been shit. Maybe it's increased reporting of the crimes. I don't know.

Bloozie · 24/07/2025 13:56

Stephanie Davies, the author of this report from the article, has now been fired from the police for her stupid serial killer theory which has no basis in reality. She has a Twitter account where she calls herself Voice4TheDead. I’d treat anything she says with extreme scepticism.

TheBuffetInspector · 24/07/2025 14:05

Harold Shipman...

Not luring women to rivers and pushing them in.

A complete system failure. Not even hiding in plain sight.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/07/2025 14:05

My question would be "This is highlighting the deaths of women near or in bodies of water; how many men have died near or in bodies of water during the same period?"

gotellsomeone · 24/07/2025 14:06

It’s very likely that there are several serial killers living in the uk currently.

And of course the police would cover it up that they suspected until they caught them. Look at how people are reacting currently, mass hysteria and arm chair detectives would go crazy if it was officially released that they believed there was a active serial killer drowning women in lakes but that they had no leads or suspects, it would derail any investigation and force the killer undergroud
