Both found guilty of manslaughter.

Thank goodness.

Reading the articles it seems her behavior in court was utterly appalling.

I followed the last trial via a couple of podcasts and listened to a lot of the evidence. I don't think Constance was a victim of coercion at all. I think she was a very paranoid, very arrogant and entitled woman with a personality disorder and some very toxic beliefs. As a social worker I've met a handful of women like Constance and they are very damaged and very dangerous people. That doesn't mean she wasn't abused by Mark Gordon, I'm sure she was, but she wasn't with him because of trauma bonding or lack of other options. He and their 'lifestyle' was her identity. She wasn't a fully willing participant in her life. Very sad for those children, all of them.

ETA I have read the post above about him throwing her out of the window - I didn't know that, so when I said 'I'm sure she was' I was speculating without facts. Clearly she was a victim of his abusive behaviour. But that doesn't change the fact that she was a willing participant in her life. She chose to be with him. Everything in her testimony and behaviour demonstrates that she didn't live in the real world at all.

“Gordon was jailed for 40 years, serving half of that in the US before being deported back to the UK.

When he was sentenced for both attacks, the rape victim pleaded with a judge to never let him free saying: ‘I ask you to make sure that this man does not have the opportunity to destroy any more lives.
‘Someone who is capable of doing this, a cruel calculated act at this age is not going to get better. He is only going to do more harm in society.’

He hid his appalling criminal history from Marten when they met in 2016, keeping it secret until after they had a spiritual marriage in Peru and had their first child together.

It wasn't until he assaulted two police officers in hospital after Marten gave birth under a false name that she learnt he was a violent rapist considered at 'high risk' of reoffending.

Gordon later attacked Marten when she was pregnant with their third child, throwing her out of their flat window and sending her plunging 18ft to the ground, hitting a car on the way.

As she lay screaming in agony with a shattered spleen and internal bleeding, putting her life and her unborn child at risk, Gordon didn't call an ambulance and attempted to delay paramedics alerted by concerned neighbours.

Marten would spend the next eight days in hospital recovering from surgery, but Gordon demanded she should be discharged despite doctors warning this would put her life at risk.

The domestic abuse was the catalyst for a family court judge to rule their four older children should be taken into care for their own protection from a ‘violent sex offender’ whose actions had ‘put her life and the life of their unborn child at serious risk’.

Two years before the death of Victoria, District Judge Madeleine Reardon warned: ‘It is much more likely than not that in the foreseeable future the children will be exposed to serious physical violence between their parents.”

What a nasty piece of shit that man is!!!!
He's so dangerous and arrogant!
He needs to be permanently incarcerated and should have been a long time ago.
Poor tiny baby 😔

I take it back. Despite his violence, family court described her as the dominant personality. What an appalling couple.

I wouldn’t take much notice of family courts having witnessed first hand so often women being blamed in DV situations when it was not their fault.

FlamingoFloss · 14/07/2025 16:25

Their actions led to that little one’s death. What kind of parent does this? And already having had their previous four children removed from their care. It’s actually not easy for children to be removed so they clearly are not fit to be parents and this has absolutely proved SS were correct in doing so.

RIP little Victoria

Did you follow any of the previous trial?

itsgivingenglishteacher · 14/07/2025 14:53

Struggling to feel any sympathy for her but I agree. In the news released today, the reason their other children were taken away from them
is because he threw her, pregnant, out of a window from 18ft up. And she stayed. Which would indicate serious mental health difficulties and/or coercive control.

Exactly but why did she have legal aid ??

CremeEggThief · 14/07/2025 16:32

The right result.

I know it's not really a nice thing to say or even think, but if only Constance could have been talked into long-term contraception at the very very least. Five poor babies, and one no longer here.😥

Presumably because she couldn't afford a lawyer?

My goodness that's shocking and horrific. Marten should get a lesser sentence if this is taken into account. She seems totally in thrall with him though. Certainly if she did leave him he could well have murdered her and possibly any child left in her care - no wonder they were removed.

But she chose to remain with him, she knew that choice would result in the removal of her children. Many victims of domestic abuse don't have a choice (or feel they don't) and are trapped by circumstances but Constance wasn't trapped by poverty, she had money, she had a family who almost certainly would have welcomed her back into the fold (so long as she didn't have him with her).

There's a lot of wealthy women who are victims of shocking domestic abuse.

Some of it is in here. She complained about long days and her 'cold' prison cell. Wouldn't attend court. Refused to stand to hear the verdict.

I've no sympathy for this woman at all. She's a spoilt brat who wanted to prove something and her daughter has paid for that with her life. At no point in this trial has she shown any fear of Gordon, only absolute disregard for any professionals around her. Lawyers are reported to have been relieved when she sacked them.

This is not a woman who wanted help.

Constance Marten and Mark Gordon guilty of gross negligence manslaughter over baby's death

Victoria's body was found in a shopping bag in a Brighton allotment shed in March 2023, two months after the couple went on the run.

Why should she? She chose to stay. Under no duress at all. She chose to have another baby. She chose to allow her baby to die of neglect.

At some point you have to judge people for their own actions. She has shown no emotion for Victoria at all.

Her words today? 'its a scam'.

He's a disgrace. She's a disgrace. They are both responsible for the death of their daughter

Wow I missed that. Does she have access to it? I would have thought if she did they wouldn't have been living in such awful conditions.

@placemats Not sure why you feel the need to be so uppity or passive aggressive? i disagree she should have a lesser sentence as they are both equally responsible.

What is it about the sacking of lawyers? How is this a thing?

Can see do this on legal aid?
