Watching an advert for a shower gel for 'people who don't lotion every day' Who actually has the time to lotion everyday?

As I say - DH & me wondering who has the time & energy to put body lotion on every day, unless they have particularly dry skin, eczema etc?

Yes I will put body lotion on after a day in the sun when on holiday or on parts of my body if they're looking or feeling dry (my shins often get dry & flaky), always put SPF30 moisturiser on my face & neck, but other than that I neither have the time or inclination.

Am I unusual?

It's a battle I face. Skin gets dry, so put snething on, and then half the time it HURTS. Like stingy, skin on fire, tears in eyes hurts. Why would I potentially subject myself to that more often than required?

So, no. I don't put on lotion very often!

Ladaha · 06/07/2025 07:39

@Extiainoiapeial it is just possible, if you can entertain this for a wild moment, that other people are different to you. That is that they are not lying but just having a different experience.

I think if people used soap or a Dove bar instead of highly perfumed shower gels full of chemicals they'd not find their skin was tight and itchy after a shower and they wouldn't need to lotion as a verb every day.

I once used dove soap when staying at my mums, my skin was visibly grey after drying and before using lotion.

I feel so much better with it on, but I don’t have time! I am usually rushing to get ready for work or have a small child needing my attention.

One day I will have lovely soft skin again!

Boredlass · 06/07/2025 08:08

I’ve never done it. We put far too much chemicals on our bodies as it is

What's with 20 minutes waiting for it to sink in?!
A quick dry after a shower, a big dollop of body cream on my hand, put a bit of the dollop on legs, arms, chest, shoulders, rub rub rub and that's it! Honestly just one minute. Deodorant and get dressed

Unless you are using something incredibly greasy or oily there is no waiting for it to sink in for 20 minutes! I did a pic to one of my favourite ones above. However I do have about four or five different ones I use, a couple of luxury ones that smell divine, I prefer that to perfume to be honest

Well in nearly 50 years this is my experience. With various lotions I’ve tried out. It takes ages to sink in. I hate the feeling of having clothes stuck to me and I certainly don’t like the feeling of greasy bedsheets. You don’t have to believe me of course 🤷‍♀️

I use lotion after every shower, so almost every day. Takes about a minute and I do it while my hair is in a towel drying.

canyon2000 · 06/07/2025 07:27

Maybe you are putting too much on. Moisturiser shouldn't take ages to soak in.

Well it does, on me. For that reason I am always very sparing about how much I use.

Clearly I have the kind of skin that doesn’t need to absorb it like a sponge.

Wethers121 · 06/07/2025 08:15

I never put lotion on my body but have very naturally soft skin and it doesn’t get dry.

Lotion shouldn't hurt like that unless you're using the wrong lotion or you have irritated/broken skin. I speak as someone who has had this exact reaction to lotion previously. Took me a while to find a lotion that works for me, and to realise that moisturising more often meant my skin wasn't irritated.
I would try something simple like E45 cream or Palmer's cocoa butter if you haven't already.

I am not forcing anyone to use body lotion! No need to be snippy!

Housewife2010 · 06/07/2025 08:24

I've done it after every bath/shower since I was about 12. I have gloriously soft skin.

crazycatladie · 06/07/2025 08:31

Very rarely use it. I feel sweaty if I do.

WingBingo · 06/07/2025 08:32

Everyday more after I have soaped. With actual soap bars.

I love the smell. I use Bum Bum cream and it’s amazing.

Isthisreasonable · 06/07/2025 08:34

Can't remember the last time I applied lotion to more than my face. I don't have dry skin.

SisterTeatime · 06/07/2025 08:39

I do find it takes quite a while to sink in on the bits of me I don’t do often - basically the bits that are never exposed to the sun. Maybe it is a skin difference. If I used shower gel/soap all over I’d need ‘to lotion’ them though.

I think there is something in the argument about not putting too many different products on your skin, and I do try to keep everything fairly plain, but as spf is the one with all the nano particles I try not to overthink it

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/07/2025 08:40

I always moisturise my arms and legs after a shower, otherwise my legs in particular would resemble a prehistoric scaly lizard.

Dh never uses any and his skin is like a baby’s bottom. It’s not fair!

BTW the use of ‘lotion’ as a verb in the ad really irritates me, but apparently it’s officially permitted. Not that I’ve ever heard anyone use it as a verb in RL….

Foodoverload · 06/07/2025 08:48

I do after each shower. It’s something I have done since early teens. My mum always said take care of your skin. Whole body. I use Nivea so soft. I used expensive and cheap. This just works and takes 2 mins.

MulberryPeony · 06/07/2025 08:48

Rarely. Soft water area and I don’t often get dry skin so don’t often feel the need. Since peri my legs have been itchy though so I did moisturise yesterday.

I’m honestly as surprised as you OP - I’ve put countless body lotions in the charity bags over the years wonder why gift sets come with it at all.

I moisturise every single day but still put the ones that come in gift sets in the charity bag. Mainly because they’re not one I’d actually choose to use myself. I have a couple of favourites and they’re more ‘luxury’ type products. I wouldn’t bother with a Bayliss and Harding one or something similar.

SpacedOutOut · 06/07/2025 09:00

I shower every morning and bath most evenings and moisturise almost every time. It’s part of my routine now so don’t even think about it. Takes a couple of minutes.

lottiegarbanzo · 06/07/2025 09:00

This is capitalism 101 OP. In order for the economy to expand, companies have to persuade you to buy new stuff that you didn’t know you needed (because you don’t).

Some of us know we don’t need it, but do it because we like it. It’s a small moment of self care for me in a fairly stressful life caring for my disabled child full time, and I take pleasure from it. Many, many people spend money on things that they don’t need, they just want, because it gives them pleasure.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 06/07/2025 09:12

I don't use it as I'm prone to contact dermatitis and work outside - the mix of sweat and lotion brings me out in a nasty rash.

OldWomanInACardigan · 06/07/2025 09:16

I have a shower every morning, and put lotion on my arms and legs every day (not my body, though, it doesn't need it))
