Watching an advert for a shower gel for 'people who don't lotion every day' Who actually has the time to lotion everyday?

As I say - DH & me wondering who has the time & energy to put body lotion on every day, unless they have particularly dry skin, eczema etc?

Yes I will put body lotion on after a day in the sun when on holiday or on parts of my body if they're looking or feeling dry (my shins often get dry & flaky), always put SPF30 moisturiser on my face & neck, but other than that I neither have the time or inclination.

Am I unusual?

I use it every day. It makes my skin feel lovely and I like the smell. I don’t find it an arduous task - it doesn’t take long, maybe a minute or two. I don’t spend ages getting my nails done or having my eyebrows artfully arranged by a professional or spending hours at the gym, so as time budgeting goes for self care, it’s not a biggy.

Notstrongandstable · 05/07/2025 16:41

I do after every shower, it literally takes 60 seconds!

Why not soap?!

If I was really dirty I would, but it strips the oil from your skin so if water's enough that's all I use. It also destroys the natural skin biome. My skin seems OK - not too oily, not too dry, not smelly!
And what's the point of covering yourself with a load of strange chemicals if you don't need to?

I’ve always used Nivea body moisturiser daily after a shower, on about a third of my body. You can see how much good it does as the skin on those bits looks a lot younger (especially boobs!).

Can't stand that ad. Lotion is a noun, not a verb.
How hard is it to say 'use lotion'?
I mean, do you toothpaste everyday? Lipstick every day? (For example.)
Pah. Grumbles off to pedants' corner.

THANK YOU!

Who actually has the time to lotion everyday?

Me.

Weepixie · 05/07/2025 16:48

I’ve been doing it everyday now for a couple of months. It’s making my 67 year old skin look much nicer and I wish I’d been doing it for decades.

Poonu · 05/07/2025 16:49

I do daily.
It makes me chuckle when people say they're too busy. Who is not busy? Everyone's busy.

xWildFlowerx · 05/07/2025 16:49

Me, it literally takes like 1 minute? I use it cause shaving makes my skin drier, and also I have stretch marks from pregnancy which get really dry.

DH also uses it every time he washes cause he's black. Same for kids who are half black/white, their skin will look dry without it.

OMGitsnotgood · 05/07/2025 16:50

I use body lotion after a shower, it really only takes two minutes. And again just before bed, again another couple of minutes. I’m rarely so busy I can’t afford 4-5 mins a day.

YoureGreeeeeeatttttttt · 05/07/2025 16:52

I use Moogoo moisturiser everyday. Sorted out my eczema.

Waitingfordoggo · 05/07/2025 16:53

I hardly ever do it. I probably should cause my skin looks better after but I just can’t be arsed. I find any sort of beauty rituals very tiresome. I do shower regularly and brush and floss my teeth but that’s about all I can be bothered with.

Fiery30 · 05/07/2025 16:53

It's hardly a chore. Takes about a minute to apply lotion. Why is it such a shock?

You could have done your legs at least in the time it's taken you to discuss it with your DH, write this thread and read the responses to it.

But why would she??

dunroamingfornow · 05/07/2025 16:56

Some skin needs daily moisturising. Mine does, it takes about 2 mins. Done it all my life as do most of my family

Waitingfordoggo · 05/07/2025 16:57

Applying lotion doesn’t take long but then I can’t get dressed for a while because I really dislike the feel of putting clothes onto skin that isn’t completely dry. So that takes a while and what are you supposed to do while you’re standing around naked waiting for it to soak in?

Whatever you want! I do my hair and make up in my underwear anyway. So moisturise, bra and pants on, do my hair and make up, then it’s soaked in enough to put my clothes on.

Whatshesaid96 · 05/07/2025 16:59

Pre kids I had a good routine of gym, shower, moisturise, pack my work stuff and go every morning. Post kids I shower in the evening once they've gone to bed. By this point I just want to flop in bed and go to sleep myself. I try and moisturise every 2/3 days now. I suffer with dry skin so I should keep on top of it better.

Never used soap - my mother always said that soap dries your skin out which is true.

It also leaves a scum on the shower. I have shower gel- supermarket own brand similar to the one that's advertised & DH has his Lynx.

My DS had eczema as a small child & I used to use the herb soapwort (I grew it in the garden) on his skin. Boiled it up, put it into a container & was fabulous for him.

You're using the wrong soap then. Shower gel is not really skin friendly

BeyondMyWits · 05/07/2025 17:00

Nope, I'm another who thinks - the more you use it, the more you end up needing it. Like lip balm too. My skin is fine, keeps my insides in and the outside out, not oily, not dry.

No wonder people need to spend so long in the shower, washing off the old, stale moisturiser.

midgetastic · 05/07/2025 17:00

as op says - unless you have a problem who would need to apply moisturiser anyway?it is such a strange concept but each to their own

Livpool · 05/07/2025 17:01

I do - it takes a couple of minutes

LittlleMy · 05/07/2025 17:01

I use it every time after having a shower. I get yucky dry flakes on my lower legs if I don’t and as I was doing the, I thought I’d just do the rest of my body also. My ex would constantly go on about the smoothness of my skin (had been years since my last relationship and I was 50 then) every time we were intimate which was a nice benefit fir him I guess! But the reality is that I know I’ll get icky itchy eventually if I don’t. It is a pain in the butt to do though - especially of a winter morning. I also keep a moisture spray specially to spritz after showers if I’m really low on time or feel lazy!

Jobwelldone · 05/07/2025 17:02

I got out of the habit of moisturising during peri menopause when my whole body became so itchy & had large patches of eczema (one of many many symptoms)

As a result, my skin sorted of ‘righted’ itself so doesn’t particularly need it.

That said, I do moisturise about once a week because it feels & smells nice.

Livpool · 05/07/2025 17:02

I have very dry skin so need it - if you don’t then obviously don’t use it!
