Watching an advert for a shower gel for 'people who don't lotion every day' Who actually has the time to lotion everyday?

As I say - DH & me wondering who has the time & energy to put body lotion on every day, unless they have particularly dry skin, eczema etc?

Yes I will put body lotion on after a day in the sun when on holiday or on parts of my body if they're looking or feeling dry (my shins often get dry & flaky), always put SPF30 moisturiser on my face & neck, but other than that I neither have the time or inclination.

Am I unusual?

Every time. I also put on makeup everyday. I see this as self care. My body does a lot for me so I want to look after it.

never used body lotion in my life. This is another of these things that women conspire to convince other women is somehow necessary. Do men die from lack of body lotion, or even struggle with dry skin?

Have you seen some men’s legs and feet?! More could do with finding the body lotion

I do have terriblly dry skin and eczema so I have to. I have always thought anyone who didn't would have a much quicker routine as it is time consuming to a certain extent. I suppose just one of these things that you get used to and it doesn't feel a chore.

I do envy those, like dh l, who can shower and never have to moisturise. I'd be a flaky, itchy, red mess with sores. And of course, it can only be certain things I can use. Nothing nice smelling, and in fact for decades I had the same emollient prescribed by the gp. I just buy it now.

I know I'm not your target audience for this but its quite nice to be seen that it is actually a bit of a pain to do every day (or sometimes a few times a day)

You may envy me for not having to use body lotion but spare a thought for me as I can’t play the game where you put Post-Its on your forehead and guess the person as mine gets so oily they slide off 😂 My children think it’s hilarious.

I do. Every single day for over 40 years, well maybe not if I was ever unwell but that would be rare.

Aintgointogoa · 05/07/2025 21:40

I do have dry skin but have never thought twice about the time it takes to apply. It's routine, like putting sunscreen on. I make my own body butter as well, and that needs some extra time to really sink in so will use only if I don't have to go straight out. It's lovely ! I spent some time in UK recently, had forgotten how HARD the water is (London), none of my usual cream care seemed sufficient ! Cue big spree in Boots which will now take me forever to use up 🤭

I have time but rarely actually do it because every type of lotion or moisturiser just seems to sit on my skin for ages - I need to stand rubbing it in for at least 10 minutes or I leave a trail of it everywhere, or it coat the inside of my clothes so I feel greasy all day. I can’t be the only one who finds products just sit on the top of my skin rather than sinking in, but it certainly looks like it from this thread! I do tend towards oily hair and skin though (thankfully calming down now I’m in my 30s)

Same as me. I hate the sticky feeling, especially when you get into bed.

Only things I do like if you ever feel like it are clarins - body oils (will still want half an hour before bed), bust lotion and body partner. I'm 7 months pregnant so I really need to start using stuff 😬 no new stretch marks yet but will probably wake up one morning looking like a tiger

BashfulClam · 05/07/2025 21:40

I put palmers oil on my damp skin as soon as I get out the shower then use my towel to take off any excess before I get dressed. My skin has a nice glow.

Darkling1 · 05/07/2025 21:40

I’ve only started using body lotion in recent weeks! I use it every other day now. My skin feels better. I use shower oil too.

I use facial moisturiser twice a day and SPF daily for years.

spoonbillstretford · 05/07/2025 21:45

I don't, no. Probably once a week usually, only more on holiday when I've been in the sun/sea.

I used to shower every day until my skin got dry when pregnant and the midwife suggested every ither day would be better. Since then (20 years ago) I try and miss a couple of days in seven at least.

My skin is really good, moist, smooth and soft and I'm 49 and at menopause.

Imaybeoldbutstillrandy · 05/07/2025 22:11

I put body lotion after my shower this evening. Took about 5 minutes before it soaked in & most of it came off onto my dressing gown. Can't be arsed with it TBH.

The neutrogena spray one is v quick, sanctuary wet skin that you apply in the shower and Vaseline gluta hya is my new favourite

Extiainoiapeial · 05/07/2025 22:15

I spend literally minutes in the shower and barely minutes moisturising with body lotion
I rub it in quickly and despite being ancient my skin is really good. Smooth and moisturised. Not wrinkly
I hate dry skin.
I've done this for literally decades and it pays off
Takes no time

Minorities 😭

Don’t bother then, no one is really fussed whether you use it or not! I use it because I like it. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t bother.

I think you're using the wrong type of body lotion!

I can recommend this from super drug

I don't understand the obsession. I use it occasionally but I don’t really like the sticky feeling until it’s all gone. Especially on my hands because I can’t do anything then. I don’t feel like my skin is dry? I don’t even use anything on my face apart from a gentle scrub wash.

GameOfJones · 05/07/2025 22:28

I never used to but then about 5 years ago I started applying body lotion after I was given a nice smelling one for Christmas. I now use lotion after every bath or shower because I like the way it smells and feels. DH comments on how soft my skin is and I do think it makes a difference.

I'm an evening washer so I whack on some body lotion when I get out of the shower and then get straight into pyjamas. It probably adds a minute to my routine. I tend to use the Champneys body balm because it makes my skin smell amazing for ages.

If I really can't be arsed I've now got the wet skin moisturiser from Sanctuary in my shower cubicle and that's even easier and probably adds 30 seconds maximum. You finish your shower, turn the water off and while you're still soaking wet you apply it to the skin. Then I step out of the shower and towel dry as normal. I was wholly unconvinced that it would work but it absolutely does.

SisterTeatime · 05/07/2025 22:29

I do lower legs, arms and décolletage with dry oil and/or a plain moisturiser. It’s very quick. The rest of me gets done very rarely, my skin is healthy and soft. I shower frequently, use shower gel quite sparingly on my pits and bits only, and always finish my shower on cold. I do give my feet quite a lot of tlc though.

okydokethen · 05/07/2025 22:30

I didn’t know so many people did this! I’ve really tried this year, so now do so after almost every shower and use Vaseline Spf30 moisturiser (murad factor 45 on face)

I do full body 2/3 times per week , I moisturise my face , neck, arms & boobs every day & my hands several times p/day & never go to bed without without putting on hand cream , neck & hands first to show age ..
I’m 49 & I have to say I have lovely hands 😂

GameOfJones · 05/07/2025 22:39

I can understand not liking the feel of it but I really don't get the time argument. I am usually in and out of the shower, have applied my body lotion and brushed my teeth in under 10 minutes.

BarbaraVineFan · 05/07/2025 22:41

‘to lotion’ ARGHHHH

can’t stand everything becoming a verb!! I have only just got used to athletes ‘medalling’ all over the place and now this 😭

I’m going to try this one when I’ve used up my other lotions. I love their shower oil.

I do, takes minutes

justtootiredtoday · 05/07/2025 23:01

There was a thread like this a while back and I was surprised at how many people were moisturising their whole body every day.

And it looks like this one is going the same way.

I’m with you @Imaybeoldbutstillrandy, it’s just not something I’ve ever really done and I didn’t realise so many people did.
