What’s the most controversial opinion you hold?

NC28 · 28/06/2025 19:58

Do you want to share any opinions you have that are (or may be) seen as controversial?

Mine are probably around the severity of criminal punishment the courts should be giving out for certain crimes and what kids should do in the event of physical violence from peers. Both subjects can be quite provoking for others.

What are yours?

Prison is the wrong choice for a significant number of crimes.

Also, when someone has served their 'time', they shouldn't have to declare it any further. (This one I have some caveats for but the general principle I stand by).

I also agree with this one!

Mumofteenandtween · 28/06/2025 20:15

I was going to say “women don’t have penises” was my most controversial. But on reading the above I guess it might be “I breastfed my son until he was nearly 5 and I don’t think that it is a particularly big deal.”

No judgement or hate just genuinely curious.. did his friends/school peers know and did he suffer because of this? I'm curious if he will remember feeding to such a late age and how that could impact him.

CaptainJason · 28/06/2025 20:26

@dynamiccactus my four month old has a tooth!

Pricelessadvice · 28/06/2025 20:26

CaptainJason · 28/06/2025 20:10

Can I ask why? Not having a go, just genuinely curious! I can kind of see an argument for stopping at a year, but not sure I understand the six month cut off!

I just think that once they are eating solids, breastfeeding is sort of redundant. Though I appreciate some babies may take a bit longer.
I think after 1 year is definitely the absolute cut off.

Mares generally start kicking their foals off them once they get fed up of them and they are able to eat.
Though I’m not suggesting we start kicking babies 🤣

dynamiccactus · 28/06/2025 20:26

On the breastfeeding and WHO guidelines I don't know if I support WHO guidelines. I suspect they are more than a bit sexist and aimed at making sure women are the primary care-givers to benefit men.

JustAnInchident · 28/06/2025 20:27

IceColdFanta · 28/06/2025 20:19

I judge women that have kids with more than one man sorry but I just can’t help it! You don’t have to have kids with everyone you meet.

This but definitely not just women, men too. Anyone who has kids with more than one partner. Personally I believe it to always be on the spectrum of shit for the first partners child/children.
Possibly more so men actually as they tend not to be the primary caregivers and so just skip off to make a new shiny family elsewhere and leave the og kids for dust.

arcticpandas · 28/06/2025 20:27

NarnianQueen · 28/06/2025 20:14

My controversial opinion is that people who think there should be an arbitrary age limit on breastfeeding (that bears no relation to the recommended guidelines across the WHO) do so because they find it impossible to separate in their minds from a sexual act, otherwise why would it matter? 😂

The WHO's recommandation of 2 years is for children in developing countries.

Womblingmerrily · 28/06/2025 20:27

Animals do not belong to people. Removing them from their families causes them harm, which is why they spend time crying for them, only stopping when they give up hope and instead attach themselves to the human who has made them suffer in this way because 'I want a pet'

Ceramiq · 28/06/2025 20:27

Ethnic differences are real

@dynamiccactus my four month old has a tooth!

My ds was about 4 months old when I stopped. though he didn't have any teeth until later. But I was useless at making enough milk from the word go so finally gave up at that point.

Nitgel · 28/06/2025 20:27

All kids should attend a local school that they can walk to

SquashMeDown · 28/06/2025 20:27

Humans can’t change sex - literal violence since 2014.

Too many humans are happy to stick with the societal status quo even though it’s hurting loads of people. It’s all a bit “I’m alright Jack” at the moment and it’s shit.

IceColdFanta · 28/06/2025 20:28

dynamiccactus · 28/06/2025 20:24

I think that very much depends on the circumstances! Are you saying that if a woman's husband dies, she can never have another child with anyone else?

Or if she was raped the first time, she can't have children with someone she actually loves?

my opinion and i won’t change it, you don’t have to have kids with every man

mylovedoesitgood · 28/06/2025 20:28

Dickhead adults who ride their bikes on pavements should have their bikes taken away or at least fined. Boo fucking hoo you numptie that you feel too nervous to rude on the road.

Any guy who says The Shawshank Redemption is his favourite film is an absolute bell end. It immediately puts me off.

Interesting…why?

Yes animals are removed from their mother far too soon. It must be cruel for the mothers too when their babies are suddenly taken away.

PothasProblem · 28/06/2025 20:28

SunMootStars · 28/06/2025 20:12

Having a pet animal living with you in your home is weird. I love animals, I really do, but I believe they should live outdoors. I’ve never met anyone who agrees.

I agree with you.

Women don’t have penises. Ever.

That's just a fact. The world's gone nuts when that's seen as controversial.

I have a much bigger problem with cars on pavements.

BearPear · 28/06/2025 20:14

After working nearly 40 years in the welfare/benefits sector I can say that there’s a significant proportion of people for whom not working is a choice. There are families where they are on to second generation of non-workers. Very sad to see, and it definitely grinds you down dealing with how entrenched it is.

How to people stay on benefits now though? I thought that with job coaches, interviews and sanctions it’s not possible to sit on the dole these days.

HappiestSleeping · 28/06/2025 20:29

That Fox's Golden Crunch Creams are a complete food source.

NC28 · 28/06/2025 20:29

arcticpandas · 28/06/2025 20:24

This is hard though because a family of refugees will immediately need state provision ; schools, health care, housing etc. And help with learning the language before the adults can work (well, let's be honest, before the husband can work).

That’s fair enough, I meant along the lines of chosen movement for a job/lifestyle choice etc. You’re right with your example there.

The swathes of economic illegal migrants needs to be stopped. Starmer should admit cancelling the Rwanda flights was a giant mistake.

Also we should stop paying the french to stop the boats when they clearly aren't going to because they don't want them either.

Agree re prisons above. I don't think it's particularly controversial, it's common sense.

Oh, and for weeks a year, no travel, no cars, factories, everything stops. The earth can breathe.

And turn the fucking Internet off.

CanadianJohn · 28/06/2025 20:29

A while ago, on a similar thread, I posted my controversial opinion, and my post was promptly deleted by admin. So, I guess I'll stay quiet. It's the "mum" part of Mumsnet.😶

Personally I judge women more however I don’t vocalise this and this is just me admitting it for the purpose of this thread irl I keep it to myself.
