What’s the most controversial opinion you hold?

Do you want to share any opinions you have that are (or may be) seen as controversial?

Mine are probably around the severity of criminal punishment the courts should be giving out for certain crimes and what kids should do in the event of physical violence from peers. Both subjects can be quite provoking for others.

What are yours?

I also believe that people (any person of any sex, nationality, ethnicity, religion or origin) who moves to the UK for any reason, should be required to pay for use of public services for a period of time.

People should be paying into the system before being allowed to take from it.

I judge women that have kids with more than one man sorry but I just can’t help it! You don’t have to have kids with everyone you meet.

That severe/profound autism should havea completely separate diagnosis to general autism (again).

Agreed.

Prisons are absolutely useless and benefit very few people in the long run, it just causes further damage and trauma.

People with mild anxiety and depression (ie able to work, able to socialise to a reasonably normal extent) get little realistic benefit from a low dose SSRI other than placebo. We should be aiming for prevention and support rather than masking it.

Putting people in psychiatric hospitals does very little to help either, it’s mostly just state sponsored supervision.

(I work in the field…)

Sometimes a psychiatric hospital is the only safe place for a person to be until stabilised. I do agree that it should be short term only though because the person risk being institutionalised just like a prisoner.

HeddaGarbled · 28/06/2025 20:22

Most female celebrities dress like hookers and they’re doing it because they’ve been brainwashed by a patriarchal society not because they’re empowered.

comoatoupeira · 28/06/2025 20:22

In most cases, it’s better for everyone to get your child into the habit of sleeping and going to sleep in their own bed and room young-ish, say round age 1.

I was going to say “women don’t have penises” was my most controversial. But on reading the above I guess it might be “I breastfed my son until he was nearly 5 and I don’t think that it is a particularly big deal.”

Me too 😂

I agree with this 100%

My controversial opinion is that people who think there should be an arbitrary age limit on breastfeeding (that bears no relation to the recommended guidelines across the WHO) do so because they find it impossible to separate in their minds from a sexual act, otherwise why would it matter? 😂

I don't see anything sexual in the act at all, regardless of age. I just look at my toddler and, to me, it would feel absolutely crazy BF him, hes like a real human with words and teeth and running around playing with snails out the garden 🤣 he doesn't need that from me anymore 🤷🏻‍♀️

Having a pet animal living with you in your home is weird. I love animals, I really do, but I believe they should live outdoors. I’ve never met anyone who agrees.

I agree - I don't think pet ownership is right (though I realise cats tend to adopt their owners rather than the other way round).

I think people who park their cars/vans on pavements should have their cars crushed.

On the breastfeeding I think you stop when your child gets teeth - at the latest.

Also agree about the planet - it won't suffer if humans die out. We are just a bink in the eye of the world's history.

Butterbeanbutterbo · 28/06/2025 20:23

Cats shouldn’t be allowed in other people’s gardens. Somehow

MakingPlans2025 · 28/06/2025 20:23

This is hard though because a family of refugees will immediately need state provision ; schools, health care, housing etc. And help with learning the language before the adults can work (well, let's be honest, before the husband can work).

Honeypleasedont · 28/06/2025 20:24

Prison is the wrong choice for a significant number of crimes.

Also, when someone has served their 'time', they shouldn't have to declare it any further. (This one I have some caveats for but the general principle I stand by).

RepoTheGeriatricOpera · 28/06/2025 20:24

Any guy who says The Shawshank Redemption is his favourite film is an absolute bell end. It immediately puts me off.

I judge women that have kids with more than one man sorry but I just can’t help it! You don’t have to have kids with everyone you meet.

I think that very much depends on the circumstances! Are you saying that if a woman's husband dies, she can never have another child with anyone else?

Or if she was raped the first time, she can't have children with someone she actually loves?

Almostwelsh · 28/06/2025 20:24

Dogs should not be kept as pets. Working dogs only. Most pet ownership is less than ideal for the animal and the pet industry encourages irresponsible breeding. I like animals, but in the wild.

IDontHateRainbows · 28/06/2025 20:25

Women in abusive relationships need to take responsibility for themselves and GTFO specially when kids are involved.

I know it's not easy to leave. I liken it to drug addiction. But no one would ever say don't tell a drug addict not to try and quit that's victim blaming.

atoo · 28/06/2025 20:17

Controversial opinion - it wouldn't really be all that bad a thing if we did completely fuck up the climate and the human population collapsed. Biodiversity will bounce back in a few million years at most.

Have you even started to consider the human suffering?

Some babies are born with teeth 😂 should they just not be breastfed at all?

Trouble is it’s safe but there’s often absolutely nothing done, other than giving medication and managing immediate risk.

A few places exist that are spot on (eg medium and high secure) but the reality is that there are many people in hospital who are honestly just languishing in a system that’s not set up to help them at all. They just bounce around the country as yet another unit says they can’t cope with them.

Not to mention the flood of young women with autism and other similar who have ended up in units hundreds of miles from home …
