Taxes to rise to fund PIP

1000 replies

Viviennemary · 27/06/2025 11:20

I just read this, Don't agree with this at all. PIP needs to be reformed. But not by introducing this two tier system. Sick of Labour already. Might have know they would revert to type. With all the infighting and disagreement so nothing ever gets done except back peddling, increased taxes and prices rises.

How about fundamental reforms? Ie. Idea 1. You can only vote if you pay tax or have paid taxes for at least 30 years of your life. Idea 2 for those who are unemployed but do not have disability or other issues, they should not get benefits if they do not take up jobs that are available and offered to them and equally if they do not turn up to jobs and do them they have their benefits removed. idea 3 do not give people cash or money but pay their benefit bills directly and give them cards to spend money only on food and necessary items at supermarkets, NOT on clothes, cigarettes and alcohol idea 4 disability card shouldn’t be fancy cars but should be normal bog standard cars that are marked as free disability cars. Idea 5 people have to pay for missed appointments at the doctors and hospitals (if on benefits the charge comes out of their benefits) idea 6 if you are on disability payments because of health issues you must be on treatment including counselling and medication

Wow. If PIP were awarded for ignorance of the reality of disability you would definitely be on the enhanced rate.

The vast majority of motability cars are normal bog standard cars. What cars do you think people are getting?

The only reason why our car isn't the bog standard type is because it's a WAV.

Do you mean they should be marked so other people know they are motability cars? Why?

Idea 1 - so only people in their late 40s and older can vote? Seems really ageist to me. People younger than that are still affected by the policies that get voted in. How about we say that anyone older than 65 is not allowed to vote seeing as they might well be dead when the policies are introduced. Nasty, yes?

Idea 2 - that already happens in the form of sanctions and is nothing new.

Idea 3 - why not clothing? It is pretty essential. I have gained weight and need new knickers. Why should I not be allowed to buy some?
Do you think people on benefits are so stupid that they can't be trusted to spend their own money?

Idea 4 - a lot of cars that people get through PIP are basic ones. The bigger and fancier ones are because they need a big car to accommodate wheelchairs etc and a winch to get it into the car. No one is getting a sports car on PIP.

Idea 5 - I do agree with that one, if there is not a decent reason though.

Idea 6 - I don't know anyone on disability benefits who is refusing treatment or meds. That is because they want their symptoms treated and to not suffer. No one can be made to take meds or have treatment against their will unless they are sectioned. The job centre staff are not medically trained and can not tell you to do certain things to help with your health conditions.

@Cornishpotato but presumably neither you nor Jeff Bezos hold your entire net worth in shares?

An annual wealth tax of 2 per cent of your wealth could of course be paid for by selling shares in your company, but most wealthy people will also have cash, property and other investments they could liquidate if necessary. If for some reason they didn't have those things, they could borrow to pay the tax.

Edited

Where to even start with that! Having to hand over 2% of your business to the taxman every year would send anybody who can move overseas.

Most businesses are not even listed on an exchange. Selling a minority stake in an unlisted business is a major ballache. Most banks do also not lend money to pay tax bills (other than IHT).

Lots of things disabled people need aren’t available at supermarkets. It’s a bit short sighted. They also need to pay for transport and support.

Medication and therapy would be okay, often it doesn’t exist. CAHMS for instance iust seems to offer CBT for everything, and that’s a massive waiting list.

OonaStubbs · 27/06/2025 23:49

PreetyinPurple · 27/06/2025 22:58

There is zero appetite for businesses to employ disabled people. I follow someone on Twitter who looks online at what fully remote jobs are available now, almost none.

I worked somewhere where a member of staff had a degenerative disease and was in a wheelchair. HR had recognised she had gotten ‘slower’ in the last year and were talking about how they could get rid. That’s the reality. No one else would take her on after that. Employers want employees who are always up to speed and don’t get sick and aren’t constantly going to appointments.
Im a carer and getting a job is almost impossible as it needs to be flexible, and no one wants to offer jobs like that.

They can cut PIP when they introduce supportive/flexible jobs as standard. So never.

Why is "they"?

I don't think PIP should be awarded for anxiety and depression. The money should be put towards better counselling services on the NHS if mental health needs to be addressed.

Tell me you've never experienced anxiety and depression without telling me you haven't.
My son has both and ptsd. He can't even fill in a form at the dentist without shaking and needs someone with him for all appointments. He's had counselling, difficult to do when he can barely leave the house.
Not everyone with these illnesses are malingerers.

I pay taxes including income tax and NI, and have done for many decades.

I receive PIP. It enables me to work.

Everyone pays taxes in some form, most commonly VAT. Indeed, lower-income individuals spend a larger proportion of their income on essential goods and services (like food, clothing, and utilities) which are subject to VAT, compared to higher-income individuals who have more disposable income to spend on non-essential items or on items that may be exempt or zero-rated.

Absolutely! Without my ADP (Sco equivalent!) I would struggle with staying in the workplace

I understand Farages idea of the one off payment. I do not agree with just handing lump sums out to people.
That’s a classic Brexit bus headliner to get votes and nothing more!

The money should go straight to the nhs and education

But the problem is that people on PIP are more likely to need to go to hospital more often PIP is used paying for travelling that a normal healthy person wouldn’t have pay, I know that I have to travel 70miles one way for a certain hospital visit then parking on top unless you have a blue badge, all adds up if you are doing this regularly.

MyNameIsX · 28/06/2025 03:28

Thinking that the (rapidly increasing) cost of PIP and number of claimants is a problem the UK needs to address doesn’t mean you hate disabled people

I didn't say OP hates disabled people.

I said OP hates disabled people who are on disability benefits. I have seen many posts from her on the subject, she is well known for it.

If you would prefer to avoid the ignominy of having your posts deleted again, I would suggest you drop the word ‘hate’ when referring to other posters.

Just because you disagree with them.

What’s this magical medication/pill I can take that will rid me of the acquired and real/quantifiable disability and chronic health condition I can take? Please let me know!
I was physically fine and then one morning in my 40’s (three years ago) I literally woke up with a disability out of the blue. It’s indiscriminate and can happen to any one of us.
My life is pretty shit now and I have to live with it every second of every waking moment until the sweet relief of death (and, believe me, I won’t mind that coming soon). But don’t worry, I’m not taking any of your money to afford myself any treatment that might make this all a bit more bearable. I still work (with massive adjustments. And minus an ability to barely look after myself/keep clean and well fed as all my energy goes on keeping my job so I can pay my bills and rent to a wealthy landlord) as I’m still not quite disabled enough/know how to work the system to get any help via PIP according to the DWP. I hope that makes you happy 😊

The ignorance surrounding this is huge!!!

Re 6- have you been living under a rock? It’s well known that MH services are dire, hugely over stretched and very unwell people are struggling to get care and treatment. It would encourage the over use of medication which autistic people are already at huge risk of. Also many people with quite severe MH difficulties have it for life. ND and its difficulties doesn’t go away( it’s a protected disability for a reason),neither does BPD and many other conditions. Having treatment to help manage symptoms doesn’t make them go away. You’re lucky to get any treatment least of all throughout life.

I have 1 kid on full PIP who has had a lot of treatment. His sibling is no less needy of treatment ( same conditions)and I have had to battle continuously for years for treatment watching him get worse. After even further deterioration he is finally getting the treatment he needs. Surely if you had to choose the untreated child would be more worthy of PIP as he has the same struggles without but without any treatment or support. I

So some people on high incomes are taking an attitude of "fuck all of you, I'm fine"? I'm shocked, SHOCKED.

That's such a reductive attitude. Why shouldn't a doctor move abroad if it means they can get on the housing ladder and have a nice quality of life?

I totally agree - we are part of the cohort of high skilled high income people that have left the UK. It wasn’t a “fuck you all” attitude in the slightest - what it came down to was paying taxes and seeing little to no benefit. My children’s school was crumbling and failing so we went private, we struggled to access NHS services, our council closed the local pool because they couldn’t afford to heat it. These are just a few of the examples which contributed to us leaving the UK.

I have life insurance / critical cover.

All kids should be covered. I’m just talking about a pp who said people with anxiety are claiming. That’s annoying to me as I have it and struggle along.

So you are able to struggle along, some people can't, it's not that difficult to understand.
We all have struggles, but some people have disabilities that mean they can't just 'struggle along'

The main reason why I claim disability benefits is due to an undiagnosed condition. One of the symptoms which was my original diagnosis is untreatable. What happens to those of us with untreatable conditions?

Oh and I had treatment for something. It's now left with me another incurable disability

Have you seen the waiting lists to just see a specialist to diagnose someone let alone treat them?

Probably because it involves a massive 14 page form with a lot of large writing boxes, a huge amount of evidence and paperwork when those in need of it are often on waiting lists and trying to juggle life with disability and very little support.
