Passport Renewal Photo - oh my god I am SO ugly!!!!

Just done my renewal online and DH has taken my photo for the renewal. Bloody hell I didn't realise how ugly I am. It was honestly a massive shock. One side of my face looks so different to the other, one eye is slightly wider, one nostril is more open than the other and I look hideous.

It has honestly knocked me for six. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Quasimodo springs to mind 😂😢

Someone say something to cheer me up!!!

I look fine in the mirror, godawful in some photos. Especially if I’m not allowed to smile.

I think that's it. I think its the forward staring blank expression face.

I have always thought of myself as 'okay looking' for my age and generally like most photos taken of me but god I looked bloody rough. 😂

Me too. I'm quite often unpleasantly surprised when I see myself in photos.

Tbh I think most people are the same.

One person I know who looks incredible in photos is employed as a model, presumably because he is so photogenic.

Barbadossunset · 18/06/2025 13:11

When I do a zoom meeting I feel sorry for whoever has to look at me.

Fizbosshoes · 18/06/2025 13:13

I thought it was virtually the law to look like a serial killer in your passport pic.
I think I look reasonable but I look about 20 years older in my passport pic, and usually not flattered by any photos!
I would never leave the house if I thought I looked like my average photo!

BananaBreadBummy · 18/06/2025 13:14

If you can take them yourself in one of those machines with a little curtain (self serve photo kiosk)it would be better than mobile or someone taking it. The slightest tilt up or down of your face, any tension held or breathing midway, slightest eye twitch all change how you look. If you took 10 pics in a shutter mode you will see how some look better than others. You have to relax your face and think happy thoughts as if you have just seen the love of your life walk up to you. Doing crazy faces can help destress any tight facial muscles and give you a more awake look.

Smittenkitchen · 18/06/2025 13:14

I wonder if the lighting was more on one side of your face?

When I do a zoom meeting I feel sorry for whoever has to look at me.

Funnily enough when I facetime my adult kids I never think I look too bad and it never bothers me.

But for the life of me today I couldn't get even a half 'non minging' photo. I even put a little more make up on than usual, for all the good it did me.

My last passport photo, granted it was 10 years ago, isn't bad at all. Have I really become that much uglier in that time.

God its depressing 😂

I share your pain. I have to sign in at several sites for my job and at one particular site the angle of the camera or the light or whatever means I have to take at least 10 photos before I will agree to have it printed on my badge! And I'm allowed to smile in those photos but it changes to a weird grimace at the click of the camera.
I too shudder at my passport photo.

ApoodlecalledPenny · 18/06/2025 13:16

Get him to retake it, and try to smile with your eyes but not your mouth. It should lift your brows, maybe make jowls look less if those are a problem for you. I am unfortunately blessed with resting bitch face, so find I have to do similar to get a decent unsmiling pose. If I just let my face relax, I look like a bulldog chewing a wasp.

My solution is to wait another ten years and then look back at THIS passport photo.

You will not believe how much better you looked than you thought you did... Your current photo, on the other hand...

BananaBreadBummy · 18/06/2025 13:17

There are definitely an art and trickery to it, most people are asymmetrical and average looking but light and angles make a huge difference not mentioning hair, make up and on social media filters. I used to gasp how ordinary some women were but when they set the cam in a certain way look a lot more attractive.

I refused to use the ones he took this morning. We are going to try again tomorrow.

I get what you mean about smiling with your eyes, I will try that I think. In the ones he has done today I look like I am in a proper foul mood and am slightly scowling for some reason. I definitely need to work on my 'photo face' 😂

The £8 I paid the other day in the photo shop was the best treat I've given myself for years. I needed a new photo for my driving licence, this wonderful person made me look passable. Usually when I see photos of myself, I run away screaming in fright, never mind anyone else

Aprilrainagainagain · 18/06/2025 13:19

I did mine and I think the they’ll refuse me a passport on the grounds of hideousness.

SabreIsMyFave · 18/06/2025 13:19

I honestly think I am OK looking, but when I had my photo taken in the post office (in their photo booth,) for my driving licence renewal last year, I honestly looked like something that had been dragged up from the bottom of the Mariana Trench. 😬

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 18/06/2025 13:19

Everyone’s passport photo is awful I look about 20 years older than I actually am and as if someone’s just told me my cat died on mine

My DD is on her hols until Saturday. She is brilliant at getting good photos so I may even wait for her to come back to do it.

It might sound vain but I am in no rush for the passport, I don't need it to go anywhere. But I do have to put up with this photo for the next 10 years so I want at least not to feel sick every time I have to look at it. 😝

Some people are also awful at taking pictures. My Mum, bless her, takes pictures of everyone from awful angles and in bad poses. I make slight adjustments to height of camera, angle, lighting, zoom etc to try and get a flattering pose. So could be your DH just isn’t a natural photographer 😂

He didn't want to do it and was moaning as he was 'too busy for this' so he didn't even give me chance to get ready and comfortable and move my hair to how I wanted it.

I am going to get my DD to do it on the weekend. She is great at getting good photos. My DH is obviously a bit shit. 😂

Yes, resting bitch face here! I’m told, a lot, that it may never happen! 🙄

FadedRed · 18/06/2025 13:24

You could try going to a Timpsons who do passport photos, they usually know how to get a better photo, and can send it directly to the Passport Office.
My last photo looked better when it came back in my passport than the original, when covered in shiny film, which softened all the wrinkles 😂

cordeliavorkosigan · 18/06/2025 13:24

One of my DD s is very photogenic but looks like she's just robbed a bank in her passport photo. Don't worry about it op. It's not actually your obligation to be appealing to a random onlooker especially when you aren't allowed to even smile.

Togetheragain45 · 18/06/2025 13:25

Mine looks like a classic 'wanted' photo pinned up in a police station.
