I’m trying to remember the last time I used cash and it was April 5th to buy fuel. A friend owed me money and gave me cash.

i think it’s the only time this year I’ve spent cash

I can’t remember when I last used cash but I have some at home just in case.

catlovingdoctor · 18/06/2025 14:52

On holiday a month ago, purely to give tips.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 18/06/2025 14:57

I pay my dog walker weekly in cash
so last Friday.
I keep an emergency £20 for taxi but even they take contactless now.
I pay everywhere on my phone now, thanks to DS1 showing me the way

You can withdraw cash [and lodge cash and cheques] from your bank account at the counter in a Post Office too. The retailer that operates the PO gets a payment from the bank so it keeps local shops alive too.

I usually carry some for walking around cash, tips, school events, occasional taxi driver doesn't want card for small trips. Then there's the window cleaner and other ad hoc cash in hand stuff from time to time.

Post offices are even harder to come by than atms though 😂

Use it or lose it.

I’d be interested to see the results of a mumsnet poll on whether people would care if we became a cashless society where hard currency could no longer be used.

wouldn’t care.

About 2 weeks ago to pay for parking at a junior football gala. Had to go get it especially for this as rarely use it normally.

EstherGreenwood63 · 18/06/2025 15:28

Today.

Genevieva · 18/06/2025 15:28

At least twice in the last week.

Id be happy to lose it.

Ages ago. Can't really recall in fact!

I carry about £50 cash around just in case but it's been the same notes for a while.

DeanElderberry · 18/06/2025 15:40

This morning. Also yesterday. Also Monday. Also Saturday. I use a card some of the time but think it's important to retain an option that is independent of monitoring and control.

The advice to keep 72 hours worth of emergency supplies on hand includes cash.

That’s mad. In Ireland you are lucky to get. €20 note from a cash machine especially in Dublin. Can’t understand why you’d have to put them back into the bank? Does no one have change of 50 pound notes?

So many shops won't take them because they're a forgery favourite.

We have a cashpoint in town that only dispensers tenners. There is often a queue for it. I miss the one in a nearby town that used to only dispense fivers. Always a massive queue for that one!

MrsEndeavourMorse · 18/06/2025 15:46

Today. And most days.

gamerchick · 18/06/2025 15:47

Today. The parking meter only takes coins where I work.

wonkylegs · 18/06/2025 15:48

Friday - school raffle tickets, parking ticket & charity dinner table donation

minnienono · 18/06/2025 15:49

The weekend, at a small club event, they don’t have a card reader (or bank account)

notacooldad · 18/06/2025 15:51

Yesterday day in the pub. Also at ASDA and ice cream parlour.
Paid for parking with cash.

SillyMillie90 · 18/06/2025 15:53

Before COVID 😬

CoffeeWithHer · 18/06/2025 15:55

I really try not to use my card so cash mostly for me too! Im always scrabbling about for loose change to pay for something as I just love it when the cashier says ‘oooooooo we love a bit of change!’ 😂 and I’m in my overdraft so there’s that too 🫠

Surely the money comes from your bank account whether you pay by cash or card though? Unless you’re paid in cash?

VeryQuaintIrene · 18/06/2025 15:59

Yesterday - I use lots of forms of banking and like choice.

TheBewleySisters · 18/06/2025 16:23

My hairdresser only takes cash at the salon, so that's every six weeks I pay her in readies and the man who cuts my grass also only takes cash and I paid him £35 just this morning.

Fullfatandfortyplus · 18/06/2025 16:23

At lunchtime in Sainsbury’s

657904I · 18/06/2025 16:26

the only times I end up with cash tend to be related to colleagues and things like work meals, gifts or leaving dos

Any time I end up with cash I go on a mission to use it up asap. The alternative is to find a bank during their limited opening hours to deposit it which is incredibly difficult near me.

So in summary I never use cash, when I have some I panic spend it as to not deal with the faff! It’s like a hot potato
