When was the last time you used cash?

I’m trying to remember the last time I used cash and it was April 5th to buy fuel. A friend owed me money and gave me cash.

i think it’s the only time this year I’ve spent cash

To add, even some of the shops near me don’t necessarily accept cash. Tesco changed all their self checkout tills to only accept card for example. So if I tried to spend cash, it would mean queuing up in a busy store behind people with trolley fulls of shopping at a manned till.

HonoraBridge · 18/06/2025 16:28

Yesterday, I use it as much as I can.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 18/06/2025 16:44

Every Tuesday for line dancing but that’s about it. DS (16) gets paid in cash from his weekend job so if we need cash we end up using his and transferring him the money to his bank. He calls himself the family cash machine 😂.

All the time in the countryside.
I would urge everyone to keep cash going - the ability for authorities to control what we do is amplified in a cashless society

Nourishinghandcream · 18/06/2025 17:03

Today.
Bought some cakes and as it came to under £10 I paid cash.🍰🧁

This morning. Gutters needed cleaned. The fee was easiest paid in cash.

Hadn't considered this sinister side to finance but you're on the money!

Sorry🤪

About ten mins ago for a haircut.
Their card machine has been broken for the last decade but they are good and insanely cheap (£29 for a cut and blowdry!) so I don't care. Usually i almost always pay by card everywhere though.
Recently went travelling through multiple countries and didn't bother changing a penny with no issue.

Some time before the pandemic, so maybe late 2019.

What have you done if the place doesn’t take cash?

I got caught out last month in France and someone else brought me a drink - otherwise I’d have left.

"broken" 😆

ETA: I totally wouldn't care either though if you're getting a decent cut for £29

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2025 17:13

Of course it’s about control with using cards. They know where we are at all times and what we are spending it on. Some places like to put the cash to one side as well ( not suggesting they are all tax fiddling , but makes you wonder with some !)
Must be a reason the authorities don’t like cash.

I have a backup tenner in my phone case, but I haven’t needed it yet. To be fair, I don’t travel much, and haven’t been abroad for many years.

Pre-Covid! I hate touching money

But you're okay touching self serve machines which usually are card only?

As you allude to, it makes it much harder for businesses to avoid tax and operate in black or grey markets.

Who is the "they" you think is monitoring our spending? It would currently be illegal for Tesco (for example) to pass that information to the Government without a specific exemption under data laws.

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2025 17:17

Still believe that the government like to monitor our spending habits and cards is the way forwards.
it is only my own opinion though !

Mama1980 · 18/06/2025 17:18

About ten minutes ago, I paid for bubble tea. Also today in H and M, Lush, Boots and the newsagents. I use cash as much as possible.

WhereHasMyPlanetGone · 18/06/2025 12:28

I put a £1 coin in the trolley at Tesco yesterday. Otherwise I’m not sure… maybe the school summer fete last June?

Same!
Edit just realised you said last June, I meant this June.

NoThankYouSis · 18/06/2025 17:20

In the post office yesterday. I often use cash, dc’s clubs, hairdresser, parking etc and don’t like it when shops refuse to accept it, will usually take my business elsewhere in that situation if I can.

MadamDicey · 18/06/2025 17:21

I try to use cash everywhere apart from big businesses, I always pay cash to small businesses, helps avoid card fees

Needspaceforlego · 18/06/2025 17:21

NewBinBag · 18/06/2025 12:24

Still quite often.
Kids have to take cash subs to scouts weekly.
Pay the takeaway delivery guy in cash most Fridays.
Occasional £10 in a birthday card for kids parties
I try to pay my hairdresser in cash (so she doesn't lose the transaction fee).

I don't carry cash but we have a communal jar with a float at home if anyone needs it.

Edited

Lots of other scout groups have gone Cardless and use GoCardless software to do direct debit. So much easier.
But it does mean kids get less exposure to handling cash.

Sourisblanche · 18/06/2025 17:22

Paid cash for some compost in the uk last month.

I was in France last week, used plenty of cash at the market. I even have a new cheque book from my recently opened French bank account!

CoffeeWithHer · 18/06/2025 17:42

WhereHasMyPlanetGone · 18/06/2025 15:57

Surely the money comes from your bank account whether you pay by cash or card though? Unless you’re paid in cash?

I take out cash each week as my ‘budget’ and once the cash is gone, tough titty! I have to wait to next week but day to day I have to be strict with myself and this works. When I fall off the wagon I have to tow myself back in 🫠😂 it’s the only way I get back out my overdraft…..the joys!

Oh I used to love my cheque book -
felt like the bees knees and grown up! 😂

2 weeks ago in Italy.

So many shops won't take them because they're a forgery favourite.

We have a cashpoint in town that only dispensers tenners. There is often a queue for it. I miss the one in a nearby town that used to only dispense fivers. Always a massive queue for that one!

You get nothing in Ireland for a fiver except a bag of crisps or a chocolate bar😢.
