Basil

I'm outraged - I have a 14 year old called Basil.

He is a cat though 🤣

It is interesting the selection of names people think aren’t around. There is a basil in my son’s class at school!

It’s possible that it’s names people don’t particularly like, I know my selection were.

Bob but I’m sure there’s a hipster out there with a baby Bob.

Funny about Gary. I Was asked by strange man at a park recently about my dog & my son and what his name is. I wanted to leave as politely as possible so I said my son’s name was Gary - was just the first thing that came to mind.

They'll all come round again. When I was a youngster there were certain names that were thought beyond the pale but are now popular again. If you wait long enough they'll become popular again.

Exactly. My mum would have baulked at the idea of calling her children Ivy, Elsie, Olive, Maisie, Sidney, Stanley, etc as they were her parent’s generation names and far too old fashioned and uncool. Even Lily was very very out of fashion name - very old lady name.

Agree Karen is over. Eileen will never again be resurrected & the same with Noleen. I think Bonnie will not be back again for a while.

I know “old” names sometimes make a surprising comeback, but I suspect most of the above are gone for good. All, strangely enough, are or were names of members of my family.

I know a cat called Morris - the name really suits him!

VaddaABeetch · 14/06/2025 15:22

Kevin & Deirdre are ancient Irish names. They will certainly live on in Ireland

Yes, I teach in a school with 1,850 students, so I find it interesting to see what names are becoming more current, and which are unusual, but clearly getting a revival.

Names come round again. When I first started teaching, I could never have imagined I'd end up with a class with children called Stanley, Wilfred, Arthur, Elsie, Nancy and Violet.
To me they were old people's names, yet here we are!

I know! A few years ago the indicator board at the doctors' flashed up Arthur Morrison and I instinctively looked round for an old man, only to see a baby being carried into his appointment. Grin

There’s two baby olives at my child’s nursery. I quite like it as a name.

I know a Clifford in his mid-teens.

I knew my own name would have been mentioned too. It's not just old-fashioned, it has an association that rules it out for a good many people - for now. Give it time.

Edgar is quite popular in my Ds’ school, it seems to be the rule that boy’s names have to start with E.

His friends are all Edgar, Eden, Ewan, Ethan, Eric I struggle to remember which is which.

i think most names suggested will come back around at some point but Roger and Fanny may have had their day.
