Karen now it's used as an.insult.

That's such a shame, isn't it? Awful for women called Karen.

Wigtopia · 14/06/2025 15:07

Larry
Basil

Names come round again. When I first started teaching, I could never have imagined I'd end up with a class with children called Stanley, Wilfred, Arthur, Elsie, Nancy and Violet.
To me they were old people's names, yet here we are!

I like a lot of those old names but can’t imagine liking a lot of them listed here. But who knows in 59 years time if they’ll be attractive again.

Redtreethree · 14/06/2025 15:08

I agree with Mildred and Fanny. Also Dick.

A lot will definitely come back though. Gary and Barry will sound fresher than Harry in a few years. Anything biblical like Mark or Susan(nah) will cycle back round too.

MidnightMeltdown · 14/06/2025 15:08

Adolf

Grin Not a bad earworm for the rest of the afternoon!

Mildred, Deirdre, Ena, Ethel, Euphemia, Beryl

Darren, Timothy, Lionel, Denis, Martin, Gordon

I campaigned really hard to call my daughter Deirdre but DH vetoed it

Jessbow · 14/06/2025 15:09

I know 2 Percys. Both under 12.

We know a 2 year old Percy.

Without timescales. the question doesn't really make sense.

Also there is the perverse nature of humanity. And that is before you blend in the usual ignorance of the age.

I would have laid money that would be off limits in my lifetime ... and I would have lost.

People often look back to their grandparents or great grandparents for names so I expect they’ll all be back after a rest. I imagine Adolf is pretty done though. And some of the virtue names (Chastity, Patience etc) although grace and Hope remain. Gertrude and Ermintrude will presumably always sound very ugly.

I have a teenager with one of those names, and there's a boy in the year below with the same name

Larry
Basil

I actually floated Basil as a potential name for my son when I was pregnant… I blame hormones 😂 my husband just replied ‘as in Brush?’ Or Fawlty I suppose 😂

DuesToTheDirt · 14/06/2025 15:12

Gary isn't old enough to come back in. It's grandparents names that come back into fashion after years in the wilderness, so maybe when the Gary cohort are 70-80 it will be fashionable again.

Without the connotations it’s actually a nice name, so I’m not surprised if it’s making a comeback.

I wouldn’t automatically think of the serial killer - it was long before I was born and I’m in my mid-40s. For most having children now it will be ancient history.

Adolf is the only name mentioned so far that I really can’t see coming back.

Suszieq · 14/06/2025 15:15

Brenda. Susan, Patricia, Geraldine, Karen (obvs), Gary, Clive, Alan,

Karen, Sharon, Sonia, Linda

There was a Sharon in my daughter’s class so mid teens . Still life in the name yet.

nebulae · 14/06/2025 15:16

They'll all come round again. When I was a youngster there were certain names that were thought beyond the pale but are now popular again. If you wait long enough they'll become popular again.

Larry
Basil

It is interesting the selection of names people think aren’t around. There is a basil in my son’s class at school!
