I thought Agnes and Maud but strangely there are a few babies around with those names. Cyril and Cuthbert?

I'm a Catholic, don't see them as unusual but I don't like Concepta, I think that is as acceptable as not liking Beryl or Wayne.

I can’t help but agree! Also, I’m in NI and used to come across these names a fair bit back in the 70’s/80’s. Most of them are probably at least in their fifties now (like me) and most are probably older. The names are definitely dying out here - whether they’re popular elsewhere or not - and some of us don’t think that’s such a bad thing😅

Hollyhobbi · 18/06/2025 11:51

Those Catholic saints names are dying out in Ireland thankfully. My mums name is in that list and I don’t know if anyone younger than her with that name.

The "z" in Grizel was originally a yogh, so the name was originally pronounced with a soft sound in the middle.

It's the same process that resulted in the surname Menzies, where the "z" was a yogh, going from being pronounced Ming-is to Menzies with a hard "z".

But regardless, Grizel will not make a comeback, whether pronounced Gri-yell or Grizzle.

Interesting...Grizel doesn't seem nearly so bad if pronounced Gri-yell instead of Gristle/Grizzle. If given to a baby now they would have a future of constantly correcting the pronunciation!

Griz/Grizzle is DD’s nickname at 18.

She was a grizzly baby!

Courtenay. I know of one in her twenties. It doesn't seem to adapt to a cute nickname either. Courtie, Tenay, Tency.

Nushi21 · 18/06/2025 16:49

As I was collecting my 3 year old from nursery yesterday, a parent came in to collect their daughter. A 3 year old Heidi!!!
I did manage to get talking to the parent about the name. They were in their late 30’s, British and it was their first child. They just liked the name and she wasn’t named after a grand parent or aunt.

I have to say she did look like a little Heidi.

SwedishEdith · 18/06/2025 17:37

I don't think Heidi is unusual. I know a few, albeit in their late teens/early twenties but can still see it being a name that gets used.

I worked in childcare about 15 years ago. There were a several young Heidis. My DH has an ex called Heidi who is in her 40s.

Fernhurst · 18/06/2025 18:24

I love Heidi. I'll always think of a young girl because of the book.

SuziQuinto · 18/06/2025 18:39

Me too, I love that name. It makes me feel happy!

Olive

I know two Olives under 16.

NormasArse · 18/06/2025 18:46

Darren, Wayne, Dwayne, David.

Christine, Linda, Brenda, Shirley.

SuziQuinto · 18/06/2025 18:49

David is still very widely used.

kurotora · 18/06/2025 22:53

Mary, Margaret, Marion - my mum, her mum, and my dad’s mum. And three names that are dead in popularity. Almost called my daughter Marion but we had people saying they’d never heard it before!

I will add Mavis in there too.

XWKD · 19/06/2025 00:03

Barry won't go away. It's a common Irish name, and always was, just like Aidan.

XWKD · 19/06/2025 00:15

Phyllis, Agnes, Carmel, Esther, Doris, Beryl, Enid, Bertha, Doris, Mabel, Wayne, Sharon, Kenneth, Darren, Darryl, Jayden (and variants), and names like Braxton, Pa(i)ge and Harper. Possibly Lilly and Jack as the the trend is/was too great. Also girls called Charlie (who aren't Charlotte).

I think Vera and Stanley will make a comeback, and maybe Hilda.

I went to school with a Marion. I'm early 40s.

I know 2 young Mabel’s. 🙂 There’s been loads of Stanley’s about for about 10 years now too.

blondie87 · 19/06/2025 07:01

I know many Amanda’s ranging from mid 30s to 60s, but never met a baby/child Amanda and I’ve been to lots of baby groups, have school aged children and worked in schools. Ditto Claire/Clare, Michelle, Yvonne, Michael, Philip, Andrew, Jennifer.

Yes my 18 year old son had a Stanley in his class at primary school.

VividViolet · 19/06/2025 08:07

I know two primary school aged Marys.

Actually, I don't know why I put Mabel. I'm not surprised it's making a comeback, the way Esme did.

I didn't the Stanley comeback had started. 🙂

When I was pregnant with DD14 someone I worked with and was also pregnant wanted to call her son Stanley but was talked out of it by her entire family. By the time I had DD10 it was starting to be used around here again. She was very pissed off that she’d been talked out of it when I brought it up. 😁
