Darren/Darrin/Darin are bad but they are becoming grandparents now so some may slip through as middle names.

Worse than those is Daryl. Can't imagine anyone thinking that would be nice for a baby (with the usual caveats of we never know etc.) Someone's going to tell me it's biblical now aren't they?

I have no idea but I do know a male Darrell ,but agree it's not a name I like or would choose.

I always thought Concepta was worse than Assumpta.

I used to work with a Perpetua. She hated it😆

Assumpta, Attracta, Concepta, Philomena, Perpetua, Conseulo etc. will also never die out. Again, maybe some of you not brought up in Catholic countries think these names are stranger or more unusual than they actually are!

CremeEggThief · 17/06/2025 15:42

Sorry not sure how I ended up quoting tuvamoodyson!

Meaning, origin and history of the name Darrell - Behind the Name
Daryl seems to be a variant.

d'Airelle sounds quite dashing.Smile

Fernhurst · 17/06/2025 16:05

I like Darrell for a girl as I loved Malory Towers and the main character.

Ha ha at those popularity graphs for England though

Emanwenym · 17/06/2025 16:24

That's why some MNers say a name is faddy and will date badly.

Piggywaspushed · 17/06/2025 16:26

I was in a meeting with a bunch of women in their 40s yesterday. There were two Michelles. I don't think that will make a comeback.

Me too! I loved Mallory Towers. I still like the name Darrell.

who is the bad Nigel?

Farage

Farage

I don't know. It might end up transmogrified ?

"I just stepped in a Nigel outside." ("So I rubbed his nose in it", if you are joking along at home).

Always thought very odd in MT, hardly upper middle class UK at time or even in circulation. EB only used as Darrell Waters her husband.

He was Kenneth, wasn't he? She changed her daughter's surname to Darrell Waters.

That’s right. The daughters surname was Pollock, first husband’s name, second husband was Kenneth Darrell-Waters & a surgeon as per Darrell’s Dad from memory.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 17/06/2025 21:33

Darrell Rivers was fab - I much preferred Malory Towers over St Clares.

Going back to names I really like Consuelo as a first name & Philomena as a middle name but not both together, as that would be too much!

I don't like the name Ethel it's horrible.
I think it's cruel to use that name (along with Bertha) for a little girl now.
So I was very surprised when Lilly Allen called her first daughter that. She called her second daughter Marnie which is lovely.

Just saw this on a film's credits
Norbert
Norris (off Corrie)

Ok. Wasn't he Norris Cole?
Actually you don't see Norbert nowadays.

I put forward Grizel (pronounced Gristle), a Scottish girl's name, for worst girl's name ever. I knew somebody (an old lady) with that name, and apparently it was suggested by my great grandmother when my mum was born, but granny thankfully put her foot down!

As in 'Lady Grisel Bailey' on the lintel at the Deaconess hospital in Edinburgh? We always pronounced it Grizelle or like the ballet in our family. I later came across a Grisel in the wild and she pronounced it like the meat version!

it should be revived. Nobby Stiles - Wikipedia

VividViolet · 18/06/2025 09:48

The "z" in Grizel was originally a yogh, so the name was originally pronounced with a soft sound in the middle.

It's the same process that resulted in the surname Menzies, where the "z" was a yogh, going from being pronounced Ming-is to Menzies with a hard "z".

But regardless, Grizel will not make a comeback, whether pronounced Gri-yell or Grizzle.

I'm a Catholic, don't see them as unusual but I don't like Concepta, I think that is as acceptable as not liking Beryl or Wayne.
