Joan
Derek

deeahgwitch · 17/06/2025 08:16

I forgot Vera, Gladys, Ethel.
And Gobnait, an Irish name ( the worst girl’s name imo ).

Emanwenym · 17/06/2025 08:16

@CrushingOnRubies ,Simon will be back, it's from the Bible.

@RosesAndHellebores , those are classic names and will be back. Janet will not die out, but Janette might.

We know a family where the parents are Brazilian-English - they have 3 boys all now in their 20s named Darren, Kevin & Adrian. Many were horrified by the choices, especially their English Grandmother but apparently the Brazilian side of the family thought they were all fantastic and unusual names!
I guess names we grow not to like in the UK are often still very popular elsewhere in the world so essentially will never completely die out.
I’ve worked in education for many years but I haven’t come across an Andrew at all - although this is my husband’s name.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 17/06/2025 08:31

Joan, Jean and karen for girls

Derek, Darren, Keith for boys.

deeahgwitch · 17/06/2025 08:37

Kevin is of Irish origin and doesn’t have the same connotations in Ireland as it does in the UK.
Here in Ireland it’s regarded as a good solid name. I think in the UK it is regarded as a bit common, is it ?

Violinist64 · 17/06/2025 09:12

Andrew was THE most popular name for boys born in the mid-sixties. There were five of them in my primary school class. This thread is interesting because so many of the names mentioned have been those that were popular in the fifties, sixties and seventies, which includes my generation. If a similar post had been made thirty years ago, we would have predicted that such names as Edith, Ethel (yes, l have come across small girls called Ethel), Dorothy, Violet, Lily, Stanley, Reggie, Alf(ie) and Ronnie would never come back. Too old-fashioned, our grandparents' names. In another forty or fifty years' time

Violinist64 · 17/06/2025 09:20

Couldn't finish my last post. In forty or fifty years' time, primary school classes will probably be filled with Angelas, Sarahs, Helens, Janes, Fionas, Christines, Lindas, Claires, Jennifers, Carolines; Davids, Johns, Andrews, Peters, Stephens, Brians, Simons, Pauls, Marks and Timothys. This could be a register of names from my generation. Give it another twenty years and Gemma could well be popular again.

Nope the worst girls name is Assumpta😂

deeahgwitch · 17/06/2025 09:41

No @Hollyhobbi I think Gobnait trumps Assumpta.
And Attracta trumps Assumpta too.
I knew an Attracta and she was unfortunately named as sadly, she was no beauty. I’m no beauty myself but I do try and make an effort.

So is mine 😂

And mine 🙄! And everyone agreed it won’t come back!

I put forward Grizel (pronounced Gristle), a Scottish girl's name, for worst girl's name ever. I knew somebody (an old lady) with that name, and apparently it was suggested by my great grandmother when my mum was born, but granny thankfully put her foot down!

C8H10N4O2 · 17/06/2025 10:50

I’m a sixties baby. One of my classes had four Janes and four Carolines and three Joannas. Otherwise there were a couple of Claires plus the scattering of Gillian, Hazel, Heather, Tracey, Helen, Claire, PatricIa (Trish not Pat), Elizabeth (Beth not Lizzy), Libby, Sharon and a couple of Karens. Always a good scattering of Marys but often as middle names. Claire was very common as the second part of a hyphenated first name, just as when my DC were in primary ever second girl was “something-Louise”.

Ten years above me would have been the Janets, lots of Susans and Margarets, Lynne, Brenda, Barbara, Belinda, Deirdre, Janet, Linda, Hilary. Plus the Marys as middle names or first names where middle name was the daily use name.

I’m of the view that if Ethel can be in Vogue for celebs any name can return.

TheodoraCrumpet · 17/06/2025 10:55

I remember finding Orabel in a baby names book, and wondering if it was pronounced Orrible. That must rank pretty high in the worst names league, because however it's meant to be pronounced, you'd get a fair number going with Orrible.

Emanwenym · 17/06/2025 11:18

Where's the laugh emoji when you need it?

I can see Aurabelle and Aribelle being used.

YosoyEduardo · 17/06/2025 12:14

Paula

upinaballoon · 17/06/2025 12:29

None. After a few decades the most unexpected names become fashionable again.

I always thought Concepta was worse than Assumpta.

Gary is the male equivalent of Sharon and Tracey!

Well now you say it, maybe you're right. With Darren anyway. Saw some eps of an old show called Bewitched recently. The husband is called Darren and his mil just CANNOT get it right!

Emanwenym · 17/06/2025 14:00

@NPET ,the character in Bewitched is Darrin.

SwedishEdith · 17/06/2025 14:26

Darren/Darrin/Darin are bad but they are becoming grandparents now so some may slip through as middle names.

Worse than those is Daryl. Can't imagine anyone thinking that would be nice for a baby (with the usual caveats of we never know etc.) Someone's going to tell me it's biblical now aren't they?
