Greta’s flotilla

What are you thoughts on this? 13 people including Greta Thunberg were travelling to Palestine via boat with supplies. It’s been intercepted by Isreal and diverted.

Whatvare your thoughts? I’m guessing they will simply be deported, maybe with a severe telling off? The UN and the Palestinian foreign ministry have vocalised their support and asked for them to be allowed to continue their journey, however Isreal have said it was nothing more than a vanity exercise and they had very limited supplies on board to actually give aid.

What do you think will happen to the activists on board? Do you think they were right to go? Do you think they genuinely wanted to help or it was more about raising awareness?

I like Greta and I love that she has, so far, used her life to champion causes and she seems like a clever and funny woman. But I wonder if this trio was always doomed and what their long term plan was, especially if they had little aid onboard? But if that was their intention, maybe they just wanted to raise awareness of their feelings on the situation? Should anyone be trying to intervene like this or should it be left to proper channels?

I know feelings are high about this and I want to say I don’t support any of the awful things that have happened and recognise bad things on both sides. I don’t care for Israel’s terrible behaviour or Hamas’ awful doings, I do however care for the innocent people in the middle on both sides. This thread is just to get general thoughts on this…’mission’.

Just to add my thoughts: if this was a genuine aid mission then I respect them putting themselves potentially at risk (due to the boat trip) to care for others but also feel like it’s extremely naive and not actually the right thing to do, there has to be better ways to support?

Pathetic, virtue signalling waste of time.

Easier to spend your time typing things like this than get out there like Greta and do something I guess

Yes, she has failed because she has not stopped the war 🙄

Reminds me of the adults who criticized her environmental activism because she didn't 'have the answers'.

No she hasn’t failed - she’s raised her SM profile, so go Greta.

Meanwhile, the war continues as it does. As I said, zero real impact.

Anybody who thinks she is out for her own ego either doesn't know much about her or is simply very bad a reading people.

We see others as we see ourselves.

SirChenjins · 09/06/2025 14:48

Neither - she’s simply a media personality who achieves zero real impact but who uses her profile in the same way many slebs do. She might hold very strong views on important matters but ultimately nothing will change here.

However, I am prepared to admit I’m wrong if Hamas and Israel call a permanent ceasefire and attribute it to Greta.

She's raising awareness of what's happening in Gaza. I hope seeing a young woman be brave enough to take them on will mean that our government and others will grow some balls and actually deal with the situation. It's gone on for long enough now. Enough, enough, ENOUGH!

Sometimes less appealing individuals do brave things. Look at Navalny - he said awful racist things, then gave his life to try to bring democracy to Russia. I didn't 'like' him but I admired what he did hugely.

Could you possibly answer my actual question?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 09/06/2025 14:52

Was she willing to risk Europe going to war with America and Israel had she been killed?
Creating a tiktok video mentioning kidnap and chemicals, pleading for support from the Swedish government, then sharing a sandwich with IDF soldiers smiling.
There is a thin line between genius and insanity.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/06/2025 14:54

Not sure about the politics/ethics but one of the crew said yesterday that Israel has no right to intercept SS they are in international waters? If this is correct, why has this happened?

CosyWriter · 09/06/2025 15:01

Israel breaks the law shocker.

CosyWriter · 09/06/2025 14:51

I'm so glad! I had no idea what was going on!!!

This is exactly the point.

All of us know exactly what's going on in Israel/Palestine and we hear about it daily, both on social media and the news.

It's talked about constantly (as it should be).

What has Greta achieved - and what was she trying to achieve? I am struggling to understand (genuinely) what the point of this was.

Suggesting it's to raise awareness is ridiculous because this conflict is being discussed constantly, with even Z-list celebrities chipping in with their opinion.

And yes, I do view this cynically because Greta has been a committed environmental activist - she's never been involved in anything beyond that. There have been many other atrocities but she's not felt compelled to do anything - until now.

She could have done genuine good by highlighting other cases of extreme suffering that are lesser known. This does feel performative, and not particularly helpful to anyone.

I don't know why she needs to draw attention to it when it's been all over our news and online media for nearly two years now. The scenes from Gaza are harrowing, does she think we're too thick to understand?

clearly some people are.

CosyWriter · 09/06/2025 15:29

KurtShirty · 09/06/2025 15:16

Actual LOL from me there! 😂

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/06/2025 15:31

What I don't understand @Beautifulspringsunshine is if this is true, then why are Israel killing innocent children? If Hamas are the ones blocking the aid why isn't Israel working towards feeding the people and liberating the people from Hamas? And getting the support of the international community while they are at it. It just doesn't add up

yummyscummymummy01 · 09/06/2025 15:32

There's lots of coverage but what's covered is so similar (more death, more starvation) with fuck all being done about it that's it's easy to turn away. Being reminded that people have individual agency and can protest and make a difference now and again encourages others to think about it too.
Also on a separate note I do think the negative public commentary about Greta often comes from men of a certain age so it has a whiff of sexism about it.

Nothing will happen because of Greta. We are all aware of what’s happening in Gaza.

Zebedee999 · 09/06/2025 15:42

heavenisaplaceonearth · 09/06/2025 14:42

She’s doing what she can with what she has. I hope she hops straight back on another boat and this time more follow her.

If she really wanted to do something she could fund an alternative government to Hamas. No country in the ME wants anything to do with Palestinians as they know they are trouble since they voted Hamas in.
But always virtue signalling trumps actually doing something worthwhile.

Maddy70 · 09/06/2025 15:48

It's such a wonderful thing they did it's brought recognition world wide

EsmaCannonball · 09/06/2025 15:49

The Israelis have facilitated millions of meals and millions of pounds worth of aid getting directly to the people of Gaza in the last few days. They have risked the lives of Israeli soldiers to do this and have managed to prevent Hamas commandeering the aid and selling it for profit.

The flotilla was only ever a pointless vanity project. Perhaps those involved might take a second to think why Gaza was 'blockaded' in the first place and why the Egyptians (who have meddled in this region for centuries and caused much of today's problems) aren't too keen on relaxing the border with Gaza.

KurtansCurtain · 09/06/2025 15:54

Gnomegarden32 · 09/06/2025 15:36

I want to know what you think about the terrorist sympathiser on board

Pinkpurplepeony · 09/06/2025 16:08

So now she’s delivered her 2 bags of rice to Gaza is she going to focus her efforts perhaps on the horrific situations in, for example, South Sudan or Afghanistan? There are shocking humanitarian crises all over the world …oh, and what on earth were they chucking in to the sea? Environmentally friendly items??

ginasevern · 09/06/2025 16:11

TheSnugMoose · 09/06/2025 13:05

I didn’t realise this. As I said I don’t like Hamas but I didn’t realise they were also doing this.

Yes, really hard to believe that a group of heavily armed, flagrantly misogynistic male terrorists could behave like that isn't it.

Do many people still need to have their awareness raised about the horrible situation in Gaza? You'd need to have been living under a rock not to be aware of it. Therefore this expedition seems fairly pointless.
