Greta’s flotilla

What are you thoughts on this? 13 people including Greta Thunberg were travelling to Palestine via boat with supplies. It’s been intercepted by Isreal and diverted.

Whatvare your thoughts? I’m guessing they will simply be deported, maybe with a severe telling off? The UN and the Palestinian foreign ministry have vocalised their support and asked for them to be allowed to continue their journey, however Isreal have said it was nothing more than a vanity exercise and they had very limited supplies on board to actually give aid.

What do you think will happen to the activists on board? Do you think they were right to go? Do you think they genuinely wanted to help or it was more about raising awareness?

I like Greta and I love that she has, so far, used her life to champion causes and she seems like a clever and funny woman. But I wonder if this trio was always doomed and what their long term plan was, especially if they had little aid onboard? But if that was their intention, maybe they just wanted to raise awareness of their feelings on the situation? Should anyone be trying to intervene like this or should it be left to proper channels?

I know feelings are high about this and I want to say I don’t support any of the awful things that have happened and recognise bad things on both sides. I don’t care for Israel’s terrible behaviour or Hamas’ awful doings, I do however care for the innocent people in the middle on both sides. This thread is just to get general thoughts on this…’mission’.

Just to add my thoughts: if this was a genuine aid mission then I respect them putting themselves potentially at risk (due to the boat trip) to care for others but also feel like it’s extremely naive and not actually the right thing to do, there has to be better ways to support?

I didn’t realise this. As I said I don’t like Hamas but I didn’t realise they were also doing this.

This is common knowledge but we live in a world of Echo Chambers so I’m not surprised you were unaware.
Please all, watch out for your ‘Echo Chamber’.
Ensure you follow media from all angles, left, right, for against. You don’t have to believe or support it all, but open up your horizon so you can evaluate and consider all.

Vodkamartini3olives · 09/06/2025 14:22

I think she's very foolish and she's lucky she's been intercepted by Israel. If she'd actuall made it to Gaza she would probably have been raped and tortured and paraded through the streets within hours.

twilightermummy · 09/06/2025 14:22

I think that she's brilliant. If she were my daughter, I'd be super proud of her.
Whether she did this for vanity, or virtue signalling (I don't think so), either way it still sends an important message. The world is watching and the people in power are doing sweet FA about it.
I love that she stands by what she believes in despite all the hate she receives.
This has just made me love her more.
Just to add, I also hate what happened on October 7th but it's clear that Israel's reaction is massively disproportionate and well, disgusting quite frankly.

The noise is the point because it's all a private citizen can do, just as with the environment.

Is SM noise the point? The personality of a somewhat Marmite character has become the noise, nothing more.

Gnomegarden32 · 09/06/2025 14:24

What makes her more heroic imo is that she has always been deeply uncomfortable with all the attention - any emotionally intelligent person who has watched the documentaries will see that. An autistic girl who visibly had difficulties with being approached by idiot adults wanting autographs but who was still determined to travel to international conferences and use her voice.

She knows it's the most impactful thing she can do - make powerful people uncomfortable. And everyday fools it seems.

Who was made feel uncomfortable here? The Israelis have played this so well that they've turned it into a joke.

SirChenjins · 09/06/2025 14:27

She has made zero real impact - the only impact has been to raise her own profile on SM.

Moulook31 · 09/06/2025 14:28

She is incredibly brave. She has brought this war to the attention of the younger generation, who probably do not fully understand that this war started long before 7 October. It will perhaps encourage them to read about it and understand its history. Starving people, especially children is not morally right.

Pointless and pathetic. Virtue signaling wank.

Nearly 20 million are experiencing severe hunger and food shortages in Yemen....I wonder why she didn't go there to deliver aid?

Bollocks point and really boring

She really isn't.

KurtShirty · 09/06/2025 14:30

Perhaps she’s trying to draw attention to the war crimes being committed by Israel towards the Palestinian people. Perhaps Israel is lying as they always do

I'm sure you are superior and have done a lot more to fight social ills than Greta has.

Gnomegarden32 · 09/06/2025 14:12

Even braver as they don't have fame to protect them.

Do you know who they are though? What about Thiago Avila?

is he a brave man? Have a look at some of the videos of him on X and read the things he said about the leader of hezbollah whose funeral he attended.

Quarterofa · 09/06/2025 14:31

HermioneWeasley · 09/06/2025 12:15

It’s a pointless virtue signalling exercise. If I were her parents I would be thanking the hug heavens she’s safely in IDF custody and not taken by Hamas. I understand the IDF are going to show them footage from October 7th before they are released which I think is an excellent idea.

I’m sure they are already aware that Oct 7 was an absolutely horrific despicable act of evil . It doesn’t change the fact that’s it’s still also evil to harm and starve innocent Palestinian children ?

I don't know why she needs to draw attention to it when it's been all over our news and online media for nearly two years now. The scenes from Gaza are harrowing, does she think we're too thick to understand?

The starving of children is overlooked and hardly mentioned.

It's taken a few brave individuals to risk their lives to do what's desperately needed. It's not just about delivering aid or drawing attention to themselves! It's the fact that Isreal thinks it needs to intercept. Why? Why not let them deliver the aid?

The world is waking up slowly. It's not about the hostages. It's ethnic cleansing. The killing needs to stop! Totally disproportionate to Oct 7. There's no comparison anymore.

Bravo to Greta.

Egypt has blockaded Gaza for years due to the issues Palsestinians caused there but not one group ever protests against that... probably because they are mainly Muslims. Meanwhile Israel is subject to protests endlessly... probably because they are mainly Jews.
Where is Greta in all these actual African genocides.... no where to be seen, again probably because Jews are not involved.

Yes, she has failed because she has not stopped the war 🙄

Reminds me of the adults who criticized her environmental activism because she didn't 'have the answers'.

Young people are definitely aware of this war. And unfortunately subject to the propaganda war and it’s impacts on the prevalence of anti Israel and Anti Semitism. My niece, Year 7, has been in tears after telling her class mates she is of Israeli heritage and been ostracised.

Kids are exposed to endless news and propaganda and misinformation via Tik Tok and SM.

Sometimes less appealing individuals do brave things. Look at Navalny - he said awful racist things, then gave his life to try to bring democracy to Russia. I didn't 'like' him but I admired what he did hugely.

heavenisaplaceonearth · 09/06/2025 14:42

She’s doing what she can with what she has. I hope she hops straight back on another boat and this time more follow her.

CosyWriter · 09/06/2025 14:42

So far it's been

  1. She's there to highlight the cause - we already know about this situation.

2 She's there to make powerful people feel scared - that didn't happen

  1. She's not there to actually stop a war - see point 1 above.

She is very good at making people feel good about themselves for supporting her, though.
