Greta’s flotilla

TheSnugMoose · 09/06/2025 12:08

What are you thoughts on this? 13 people including Greta Thunberg were travelling to Palestine via boat with supplies. It’s been intercepted by Isreal and diverted.

Whatvare your thoughts? I’m guessing they will simply be deported, maybe with a severe telling off? The UN and the Palestinian foreign ministry have vocalised their support and asked for them to be allowed to continue their journey, however Isreal have said it was nothing more than a vanity exercise and they had very limited supplies on board to actually give aid.

What do you think will happen to the activists on board? Do you think they were right to go? Do you think they genuinely wanted to help or it was more about raising awareness?

I like Greta and I love that she has, so far, used her life to champion causes and she seems like a clever and funny woman. But I wonder if this trio was always doomed and what their long term plan was, especially if they had little aid onboard? But if that was their intention, maybe they just wanted to raise awareness of their feelings on the situation? Should anyone be trying to intervene like this or should it be left to proper channels?

I know feelings are high about this and I want to say I don’t support any of the awful things that have happened and recognise bad things on both sides. I don’t care for Israel’s terrible behaviour or Hamas’ awful doings, I do however care for the innocent people in the middle on both sides. This thread is just to get general thoughts on this…’mission’.

Just to add my thoughts: if this was a genuine aid mission then I respect them putting themselves potentially at risk (due to the boat trip) to care for others but also feel like it’s extremely naive and not actually the right thing to do, there has to be better ways to support?

Do many people still need to have their awareness raised about the horrible situation in Gaza? You'd need to have been living under a rock not to be aware of it. Therefore this expedition seems fairly pointless.

And quite disappointing to accept water and sandwiches in full view while thousands are starving

This began in 1948, not October 7th.

It began a long time before 1948.

PR exercise, I doubt they didn't have food or water on board.

BloodandGlitter · 09/06/2025 16:42

At least she's not just sitting on a thread bitching about people who are taking action.

Perhaps the IDF could be forced to watch videos of their own atrocities and see if they change their mind? Perhaps the video of the Doctor in Gaza receiving the bodies of 9 of her children while she worked.

By people who are dead and gone. At some point enough is enough. While both sides commit atrocities and with the genocide that's happening at the moment, as usual it’s the innocents who suffer.

Of course it was a vanity exercise. Greta is the definition of a useful idiot. If there’s a bandwagon she’s jumping aboard

Exactly this.

Agreed, it is a genocide and needs to end. Sadly I don't see there ever being a resolution to this. Israelis are determined that it's their land.

Those saying she is foolish as it won't work underestimate her considerable intelligence. She will have known the risks and likely outcome - it's a courageous attempt to raise awareness of the difficulty of getting aid to Gaza. While she will know her fame will probably protect her, it's not guaranteed, so she has been very brave imo.

Heroic individuals have always attracted opprobrium as they make people uncomfortable. How embarrassing to be one of these narrow minded fools instead of someone who takes action against injustice.

Aid won’t be dropped off by random boats. That’s before you get to the selfie thing.

I have no idea if intercepting them in international waters was illegal or not. The media isn't reporting on that. The media is reporting that the crew were given sandwiches and water by Israel and were "in good spirits". That's what Sky News are saying so that's what people are hearing about Israel right now. I don't report the news, I'm just pointing out how it's been portrayed.

Thumberg and her supporters were warned in advance that they would be intercepted. 🤷‍♀️

The Israeli Government and some Israelis. But not all Israelis.
There are MANY Israelis and Jews who do not believe in this war and who support and wish desperately for peace & a 2 state solution.

To those saying 'well there's lots going on in the world why doesn't she talk about those humanitarian situations'. You could apply that logic to anything you raise awareness of. There are so many issues in the world sometimes you just have to focus on one and hope to change things. The alternative is to be completely overwhelmed by the number of issues there are to solve and end up doing nothing.

Cparrot · 09/06/2025 17:05

I was indifferent to Greta before, now I actually dislike her. I have seen no signs of her massive intellect.
She’s very good or her management are in keeping her in the limelight.

'Doing something' doesn't mean it's good or worthwhile.

I think it's brilliant that the IDF made them watch a video of the 7 October massacre.

Why? Do you think it will make any difference? Do you think it's worse than everything we have been seeing for the past 21 months coming out of Gaza?

It’s not just about choosing to focus on one issue—it’s about which issue is chosen and what’s ignored. Highlighting this crisis, while staying silent on other crisises, like the mass killings and famine in Sudan, raises serious questions. This kind of selective activism often aligns with a pattern of disproportionate criticism toward Israel, which can echo antisemitic biases, whether intentional or not. Advocacy should be consistent—otherwise it risks becoming prejudice disguised as principle.

She’s doing more than 99% of the population would ever dare to do. If we all got into little boats and sailed to Palestine, can you imagine how much aid we could get there? They are showing us that we CAN take matters into our own hands. We don’t have to conform and sit back whilst our governments pander to Isreal’s genocidal agenda. They’re setting an example and using their fame to highlight an extremely important cause. All these bs comments about virtue signalling, Oct 7, Hamas…well, whatever helps you sleep at night.

And just a reminder, as we speak, there are innocent people and CHILDREN being crushed under rubble, shot in the head, decapitated, mutilated, limbs blown off, burned alive, starved to death, raped, and worse. So, yes, this needs to end and they need the aid.

No one denies the suffering in Gaza or the urgent need for aid—but emotionally charged rhetoric shouldn’t be used to shut down valid criticism.

Well, that’s what’s actually happening whilst we sit behind our phone screens, in our warm homes, with full bellies and discuss whether or not GT should be allowed to deliver aid to Gaza. That is the actual reality. Sorry if that triggers or upsets anyone but we lose sight of the actual horrors faced by real life people when we debate such things.

But if you want to proceed in your rhetoric:

And just a reminder, as we speak, there are innocent people and CHILDREN in Sudan being massacred, burned alive, starved, raped, mutilated, and displaced by the millions. Entire communities are being wiped out, and famine is looming. So yes, this needs to end—and they desperately also need aid, attention, and action.

Yes, quite right. We should highlight all humanitarian issues globally. Thank you for bringing light to that. But the thread is about Palestine, hence why my original
comment was focused on that.

You see, when we get into these meaningless little debates, we are just taking away from the issue at hand. It’s petty.

Livelovebehappy · 09/06/2025 17:46

It’s all performative and virtue signalling by Greta. The aid on the boat is so tiny it would make hardly any difference at all. Would have been good TV though to see her arrival, and Hamas taking the aid from her to add to their own stock. She probably thinks she would have been greeted and welcomed and lauded by Hamas and the Palestinians. Totally ignoring the fact that Hamas are terrorists who are misogynistic and don’t recognise women as having any relevance other than to bear children.

Did you get your information from an IDF Facebook page or something?
