Greta’s flotilla

What are you thoughts on this? 13 people including Greta Thunberg were travelling to Palestine via boat with supplies. It’s been intercepted by Isreal and diverted.

Whatvare your thoughts? I’m guessing they will simply be deported, maybe with a severe telling off? The UN and the Palestinian foreign ministry have vocalised their support and asked for them to be allowed to continue their journey, however Isreal have said it was nothing more than a vanity exercise and they had very limited supplies on board to actually give aid.

What do you think will happen to the activists on board? Do you think they were right to go? Do you think they genuinely wanted to help or it was more about raising awareness?

I like Greta and I love that she has, so far, used her life to champion causes and she seems like a clever and funny woman. But I wonder if this trio was always doomed and what their long term plan was, especially if they had little aid onboard? But if that was their intention, maybe they just wanted to raise awareness of their feelings on the situation? Should anyone be trying to intervene like this or should it be left to proper channels?

I know feelings are high about this and I want to say I don’t support any of the awful things that have happened and recognise bad things on both sides. I don’t care for Israel’s terrible behaviour or Hamas’ awful doings, I do however care for the innocent people in the middle on both sides. This thread is just to get general thoughts on this…’mission’.

Just to add my thoughts: if this was a genuine aid mission then I respect them putting themselves potentially at risk (due to the boat trip) to care for others but also feel like it’s extremely naive and not actually the right thing to do, there has to be better ways to support?

When the IRA carried out the Warrington bomb, or the one in London or Manchester... if the British Army had flown planes over Ireland and dropped bombs in buildings, let's say for example on my local community centre which would get over 300 people in it to watch wrestling (once saw Giant Haystacks who came to our town), as they suspected an IRA member was among the audience, would that be acceptable?

Israel is carrying out a massacre.

Perhaps I misremember, but I don't recall the IRA rampages into Britain raping women and kidnapping women, children, and old people. I suspect the UK would have reacted differently if the IRA and their supporters had murdered 800 or so people on the borders and taken 100s hostages.

Israel is luring Palestinians towards aid points and then shooting them.

I've seen enough videos on a daily basis to know that it is Isreal who is starving the Palestinians.

And you know what. It's no longer the time to sit and debate about anything anymore. The most fundamental thing is to stop killing. Stop bombing. Stop sending the drones and the bombs.

Just stop.

The suffering we are seeing is unbearable to watch. They are actually living it.

We've heard it all. Paramedics killed, the car Hind was in was shot at over 300 times. She was 6 years old.

Countless innocent men, women and children are still in Israeli jails taken without reason.

All of this has been proven over and over.

Destroying Hamas isn't going to end anything because you can't stop resistance. And the little boy who lost his entire family will resist.

Stop holding hostages and using citizens as human shields?

no?

Does Russia occupy Ukraine? Does Russia control all of Ukraines borders and all access to Ukraine? This is a nonsense comparison.

You do know that Gaza has a border with Egypt as well? Where are the anti Egyptian protesters?

EsmaCannonball · 10/06/2025 07:39

Given that Israel's strategy is to cut off Hamas funding by having the GHF deliver aid directly to Gazan citizens, there would be zero logic to the IDF deliberately murdering civilians at the GHF aid points. There would be logic to Hamas doing it.

Dangermoo · 10/06/2025 07:45

A thread about about an entitled social justice 'warrior' turns into a mini CIME echo chamber. Who would have thought it.

Since May 2024 Israel seized control of the southern Rafah border.

Greta is now on a plane home. Turns out the Israelis are as bad at kidnapping as they are at genocide.

A plane?? Ooft - how will she cope knowing she’s responsible for all those emissions?

Sunnyperiods · 10/06/2025 09:05

A plane?? She won’t be happy about that….

Daily Mail reporting that Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has said that Greta and chums refused to watch the video of the October 7th attacks. The Guardian have not covered this, natch.

Why would she refuse to watch if she's not an anti-Semite? Surely she cares about all suffering, no matter who's doing the suffering?

It's all about the selfies on the selfie yacht. Great nickname, BTW from the Israelis - you know, those who wanted to kidnapp her 🙄

That is Hamas doing this

not the children starving and having to escape bombs day after day

Its inexcusable what the Israeli government are doing (and has been for years) but now more and more countries around the world are saying enough is enough

Are you watching what is happening in Gaza? Maybe Israelis should be forced to see the broken bodies and suffering they are causing?

It's a war. Hamas are well known for using human shields. Should the Allies be held responsible for the death of every civilian that died as a result of eliminating the Nazis?

heavenisaplaceonearth · 10/06/2025 10:29

Hamas are well known but sadly now the IDF are too. Why did you think it would help Greta to understand but are unwilling to go through the same process for yourselves?

They saw broken bodies on 7/10.

How tiresome that you are resorting to whataboutery so quickly. That always completely stifles debate and gets nowhere.

Yes, I'm watching what's happening in Gaza and yes, it's appalling. I condemn it unreservedly. I'm intelligent and compassionate enough to be able to hold more than one thing in mind at once and feel compassion for more than one set of people at once. If only more people could do so.

However, this thread is about Greta and her flotilla - see the title.

So as this thread is about that, what do you think about Greta and pals refusing to watch the video?

I ask as I'm doing you the courtesy of assuming you care about all people, not just one group, and are capable of a level of critical thinking, such that you are able to cope with the nuance of this complex situation.

What are your thoughts on Greta refusing to watch?

heavenisaplaceonearth · 10/06/2025 10:30

IDF don't use human shields. They also don't dress up as journalists and doctors. But they do warn civilians to get out of the way - which tbh is more than the Allies ever did.

We all know what is happening in Gaza; The orchestrated attack made sure of that. The consequences of 7/10 are exactly what Hamas intended. Thunberg is just very lucky she didn't end up in those same hands.

BunfightBetty · 10/06/2025 10:30

Sorry I was responding to @Dangermoo who seems to think seeing Hamas horror is enough and that the IDF slaughter isn’t worthy of the same level of engagement.

My suggestion was entirely that if Greta would be helped to understanding by being forced to see the carnage perhaps Israeli supporters could be held to the same standard?

Thunberg does know the carnage and is doing an Owen Jones on this. It's one of the reasons I find the pair of them repugnant.
