It’s coming up to summer and I already hate the weather. It’s hot, muggy and just ugh.

I hate summer. It’s much easier to warm yourself up than it is to cool yourself off. You can always put more clothes on, but you can’t take more clothes off.

You struggle to sleep cos it’s so hot, and then you’re even more irritable because now not only are you hot and bothered, but you’re tired too.

No I don’t have air con cos I can’t bloody afford it. I have a plug in fan, than yeah works ok in the day but I don’t have it on overnight cos the breeze keeps me awake too.

So happy to read this thread. I am fine at work but my I hate the heat so much and my patience with the dc is much shorter. Feels like we should all be gambolling around outside but we do so little in the summer as I just CANT and then I feel like such a boring parent.

And got a picnic with friends on Friday which is supposed to be a scorcher. Have to argue with them every single time to go somewhere near trees so I can sit in the shade. HOW do people just sit in the middle of the field for hours?!

I really don’t know. It’s sports day for my ds’s school and there are so many parents sitting here cooking. Some look really leathery

meanwhile I’m hiding under my parasol scowling at the sun

I'm thinking of switching jobs to working in the co-op. Just been in and it was freezing cold. Absolute heaven.

Even better when you walk into a supermarket wearing a wet T shirt that you have just pulled out of the washing machine

I got an air con unit for £130, I'm too fat for this nonsense anymore and a fan was just like having a hairdryer blowing on me. Useless.

How much electricity does it use? I'm really tempted but worried about running costs.

MissMarplesNiece · 17/06/2025 16:33

It was a bit better here this morning with a cooling breeze. I don't know what it's like now, I haven't poked my head out of the door to find out, but looking out of the window it looks hot.

Heat - anything above 20 degrees C - exhausts me. Yesterday I went shopping for an hour and even today I feel the effects of being out in the heat.

We currently have a binmen strike and the black bags my neighbours have put outside have been ripped open by birds & cats so there's stinking, festering rubbish all over the pavement plus a multitude of flies that come inside if the windows and doors are open.

I've got insect mesh at the windows. You cut it to size, attach magnets, stick the other magnet on the frame and it couldn't be easier to use. I think it was from JML. It all comes as a kit.

KangaRoo00 · 17/06/2025 21:42

Is it bad that we get home from work and school & proceed to act as we do during the winter, only difference being I open the back door? I’m too hot & tired to be enjoying the sun after a day in the office & DD hates being in the sun.

The trouble is for us is that almost every day, inside and out is like the day you walk into that ridiculous building. Except we have no escape from it because it's inside and out.

You live in the UK - it's really not that hot and not for long - it's hardly boiling hot every day 😅We do have summer here you know, and I love it.

Soubriquet · 18/06/2025 02:36

Im bloody exhausted. Been trying to sleep since 10pm. And I just cant

my skin is so itchy I wish I could peel it all off. My eyes are super dry because I’m so tired

and I have a fan on but it’s still so bloody hot

I was recently at my doctor and she asked me what outdoor exercise I was going to take advantage of the wonderful weather. I couldn’t help but scoff and tell her I would be hiding from the sun for the next few months so I don’t burn to a crisp. Indoor only exercise for me.

I may have mentioned I identify as a vampire. She did y find that funny. My wonderful old doctor understood me, but she retired and my new one just does not get it. How else should I explain that even the smallest amount of heat makes me feel ill and that I can sunburn just stepping outside for a couple of minutes.

‘tis the season of drawn curtains and grumpiness.

Mikart · 18/06/2025 05:43

Forecast 29 degrees here this weekend. I'm going to the Everyman to watch 28 Months Later, and will walk early ( 7 am).
Other than that I shall be wafting round the house .

I loathe the heat. So glad I live in the U.K. where there isn’t any. 😁

There is now!

You’ve got to be fucking joking? This whole thing about the UK never having heat and always rain is a bollocks. Especially in recent years. When it’s hot in the UK which is every summer now, we’re not equipped to deal with it.

How do you have to be "equipped" to deal with it? It really doesn't get that hot in the UK. I have friends in the UK and I can assure you that you have far more rain than we do - winter and summer.

Well, what do you think it means? Our houses have no air con. Worse, they’re built like shit and do not exclude heat or have any kind of shutters or anything to keep the heat out. Our public transport is boiling hot. Again, no air con. It’s not exactly rocket science.

DarkLene · 18/06/2025 06:06

Ps. Having friends in the uk with subjective opinions does not denote factual reality. We have fuck all rain these days.

For the people on this thread it is too hot and too long. That's the point - we couldn't care less about how you like it where you are or that people live in places with higher average temperatures - it's that it is intolerable for us here.

Soubriquet · 18/06/2025 06:45

Oh my eyes…..

they are so sore. Swollen, red, and sticky. I think it’s cos I had the fan on all night. I don’t think it’s conjunctivitis.

I hear you. I find it even more unbearable now the hot flushes have started.
We now have 3 fans scattered around the house. I'm waiting patiently now for autumn to arrive...

I can't remember the last time we had proper rain where I live. There were workmen digging a hole not far from my home yesterday and even 6 feet down the soil is dry as a bone. I don't know what the effects will be on the local wildlife, not so good I think. We've had a couple of showers but they've not even been worthy of an umbrella.

Aprilrainagainagain · 18/06/2025 08:13

I have a big plant tray I got from the garden centre. I’ve filled it up about 20 times this week. Right now sparrows are splashing in and out of it. I’ve had foxes drinking from it and squirrels.
Poor creatures.
