Heat haters unite! (Heat lovers bugger off)

It’s coming up to summer and I already hate the weather. It’s hot, muggy and just ugh.

I hate summer. It’s much easier to warm yourself up than it is to cool yourself off. You can always put more clothes on, but you can’t take more clothes off.

You struggle to sleep cos it’s so hot, and then you’re even more irritable because now not only are you hot and bothered, but you’re tired too.

No I don’t have air con cos I can’t bloody afford it. I have a plug in fan, than yeah works ok in the day but I don’t have it on overnight cos the breeze keeps me awake too.

I'm peri and the heat is HELL. So bloody tired!

Arran2024 · 18/06/2025 10:48

There is a social media food blogger called Kalani - he comes over to the UK from Tenessee and he was filming in London yesterday, where he was astonished by the heat, pretending to get into a drinks fridge in Tescos for some relief etc. He wasnt expecting this and cant believe it - doesn't it always rain?!!

Btw it is forecast to be 33 here on Sat!

Hi, hope it’s okay to join you!

I’ve gone from being a complete sun worshipper all my life to seriously struggling with the summer heat for the past three years. I’m finding it stifling and claustrophobic.

My fan died on me two days ago and I’ve just replaced it with a Honeywell and it’s bliss! Pretty cheap too.

No rain here either for months and my heart sinks when I see the rows of full sun stretching on the weather app.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 18/06/2025 12:06

Can I join too please.

Even though initially I love seeing and feeling the sun in the early spring by this point I'm mostly over it.

August feels easier to me as it means autumn is closer but right now September is a long way away and June/July make me feel untethered.

I think this is what’s worse about this year in particular, it’s like we went from winter directly to summer, I’ve really missed the spring (my favourite season).

Those April showers we used to have would really help now!

You're not wrong. Spring seemed to last about 3 days before summer hit.

I got terribly sunburnt in March this year. A month when I should normally be more at risk from hypothermia.

I'll join in. I don't mind the heat in countries used to it but hate the heat here in the UK! Our homes and society aren't set up for this weather. It's horrible and uncomfortable.

Now if I was in greece or spain with a swimming pool and a house built for it or air con, I'd be loving it😁. A lovely afternoon siesta too please!

"No rain here either for months and my heart sinks when I see the rows of full sun stretching on the weather app."

And the people reading the weather forecast on TV talk about it as though we are all delighted by it and can't wait to get outside and sun bathe. Instead many of us are tired & miserable from lack of sleep, dehydrated and worried about what these temperatures are saying about the state of the climate and what's to come. Guardian reporting today that Met Office saying we have 50/50 chance of 40 degree temps and heatwaves will go on for many months.

The chocolate on my chocolate digestive has melted.

“The chocolate on my chocolate digestive has melted”

Well, that’s an outrage!

The thought of months of this depresses me. It’s too severe. I feel quite desperate for rain and storms,

ForPearlNewt · 18/06/2025 12:57

I love some things about summer - the long, light days and being in the garden, all the trees and flowers and vegetables growing and green.

But I HATE the heat. I've tried and tried to like it but I just cant be doing with it. A bit of sunshine and warmth? Lovely. But anything hotter than about 23 and I can't cope. I can barely move in it, let alone work in the garden or do anything else. I constantly feel uncomfortable and a big sweaty mess. As for actual heatwaves, forget it. I'm useless. I spend my time suffering and longing for hazy September days, Halloween and Bonfire Night.

idrinkandiknowthings · 18/06/2025 13:36

Fortunately, my little office room is very cool, but when I go home I have to ditch the bra and put on a vest top. Looks like this weekend will be hot so it'll be cut-off leggings, a bank of fans and a frozen flannel on my head.

My dad used to say I'd been born under a rock 😅

EasternEcho · 18/06/2025 13:52

I wilt and go into a sort of hibernation in the summer, doing what is only absolutely necessary to survive. I'll come out in September.

OntheBorder1 · 18/06/2025 05:58

How do you have to be "equipped" to deal with it? It really doesn't get that hot in the UK. I have friends in the UK and I can assure you that you have far more rain than we do - winter and summer.

Cool Next time someone starts banging on about climate change i will point them towards this thread cos im sick of the gaslighting

LillyPJ · 18/06/2025 15:15

I hate this heat. At least when it's cold you can wrap up, go to bed, put on extra blankets etc. There's no escape from the heat. And my freezer packed up on Sunday so I've got no ice and no ice cream. I swapped my old car for one with air-conditioning last year. I'm tempted to go out for a long drive but the thought of climbing into that oven on wheels puts me off!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/06/2025 20:36

Ugh. Bus stop was closed, Uber was showing a 400% uplift and no cars available in any case (yes, I had decided to suck it up for the sake of getting home) so I had to walk ten minutes and wait another ten for a bus to show up, trying to duck into a tiny patch of shade to hide like an anxious vampire.

I wear sunblock every day. I wear clothes that cover the maximum amount of my body as possible. I wear prescription sunglasses.

My forehead, cheeks, chin, neck, ears and scalp are burned. It started stinging within twenty minutes of getting home.

This is going to be fun at work tomorrow.

MissMarplesNiece · 18/06/2025 20:54

@NeverDropYourMooncup That sounds so uncomfortable.

Weather forecaster on TV tonight described the weather as balmy. 🙄 Balmy is soothing & pleasant. This heat is just bloody horrible.

Balmy was ten to seven this morning in the shade of mature trees. Detestable was the weather at the bus stop.

I hate it, it depresses me. Really affects my mood. Then you are made feel like a weirdo for something you cannot help feeling. People get VERY tetchy when you mention you hate the Summer :)

They do don't they. They get tetchy when you tell them you love winter too! If I tell people I love January and February (I really do. Non-pressured hibernation) they act like I've defected from their club or something! I've not followed the script...

And why should it matter to them? The weather will do what it wants to do, it’s not like we can influence it! It’s such a strange attitude.

monkeybag123 · 18/06/2025 21:48

I bloody hate it , I check the weather constantly and feel massive relief when it's cloudy and wet ! When I get to September. I feel I've managed to get through another summer and now I can be happy again . Its suffocating and its like being in prison

OntheBorder1 · 18/06/2025 21:49

DarkLene · 18/06/2025 06:04

Well, what do you think it means? Our houses have no air con. Worse, they’re built like shit and do not exclude heat or have any kind of shutters or anything to keep the heat out. Our public transport is boiling hot. Again, no air con. It’s not exactly rocket science.

Air con is a fairly recent thing here and many people don't have it, and we certainly didn't grow up with it. Nor do we have shutters and most of us don't have houses built for hot weather. Your point is?

OntheBorder1 · 18/06/2025 21:53

DarkLene · 18/06/2025 06:06

Ps. Having friends in the uk with subjective opinions does not denote factual reality. We have fuck all rain these days.

One of my friends emails me every second day, so she tells me when they have rain. It's not a "subjective opinion". Why are there so many posts on MN about rainy weather if you have fuck all rain these days? Farmers here rely heavily on irrigation in summer - do they in the UK? I've never seen a photo of the (green) UK countryside with giant irrigators.

Overtheatlantic · 18/06/2025 21:53

Put some water out for the birds and bees. They’ve got very little to drink these days.
