Heat haters unite! (Heat lovers bugger off)

It’s coming up to summer and I already hate the weather. It’s hot, muggy and just ugh.

I hate summer. It’s much easier to warm yourself up than it is to cool yourself off. You can always put more clothes on, but you can’t take more clothes off.

You struggle to sleep cos it’s so hot, and then you’re even more irritable because now not only are you hot and bothered, but you’re tired too.

No I don’t have air con cos I can’t bloody afford it. I have a plug in fan, than yeah works ok in the day but I don’t have it on overnight cos the breeze keeps me awake too.

I loathe the heat. So glad I live in the U.K. where there isn’t any. 😁

Beautifulweeds · 01/06/2025 19:22

I'm definitely a cooler weather person, getting hot and the sun blinding me makes me feel irritated!

I wasn't always this way, post 50 I am. I work in schools and the classrooms get so hot (and smell) and lucky if the windows open more than a crack or have blinds. I always take a little fan lol 😆

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 01/06/2025 19:22

I hate the heat but love the long hours of daylight, I really don't like the nights drawing in.

LowDownBoyStandUpGuy · 01/06/2025 19:23

I am in Scotland so thankfully we don’t get much heat but the last few weeks have been very warm and I havehated it. Now it’s wet and grey and I’m happy! I am another who gets panicked in very hot weather, the heatwave a few years ago was awful I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

I have a count down to Halloween going, best time of the year by far, leaves on the ground, dark nights, cold weather. Love it. I also spend far too much time watching autumnal themed short videos on TikTok as a type of get through the summer therapy!

Fragmentedbrain · 01/06/2025 19:25

High of fourteen where I am this week - you guys should move!

WoodlandLove · 01/06/2025 19:30

Autumn/winter lover here! I was fantasising about November earlier! 🤭🌰🍄🍁🍂🦔
It's actually not too hot here (the Sussex coast) at the moment thankfully. Ironically it was far hotter several weeks ago, when it was definitely still spring meteorologically speaking. I'm hoping it doesn't get hotter again now for a while. It's muggy though, boo!
In a few months I'll be back in my cosy clothes snuggled with a book and a hot chocolate! Hang on in there folks!

Where are you?
In particular in cities and older buildings, the inside can be double the outside temp!

I lived in a London flat for many years. In the day, the outside bricks would heat up and in the evening, you could feel the heat permeating inside- even when dark. It was cooler to sit in a park than inside!

AutumnLover1989 · 01/06/2025 19:35

Me!! HATE the heat. Can't sleep, constantly sweating, fair skin and meds make me sun sensitive. Roll on September.

Our bedroom is in the loft and is hotter than the sun in the summer!

I bought a tower fan/cooling unit for £70 from b&q yesterday and it was bliss last night. Not as powerful as AC but was better than a traditional fan.

Out of interest could you share a link? I have a loft home office and it’s hell in the summer afternoons!

zebrazoop · 01/06/2025 19:37

How expensive is it to run AC?

CiaoMeow · 01/06/2025 19:47

I thought it was just the heat I hated, but I've realised it's more than that.
It's the inescapable brightness of it all. And it starts so early in the day!
And it's also the noisiness. And the greater number of people.
There's just more noise and activity in general outside.
And bloody files coming into the kitchen.

Autumn and Winter - come quickly, my lovelies.😅

Ketzele · 01/06/2025 19:48

This is my tribe. I have always hated the heat, even when I was young and skinny. Sign me up.

spoonbillstretford · 01/06/2025 19:48

It's not even hot. At least actually wait until it's warm until you start moaning.

Nope!!! I can moan now if I want to. Feel free to go to another thread. It reached a minimum of 20 today and with the humidity it was enough

Yes it bloody well is.
Roll on Autumn 🍂 🍁 🍂 🍁
Can’t wait.

Aprilrainagainagain · 01/06/2025 19:54

I hate the heat. Luckily where I work has really good air con.
I’m going to invest in an air con unit this year.

I'm looking across at the thermostat now. 26 Celsius in here, hard flooring (which does help, by the way) and it's cooler now than it has been for several days.

That's what the storage heater/heat sink effect of urban living does.

Middlemarch123 · 01/06/2025 20:20

Fibromyalgia means regulating my body temperature is very tricky. Too cold in the winter, so thermals and heated throw are my friends. For the last week have been struggling with the heat, but recently got a Silentnight Restore cooling blanket and pillow pads, both from Tesco. Very effective. Not expensive either.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 01/06/2025 20:36

Heat absolutely wipes me out, partly due to chronic illness and partly due to peri. I also get panicky and anxious when it’s too hot. It used to genuinely get me down and depressed.

I’m very lucky, I realise, but we had a fixed air con unit installed in the living room last year and it has been an absolute life saver. We had it put in the living room as it means it’s a place we can all be if needed, and also, I sleep downstairs (on our reclining sofas) at times when it’s too hot.

I grew up abroad where its drummed into you to stay in the shade/indoors in the middle of the day, use sunscreen, a hat etc. It always amazes me that so many British go abroad and lie on a sun bed all day. I could think of nothing worse.

I'm now peri and find the heat is affecting me much more. I posted recently about all summer clothes being made of polyester! Yuck! If I wanted to sweat even more, I'd sit in a sauna!

We've recently moved and have bifolds we can open. Our previous property was a London flat and it was a tinder box. We did have a portable air con there which we used more than heating! It was huge, heavy and noisy though and looked like a dalek.

I was in Sainsburys yesterday and spotted this nice red summer dress. As i got closer and touched it the material was almost as thick as a jumper. What IS this thick material all about. No way i could wear that

JenniferBooth · 01/06/2025 20:50

Im in a one bedroom social housing flat Built in the 1970s. Its unbearable Our fridge freezer cannot cope with it and often stops working in the summer. Its fine in the winter. A PP said open the windows The HA put window restrictors on them so they dont open wide enough Only a couple of inches. The old windows were the slidey up ones Could get a breeze then.
Brits are expected to live in sweat boxes and then when we dare to mention air conditioning are told no cos the environment.

Could you install a velux window? We have remote ones in our ceiling and if it rains, they automatically close. They help to make a chimney effect and suck the hot air out.

Soubriquet · 01/06/2025 17:48

I’ve got my eye on this one

Doesn’t require a pipe for the window which is what caught my eye. Can add water to make it better but will work ok with out it and is supposed to be quiet

Really don't work and definitely no better than a good fan (Meaco).

Soubriquet · 01/06/2025 21:18

Oh….darn

Well, guess I’m also now looking for a good recommendation for a cheap but effective air con

It’s the bastard humidity that gets me. I went for a walk on the south coast yesterday, it was overcast and foggy the whole way but I was sweating like anything because there was no breeze. It was like being in a steam room.
