It’s coming up to summer and I already hate the weather. It’s hot, muggy and just ugh.

I hate summer. It’s much easier to warm yourself up than it is to cool yourself off. You can always put more clothes on, but you can’t take more clothes off.

You struggle to sleep cos it’s so hot, and then you’re even more irritable because now not only are you hot and bothered, but you’re tired too.

No I don’t have air con cos I can’t bloody afford it. I have a plug in fan, than yeah works ok in the day but I don’t have it on overnight cos the breeze keeps me awake too.

Max temp of 16° in Cheshire this week 🙌. Still a bit too warm for me but definitely do-able.

It's not even hot. At least actually wait until it's warm until you start moaning.

Title not obvious enough for you sweetie?

JohnTheRevelator · 01/06/2025 21:49

I have found my people. I really can't think of anything positive to say about summer. The minute it hits 22 degrees,I'm done. Just the thought of a heatwave makes me feel ill. Travelling on public transport is a nightmare, the buses are like ovens, and people STILL insist on slamming the windows shut. It seems to bring out the worst in a good percentage of the population as so many people start to behave like arseholes, having their car stereos thumping at full volume, having stinking barbecues and just generally being objectionable. I get utterly fucked off with people keep raving about the heat. I mean, seriously, what is so wonderful about it? OK,it's nice not to be freezing cold and shivering, but just because 19 degrees is pleasant, why does it mean that 29 degrees is even better? And I get funny looks when I say no, actually I'm NOT enjoying this 'lovely' weather. I always used to think it was because I was fat that I couldn't handle the heat, but since losing 7 and a half stone,it's no easier! I think I just come from a family of heat haters. My Ddad hated hot weather and he was as slim as a rake, ditto my older brothers. And don't get me started on it getting light at 4am......

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 01/06/2025 22:27

I hate the heat too. Right now I have got a horrid summer cold that makes me want to sleep when I m not burning with fever and all afternoon I ve had to endure neighbours outside screaming and laughing and generally being awful.

The daylight isn't helping. I long for cold and dark and quiet and plenty of sleep.

We have fans but I find them too noisy at night and the cats don't like them

My ideal place would be the classrooms at work with air con (sadly only 2 out of 13 in my block).

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 01/06/2025 22:47

My ideal would be the short hours of darkness that we get now combined with about 20°c, rain overnight and sunny/breezy during the day. I love, love, love the light evenings and mornings, it's so nice sitting out in the evenings and waking up in broad daylight.

notsureonthisone · 01/06/2025 22:51

I love nothing better than sitting out in my garden, under an umbrella, in the rain. Hate heat, so glad that I live in Scotland. I melt when I visit family in London in the summer. Our recent spell of unrelenting heat had me trapped in my cool house for weeks as it was too hot to sit outside.
I have a bedside fan but also bought 'cooling' bed linen today and I use a cooling blanket as well.

TIP: Freeze a bottle of water and place it just above your head on your pillow. It's the opposite of a hot water bottle and keeps my head cool.

chocolatelover91 · 01/06/2025 22:59

I could have written this myself! Bloody hate it! You are definitely not alone, OP!

Soubriquet · 03/06/2025 10:41

It’s overcast and breezy here today! Fabulous!!

I thought it was just the heat I hated, but I've realised it's more than that.
It's the inescapable brightness of it all. And it starts so early in the day!
And it's also the noisiness. And the greater number of people.
There's just more noise and activity in general outside.
And bloody files coming into the kitchen.

Autumn and Winter - come quickly, my lovelies.😅

Yes. You've voiced my thoughts exactly.

Im in the south east which of course nearly always gets hotter than the rest of the country. Pisses me off when MNers say “ heat, what heat?’ and act like we’re lying, when they simply live in cooler regions

Judiezones · 03/06/2025 13:44

OP I agree. I hate it when I go out with friends and they say Let's sit in the sun!
I like cool weather, sunny and cold autumn days are my favourite.
The thought of lying greased up on a sunbed in the strong sunshine, somewhere like Turkey or Egypt, is my idea of hell. I'd rather be in the arctic.

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 03/06/2025 13:46

It's not even hot! I'm in London and it's bloody freezing - popped out of the office for lunch and wished I'd brought my coat.

It's hot for maybe two months max each year if we're lucky, with four or five months of decent light. All of you who like cold and grey and early darkness get more than your fair share.

Abracadabra12345 · 03/06/2025 13:54

Soubriquet · 01/06/2025 17:48

I’ve got my eye on this one

Doesn’t require a pipe for the window which is what caught my eye. Can add water to make it better but will work ok with out it and is supposed to be quiet

Let me know if you do get it as it could be a big help, not needing a window

ThanksForTheSong · 03/06/2025 13:56

We bought air con units a couple of years ago and they’re the best money we’ve ever spent, Meaco ones from John Lewis.

Abracadabra12345 · 03/06/2025 13:56

Foolsgold74 · 01/06/2025 21:17

Really don't work and definitely no better than a good fan (Meaco).

Ah, just seen this. Shame!

I’ve got a Meaco one in my basket and it was the best one according to an article which tested AC units.

Reports point to a hot summer from mid- June into July at least for those of us who live in the SE

You've picked the first slightly cooler day to comment upon. 18C with the occasional spot of dampness in the air. It's comfortable wearing a long-sleeved dress today, no coats necessary. Even our no blood in their veins staff are wearing light cardigans outside without complaint - and they bring in portable heaters to make their south-facing office like a butterfly house in winter.

Soubriquet · 14/06/2025 11:21

Ugh!! It’s so bloody muggy today. It’s horrible. I feel damp!

It was far too hot for me yesterday where I am. Then we had rain in the evening, bliss! They said we'd have a full-on thunderstorm which I was looking forward to, but we just had a bit of lightning and rain.
It's actually much easier today - cooler, windy and not as close. So, I hope it cools down for you soon too 🌧️🌩️
Only 3 months or so till autumn! Only 6 months or so till winter! I'm just not designed for summer - dreaming of long winter walks in thick jumpers and tights, followed by a hot bath and cinnamon candles with a big mug of hot chocolate ☕The end of summer social pressure, and a time for socially acceptable hibernation! Can't wait 😊

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 14/06/2025 13:32

Revoltingly humid here too, yesterday and today, we only had a few drops of rain. It's only 20° which should be fine but it feels much hotter.

I am conflicted, I love the long hours of daylight and being outdoors in shorts and a tee shirt, hate the whole dark/cosy/hot chocolate scenario, I would just like fresh, breezy dry, light days with the temp around 20 and low humidity. Plus rain overnight for the allotment.

MyKingdomForACat · 14/06/2025 13:55

Absolutely loathe it. An estate in South London is an unpleasant place on a very warm evening trust me. Hurry up 21 June and the nights drawing in. Bring on September, Halloween and Christmas.

Abracadabra12345 · 14/06/2025 14:20

I used my new Meaco AC unit for the first time yesterday during the relentless hot, muggy day ( 29 “feels like 32 due to humidity”). I was hoping for an ice cold room but although it brought the temperature down, it still wasn’t cool. You get heat gain from the duct itself. However, all the heat is in the attic bedroom where we most need AC, because of heat rising, and from the roof itself. (one day it will be a viable proposition to paint our roofs). At least it could be used thanks to the unit.

I invested in a couple of cooling blankets which a pp had mentioned and they definitely helped so thank you for that.

Yesterday and last night was unbearable, and it was still muggy this morning but thankfully it has turned into a much nicer, fresher afternoon

Maddy70 · 14/06/2025 14:27

Definitely get an Aircon machine. Life changing

Anzena · 14/06/2025 14:36

Like others I really am not good in humid steamy heat at all. Don't mind dry heat but nothing above 25degrees or I'm done.

Wondering if any of you cool people go abroad in Summer or not?

I do my travelling in December (Christmas/NY in Southern Spain) and city breaks in Jan/Feb or October. I never venture abroad in Summer but I have the choice not to these days!

The entire house, structure and furnishings, has absorbed heat that will be releasing slowly (or increasing without cooler weather) - that means that it'll take 2-3 days for the room to be that much cooler, compared to just switching it on occasionally to cool the air.
