Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

I drive that road every day and as you stated, you were on the 70mph dual carriageway section, so I know exactly where the fixed speed camera is located. Not excusing the speeding, but I can absolutely believe it would have been clear at that time of day, an hour later and it becomes a car park. Regardless of what posters think about it, factually you’re only 1mph over what NYP would offer a speed awareness course for, so just respond to the NIP and you’ll get 3 points and £100 fine and of course it will likely impact your future insurance premium as you have to declare it until it’s spent on your licence. They’ll only take you to court if you don’t respond or dispute it. Suggestions that you need a solicitor are ridiculous.

I didn't think the A64 had any fixed speed cameras. I didn't think North Yorkshire had any fixed speed cameras.

MrsMappFlint · 01/06/2025 00:05

The A64 is 60 in some places and 70 in others so, depending where the OP was-she may very well have been over the limit by 27 miles.

She responded to a pp-who expressed a wish that she may lose her licence-by calling her remark unnecessary. To other posters who express disapproval, she calls them horrible as do other posters who agree with her. She also hopes that she doen't lose her licence as she lives rurally and won't be able to drive her kids to school.

Well, for the sake of my kids who also travel rurally to school, I sincerely hope she does lose her licence-she is a reckless driver and when these reckless drivers kill someone, they nearly always declare that speeding isn't their normal behaviour.

Speeding idiots kill people-the OP thought that making her holiday was more important than risking the lives of other road users and, by the way, 6.30 is not particularly quiet on the A64.

This time, she was lucky she didn't kill anyone but is she reflecting on that? No, of course not! She is merely hoping that she won't lose her licence and suffer inconvenience.

So, yes OP for the sake of my child, the child of every mumsnetter and indeed your own, I sincerely hope that you do lose your licence and that you give thanks that it is only your poxy licence that will be lost as a result of your action and not the loss of a life.

If you think I'm being horrible...well, little do I care.

You will get a few points and a fine is all.

Stop worrying about it, it's over, you know you were stupid driving so fast and won't do it again.

We all make mistakes.

Grammarnut · 31/05/2025 23:02

It doesn't matter that no-one is around and that no-one is in immediate danger. You broke the law. The limit is 70 for a reason. Why did you need to do 86 up a hill?

I wasn't doing 86 up the hill inwas doing 70, but funnily enough you need to increase the power to get up a hill without losing speed...then when the hill eases off and flattens if you don't see off fast enough the car speeds up Iver the 70mph you started at...its not hard to understand.

I am aware I broke the law.i took the points and paid the fine.

But the op asked what was likely to happen...I answered her question based on my experience.

Oh well, that's perfectly fine then-17 miles over the speed limit is absolutely nothing...very responsible driving.

I anticipated that response from you.

Impossible for you to admit you hadn’t done due diligence with the thread.

I was merely pointing out facts.

Why was there a need to swear?

MrsMappFlint · 01/06/2025 00:13

In fact if she had her children in the car, there's a chance the social services might get involved-something else for her to ponder on.

I will fuck at whoever I like! You do know you're not in AIBU? OP asked a simple question, your outrage and dramatics is irrelevant and wrong. There's no way this is a licence-losing offence, absolutely not.

Well said. I have little time for anyone who speeds. They know what they're doing.

I've never read such moronic judginess on here in such volume, ever.

Answer the op, ffs.

The op knows she did wrong, she's.never done it before.

Any driver commenting has been on roads with a 70mph speed limit before knows that many drivers regularly drive above this.

It is obviously very wrong. Op know this. She has expressed regret and will accept the penalty, which most likely will be 3 penalty points and a fine.

She doesn't need constant berating. What sad little lives some of you lead to keep coming on and saying awful things to op.

She knows it was wrong. Give it a rest.

Moveoverdarlin · 01/06/2025 00:20

It’ll be 3 points and a fine. At worst 6 points. Don’t stress.

Always remember, when you point a finger there’s always three pointing back at you. Have a cup of tea,

76evie · 01/06/2025 00:24

Wow the judgement on here, ignore them OP. You made a mistake and seem pretty remorseful, you will more than likely get 3 points and a fine, you were going too fast to get offered a course unfortunately. North Yorkshire police love their mobile cameras especially on the A64, they can be pretty rubbish are investigating other crimes but loves catching a speeder!

The letter says it was a 70 limit.

It was the A64 in Yorkshire. We live in Surrey.

Do you need to be so horrible? I already feel absolutely terrible and I never usually speed

OP come on. Except you did speed A LOT. And you started your post by trying to excuse what you did about the road being empty and you wanting to be home.

MNdrama · 01/06/2025 00:29

Lolabear38 · 31/05/2025 21:52

@Speeding87stupid you made a mistake and you’ve owned it and it certainly sounds like you’ve learned from it. I think the biggest mistake you’ve made in this situation is posting about it on MN - you clearly forgot everyone on here is perfect and has never made any mistakes or errors of judgement in their lives so sadly they can’t relate in this situation and can only cast judgement from their pedestals of righteousness.

Thankfully, nothing bad happened and I’m sure you’ll be a lot more careful in future. Fingers crossed it’s just a fine and some points and we can all move on x

Lmao. When your children / loved ones are killed by a speeding driver, I'm sure you'll be saying this same thing. Definitely

You do realize people in Germany and France regularly drive at 80+ mph and they haven't all killed themselves.

Driving a bit too fast on an empty road isn't particularly dangerous
